Students may work individually or in groups to devise their own project about the theme People and Consequences. This theme offers students the opportunity to explore the role of individuals or groups in history. This exploration can be approached at a number of levels such as: 

How the life of a significant person has been linked to significant events in history. 

How famous individuals have been represented in history. 

How we judge the achievements of ‘great’ people. 

To what extent historical events are influenced by individuals. 

Competition  entries  can  be  in  the  form  of  an essay,  a  3D‐model,  a  film,  a  performance  or website.  

Entries  for  the  Challenge  close  August  31st  and will be judged by a panel of local history teachers for progression to state and then national panels. National winners will be notified by mail  in  late October.  

This is an extra‐curricular activity, so students will not  be  given  time  to  work  on  their  projects during class, however after school workshops at Irymple  Secondary  College  will  be  held  in  the library  on Wednesday  afternoons  until  4:45pm. Students  will  also  need  to  spend  some  time completing their entries at home. The workshops will be run by Mr Gibbons, Mrs Robertson & Mrs McClure.  The  sessions  are  not  compulsory,  but they will allow students to have access to a range of  print  and  non‐print  resources.  More importantly, attending these sessions will enable students  to  assist  each  other  and  be  provided with  feedback  and  assistance  relating  to  the development of their projects.

State Volleyball Trip 

On  the  17th  of  May  our  Intermediate  Volleyball Team  piled  into  the mini  bus  and  headed  off  to Melbourne  to  contest  the  State  Volleyball Championship.  After  a  seven  hour  journey  we dined out at the food court at Highpoint Shopping Centre  before  bedding  down  in  our  comfortable cabins in the well manicured suburb of Braybrook. After a restful night the boys were on the road by 8 o’clock and Mr Dalziel had the I Phone running hot whilst  trying  to  find  the  fastest  route  to  MSAC (Melbourne  Sports  and  Aquatic  Centre).The  first game  we  played  was  against  Grovedale  and  we won  in  three  sets;  20‐10,  19‐21  and  15‐4  and proved  that  disciplined  teamwork  beats  patchy flashes  of  brilliance  every  day  of  the  week.  The second  game  was  against  a  very  professionally drilled team from Maribyrnong and we went down in  two  sets;  20‐13  and  20‐13.  Maribyrnong’s distinct  height  advantage  was  too much  for  our boys who were  very  competitive  throughout  the match. Our final match was against Kew Secondary College and as any chance of making the finals had dissipated  after  losing  the  first  set  20‐13  it  was time  to  let  the bench put on a  show and  to  their credit  only  went  down  20‐11  in  a  well  fought contest. I must commend our students on the way they  behaved  both  on  and  off  the  court  for  the whole  time  we  were  away.

The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal 

On Friday 25th May the school will be raising funds for the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. Students are  invited  to  come  in  casual  clothes  (footy colours) with  a  gold  coin  donation  for  our  Footy Colours  Day.  Popcorn  will  be  sold  for  $1.50  and Fairy  Floss  for  $2  at  lunch  time.  A Teacher vs. Student football game will also be on during lunch. 

No singlet tops or thongs allowed on the day. 

 

Yr 10 Work Experience ‐ time running out?   Many  students  have  got  their  2  weeks  of  work experience fully organised which is fantastic. Generally  students  get  the  positions  they want  if they get organised early. However,  there are a  lot of students who  'say' that they are organised, but have not yet brought back to Susanne (in the front office) the employer's signed official documents ?    These must  be  returned  for  legal  and  insurance purposes.  The  forms also  must  be  signed  by  a parent. Susanne then gets the Principal to sign off and  then  she  can organise a  'pack',  ready  for  the work placement. Students  must  also  complete  two  Worksafe modules before  they  go on placement. A  general module  and  an  industry  specific  module.  These have  mostly  been  completed  in  STEPS  but  a certificate  of  completion  must  be  given  to  your STEPS teacher for proof.   Don't  leave  finding  a  placement  to  the  last minute!  All  the above usually  takes at  least 1  ‐ 2 weeks  to  complete.  Do  not expect  staff  and employers  to  bend  over  backwards  in  the  last 

week of school because you are in a panic from not being organised !    STEPS teachers, Susanne (front office) and Mrs Horkings can help you NOW, so ask if you need assistance.

Outward Bound 2012 

On  the  26th  of  May,  20  Year  9  students  and  2 teachers  headed  off  to  Canberra  to  attend  this year’s Outward Bound  program.    This  program  is all about students learning more about themselves and  how  they  get  along with  other  students  and people.    It’s  amazing  how  some  students  change the way they behave in the bush in comparison to a school. 

