BeginningsDear Members of Congregation Emanu El,

It is an honor for me to joinyou this year.

Congregation Emanu El isan outstanding synagogue. The history of the temple isinspiring. I admire the valuesof the temple: community, dedication to social justice, and commitment to Jewishlife. I am looking forward toworking with synagogue staffRabbi Cohn, Cantor

Bern-Vogel, Judy Filsinger, Jerry Ripley, andJillian Snyder

This is a time of transition at CongregationEmanu El. I met with many congregants duringmy visits. I am looking forward to working witheach member of the synagogue to learn aboutyour ideals and begin to bring to life thecongregation’s vision for the future.

I bring to Congregation Emanu El insightsfrom working as an interim rabbi withcongregations in Nebraska, Texas, NorthCarolina, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maryland,New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Connecticut, and Wisconsin and experience as a rabbi foreighteen years at North Shore Synagogue, inSyosset, New York. The interim rabbi helps acongregation in three main areas.

The Interim as Synagogue Rabbi. First andforemost, I will serve as your rabbi. I amavailable to provide pastoral care, will leadservices, teach classes for adults and School forJewish Living students, and help represent thesynagogue in the community.

I appreciate the challenge of working with anunfamiliar rabbi for Bar and Bat Mitzvah, weddings, times of illness, and funerals. I willwork with you to make each life cycle eventpersonal and meaningful. \On a personal level,my family belongs to the synagogue where Igrew-up, in Washington, DC. I always strive toprovide members of the synagogue I serve thesame care I look for my own family to receive.

At times there have been difficulties insynagogues with which I have worked. I am hereto help everyone regardless of their position onany issue. Please let me know how I can assistyou.

Affirmation of Synagogue Traditions. A keyquestion for the interim rabbi is: “What areimportant traditions of the synagogue that shouldbe affirmed?” The interim rabbi helps acongregation articulate its ideals. My goal asinterim rabbi will be to provide consistency andmaintain the traditions of the congregation.

As a note, please work with me as I learn thetraditions of the synagogue. I speak withsynagogue leaders to learn the traditions of a

congregation. Differences in the way I teach aclass or lead a service may come from mypersonal strengths, inadvertent changes, orinnovations that have been explored withsynagogue groups. I view things as, “Works inprogress,” and look for your thoughts andguidance.

Visions for the Future. The year with aninterim rabbi also provides synagogues that wisha time to explore new ideas for programs, innovations for worship, and experiences ofJewish learning. Synagogue growth is a processwhich should be sensitive and inclusive. I amavailable for you as a resource for personalquestions about Jewish life and, as thesynagogue would like, for growing fromcontemporary developments in the Reformmovement and Jewish world.

I look forward to meeting members of thesynagogue. Please call me if I can be of help toyou, you have a family member with a specialneed, or if you know of a congregant who Ishould contact. Pastoral care is my highestpriority.

The Torah offers a wonderful insight forJewish life. It says, “Serve the Eternal with joy;come before the One with rejoicing.” May wehave this joy as we affirm the traditions ofCongregation Emanu El, celebrate life, andshape dreams for the future.

L’Shalom

Rabbi Darryl Crystal

God, who had made us one nation out of many peoples, amid our diversities of race and tradition, unite us in acommon love of freedom and in a high ambition for ournational lifeContinue in us the pioneering spirit which led our ancestorsacross the estranging sea and upheld them in the wilder-ness.Deepen in the people of this land a devotion to the commongood, so that we may open new doors of hope to theneglected and oppressed. Cleanse our hearts from thegreed which preys upon others and deliver our politics fromcorruption.Help us to establish this land in righteousness.Embue with the spirit of wisdom those entrusted withauthority, that there may be peace within our borders andthat we may stand among the nations of the earth as anexample of justice and a power for good will.Let Your peace, O God, reign in all our hearts/To every council where nations bring their hopes and fears, grant wisdom and mutual understanding, that distrust andhatred may be diminished, and a common law of justice beestablished.Let peace, O God, prevail throughout the earth.

Happy Summer to all! Weare in a challenging butexciting time atCongregation Emanu El –not only of transition, butof healing; of movingforward and empoweringthe next generation, as wellas honoring our venerable

history and those who laid the foundation beforeus. I know we are all excited about our interim,Rabbi Crystal’s, arrival. I was privileged to be atvarious meetings we had together last month, including a workshop after the June boardmeeting. In the workshop, Rabbi Crystaldemonstrated how he plans to proceed and meetwith all the members of Congregation Emanu El.One of the questions he asked everyone to thinkabout was ‘what makes you proud to belong toEmanu El? It was encouraging and inspiring tohear the varied responses – pride in Sisterhood, afriendly and welcoming atmosphere, the Templehistory, a beacon of social action in thecommunity, music (!) and more. In my eight years serving this congregation Ihave been privy to many transformations, listened to voices of disappointment, frustration, hope, pride and gratitude. I want to express MYpride in being part of Congregation Emanu El, aspecial and diverse community, and am gratefulto be your cantor to help guide and serve you onthis communal journey – no matter how roughthe road – as we grow together with the ReformMovement at this time in our American Jewishhistory. If you are interested in chanting Torah onRosh Hashanah and/or Yom Kippur this year, please contact me if you have not already doneso! Our list of skilled chanters is growing – thenext Adult Cantillation class will begin after theHigh Holy Days in November. Please SAVE THE DATE for the evening ofWednesday, August 23rd which is RoshChodesh Elul - the month prior to the High HolyDays. Just as it is customary to prepare ourhomes, start getting holiday foods ready andretrieve our favorite apple and honey servers, themonth of Elul gives us the opportunity to prepareto open our hearts and souls before RoshHashanah. This will be a unique evening ofreflection, study and performance as we focus onBrit Olam, our board-approved Covenant ofSocial Action in collaboration withcongregations across America. ‘Brit Olam – TheWorld We Want’ Covenant is a commitment byclergy and key lay members to lead thecongregational or community rapid response tohatred and bigotry, through Jewish values. Wewill provide texts and short scenes from theTorah and classical and contemporary literatureto help remind us of the sacred principles that

govern our lives. If you are interested inparticipating in any of the readings, scenes, etc.,contact me at [email protected].

