Newsflash [email protected] 308-345-5400 www.highplainsradio.net BUFFALO COMMONS KICKS OFF TODAY The annual Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival kicks off to- day .Festival 2017 will celebrate McCook’s 135th birthday and Ne- braska’s 150th with acclaimed storytellers, poets, historians, musicians, a stage show, a dinner cabaret, stories and theater for the young, “History’s Mysteries” bus tour, a storytelling workshop, a free show at the High Plains Museum and a chance to listen and tell community stories, a poetry slam, a “meet and greet” with “Sen. George Norris and his wife Ellie.” The arts and humanities have always been central to South- west Nebraska and McCook’s development as the “Capital of the Buf- falo Commons” from the early homesteaders through today. The joys, the hardships and the characters we’ve encountered here on the mixed grass prairie are reflected in our art, in our music, and in the stories we pass along. The festival strives to provide experience-based learning by combining super venues, outstanding artists, and enthusiastic hosts to in- vite audiences of all ages and ethnic backgrounds into a celebration of rural community. The artists not only entertain, they model, teach, and inspire. PROPERTY TAX REDUCTION MEASURE A Nebraska lawmaker who wants to put a property tax reduction meas- ure on the 2018 ballot has started meeting with farm groups to help finance a possible petition drive. Sen. Steve Erdman of Bayard said Thursday that he believes he can generate enough support to move for- ward, based on his conversations with those groups. Edman said one farm organization told him it could raise $250,000 within a week to start the process. A statewide petition drive is likely to cost at least $1 million. "I'm very confident we'll get this on the ballot, one way or an- other," he said. "I don't believe (fundraising) is going to be a problem." Erdman announced last month that he will introduce a constitutional amendment to lower property taxes during next year's legislative ses- sion. Erdman said some urban senators recently expressed interest in addressing property taxes because residential values have spiked. But he warned that if lawmakers don't act, he plans to launch a petition drive to place the issue on the 2018 general election ballot. DEFENSE OF THE KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE After a parade of his neighbors and a sister-in-law criticized the pro- posed Keystone XL pipeline as unneeded and environmentally risky, James Crumly rose at a public meeting Wednesday to defend it. The Page, Nebraska, area landowner said that he has invested in ethanol plants, leased land for wind turbines and supports shipping crude oil from Canada across his property as part of his desire to free the U.S. from reliance on the Middle East or other faraway countries for fuel. “The people of Holt County, the people of Nebraska and the people of the United States of America will benefit from energy independence,” Crumly said. But many more people rejected Crumly’s hopes, saying that the current worldwide glut of oil has made the U.S. an exporter of oil, leaving no need for shipping expensive tar sands in a 36-inch pipe across Nebraska to refineries on the American Gulf Coast. The country would be wiser to shift to other, renewable forms of energy, many op- ponents said. “This is a 20th century solution to a 21st century problem,” said Jeanne Crumly of Page, James Crumly’s sister-in-law. And so it went during almost seven hours of testimony at the second public comment meeting conducted by the Nebraska Public Service Commission. SPORTS Another piece of Nebraska's 2017-18 schedule was unveiled Thurs-day, as ESPN announced that Nebraska will host Boston College in the 2017 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The first-ever meeting between the Huskers and Eagles will take place at Pinnacle Bank Arena during the week of Nov. 27. Date, start time and television infor-mation will be announced at a later date, but all of the Challenge games are on the ESPN family of networks. Boston College went 9-23 last year, but returns its top two scorers in guards Jerome Robinson (18.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.9 apg) and Ky Bowman (14.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg). Jim Christian is in his fourth season at Boston College and former Husker assistant coach Scott Spinelli is one of the assistant coaches for the Eagles. The Huskers, under the direction of sixth-year Head Coach Tim Miles, welcome back nine letter winners, including four players who started at least nine games last sea-son. Nebraska junior Cody Walton finished seventh in the decathlon to lead the Nebraska track and field team on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field. Walton became Ne-braska's first athlete to earn first-team All-America honors, while four others picked up second-team honors on day two of the meet. Walton, a Forest Lake, Minnesota native, scored 7,813 points to earn first-team All-America honors in the event for the first time in his career. Walton's point total was the best ever by a Husker decathlete at the NCAA Championships. The school-record holder in the event with a total of 7,937 earlier this season, Walton finished second in the javelin part of the competition with a mark of 207-6 (63.24m). He posted top-eight finishes in the first four events of the day, including 110-meter hurdles (eighth), discus (sixth) and pole vault (seventh).