Outward  Bound  is  a  journey  of  7  days  in  the Wilderness of Namadgi National Park just south of Canberra.   During  these days  students undergo  a variety of activities including Abseiling, High Ropes course, an  introduction to caving at a place called Lego  Land,  and  several  days  of  walking  and navigation through the bush.

Each night students are responsible for the cooking of  food.    This  year’s  highlight  was  a  new  meal which  was  famously  named  as  “Mush  and veggies”.    It was probably  the worst meal anyone had  tasted  but  everybody  was  that  hungry  that most sucked  it up and ate  it, although one of  the teachers found a very nice apple and orange to eat that evening  throwing  the “Mush”  into  the chook bucket.    Other  than  that  night,  the  rest  of  the meals were very creative and rather yummy.   

We  walked  through  various  weather  conditions, one morning waking up  to a  temperature around minus  4,  with  our  bivvies  frozen  solid  with  ice! Even  some  students  who  hadn’t  quite  got  their gear right found themselves with frozen boots and sleeping bags. 

Overall  the  trip was  an  enjoyable  experience  and thanks should go to Mr Penna and Mrs Douglas for their efforts in getting us there and back safely.

SRC update 

Thanks  to  all  staff,  students,  family  and  friends that  helped  SRC  raise  money  for  our  sponsor child, Lustiani, by buying Freddo frogs. We raised $320  in a very short amount of  time. Stay  tuned for more  fundraising  events!  Also  well  done  to the  college  captains  who  did  a  great  job  at running  the  ISC  Anzac  service  and  also  for representing our school at the local Irymple Anzac parade.   

Interhouse  Cross  Country  – Held Wednesday  9th May.  

With over 400 students participating in  the  event  the  day  was  a  huge success,  with  everyone  having  a great day.  The weather was fine and sunny which made  the day an  ideal 

one  for running.   The nice weather and effort put in by runners might also explain part of the reason why  Gibbo’s  snags  were  so  popular  at  the  end. Many  students  took  the  opportunity  to  run  their best  times while others  chose  to  jog and/or walk the  course at  their  leisure.   Some excellent  times were  recorded  with  age  group  champions  and placegetters on the day being:

2012 Alpine Community Learning Project‐ Launch Day 

On  Friday  20th April,  the Alpine  Leadership  team; consisting  of  Jarrod  Lay,  Olivia  Ganz,  Tyler 

Trevaskis,  Allie Deacon,  Jayden Fitzgerald  and Erica  Musgrove; conducted  their 

Community Learning Project  (CLP) which they had been working on since attending Gnurad‐ Gundidj campus in term 4 of 2011. The team’s aim for their CLP  was  to  demonstrate  the  value  of  having  an education and the opportunity that their peers are given whilst at  school. Their belief was  that  there were many students not making the most of their time at  school and viewing  school as a hindrance rather than an opportunity.  

To pass their message on, the team held a  launch day  in which guest  speakers  spoke  to all  the Year 8’s and 9’s at the Irymple Leisure Centre. The guest speakers  included  Eric  Oguzkaya  (Chemist Warehouse  Manager),  Shane  Dickeson  (Double 

lung  transplant recipient)  and Lesley Cordoma (Mallee  Family Care). 

Eric  spoke  to the  audience about  the 

opportunities that an education provided him and that  with  hard  work,  perseverance  and  accurate goal  setting  you  can  realise  your  dreams  and  be successful  in any field you wish. Shane then spoke of  his  inspirational  story  of  living  with  Cystic Fibrosis  and  becoming  a  double  lung  transplant recipient.  The  daily  challenges  he  faced  to  get himself  back  to  full  health  put  life  in  perspective for  the  students  and  made  them  realise  how precious  life is. Lesley was the final speaker for the event and  conveyed a message of  support  to  the students  on  behalf  of  Mallee  Family  Care  and Chances for Children.

The  Alpine  Team is  to  be congratulated  on their  efforts  in conducting a very professional  and 

successful  presentation  to  their  peers.  The  team will continue to enforce the message of ‘Education Inspiration’  by  placing  posters  around  the  school with  inspiring  quotes  and  information  reminding students of the opportunity they have throughout their  schooling.  Currently  ISC  is  applying  to  send two teams to two campuses in 2013 ‐ more info to follow.