B’shalom,

Cantor Jennifer Bern-Vogel

On June 8, 2017 I had thehonor of being installed asCongregation Emanu El’s52nd President. My family'sroots to this historic place ofworship dates back to 1974.From my Bar Mitzvah in1975, to my daughter’srecent confirmation, myconnections run deep in thistemple community.

And so begins ourjourney as we work to reimagine this historiccongregation. On July 1st Rabbi Darryl Crystalwill join Congregation Emanu El as our InterimRabbi. Rabbi Crystal, and his unique skillset willhelp us redefine ourselves by asking threequestions: Who we are, what we want to be, andhow do we get there? In the coming weeks youwill be invited to attend a series ofcongregational “Meet and Greets” designed toanswer these very questions. I hope you will planto attend. These next twelve months offer aunique opportunity for our membership toself-examine as we set out to select our nextpermanent or “Settled” rabbi, hopefully, by thistime next year.

Change is never easy and oftentimes hard. However, during this time of self-reflection, I’mconfident we will become a stronger and morevital temple community. It’s been said; “Changeis the one constant in our lives”; And when thatchange comes, we have two choices: We candespair, or we can look forward to theopportunity change presents. Please join me inlooking forward with a positive outlook andexcitement for all the new possibilities to come.Congregation Emanu El should never be definedby any one person, but rather by its unifiedcommunity; a people which has endured changebefore and will so again. Through the ages, theJewish people have overcome unimaginableobstacles; and through it all, remained resilientand strong.

I look forward to standing strong with eachand every one of you as we move our belovedCongregation Emanu El into its bright newfuture, together.

L’Shalom,

Greg Weissman

Each year the president of the congregation isauthorized by the By-Laws to name At-Largemembers to serve on the Executive Committee.Greg Weissman, temple president, presented thenames of Steven Becker, Michael Kress andPaul Zipperstein to the Board of Directors forapproval. They were elected by acclamation.

All three have served on the ExecutiveCommittee at other times in their capacity aselected officers and bring to the deliberations ofthe Exective Conmmittee a wealth of experienceand commitment to the well-being of thecongregation. The Executive Committee is made up of theelected officers of the congregation, a repre-sentative of Sisterhood and members-at-largewho are selected by the president. The ExecutiveCommittee has a number of functions. It servesas the Personnel Committee, formulates theagendas for board meetings and acts in the placeof the board for emergency matters. We welcome Steven, Michael and Paul to theExecutive Committee.

Our Seniors for Seniors program has completedits second year of activities. More and moreseniors are attending the monthly events. In MaySeniors for Seniors was joined by the SeniorHavurah of Temple Beth El of Riverside. 80people attended and enjoyed the hilariousprogram presented by Comedienne Amy Ashton. In June, 40 people attended the program on“Troublesome Myths About My Religion”featuring Imam Imad Bayoun, Rev. PetraMalleis-Sternberg and Rabbi Hillel Cohn. During July and August the Seniors for Seniorsis taking a “vacation.” The new year will beginwith a luncheon and program on Wednesday,September 13th. Watch the mails and the Augustand September temple bulletins for informationabout the program. At its last luncheon, the group expressed adesire to work cooperatively with a group fromthe First United Methodist Church in Redlandsin providing “Happy Birthday Bags” for fosterchildren and youths in the greater SanBernardino area. Information on this programwill be given at the September 13th luncheon.

The long, hot days of summer take us to thebeach, out in the evenings for barbeques, splashing around in the pool, and drinkingcooling tall glasses of ice tea. We slow down abit, adjust to the kids out of school, relax ourmuscles. Maybe we read stories and have longconversations with friends, the kind that delvedeep into our lives and hearts. In May we told some stories that came fromdeeply felt lives. We’ve put them up on theCongregation Emanu El website and urge you totake a look. You may have heard them during theErev Shabbat services and want to have a furtherlook with more time to think about them. Or youmissed them entirely and might like to see howthose stories went. It’s easy. Go toemanuelsb.org, choose Tikkun Olam from thedropdown menu, then “mental health”. For example, the prince said: “The experienceI have had is that once you start talking about it,you realize that actually you’re part of quite abig club.” It took him a long time to start talkingabout it, a long time to even think honestly aboutit. And then his life changed for the better. Takea look at the trajectory of his young life, howmuch he went through, and how he learned toimprove his life and those of others.

For example, one of us said: “I knewintimately the pain of stigma, but didn’t knowwhen we founded the program if I had thestrength to share my personal story of mentalillness. Obviously, I do have that strength and Iam so much healthier and happier for it.” What isthat story and how is it continuing to unfold?Look for it also on the website. And in one more example, one of us said: “Sothe effect of someone playing a lyre and that of acomforting dog may not be that different.”What’s that about? Check out Mental HealthAwareness In Action on our website. Do you have any stories you could share?Talking to each other about the truth of our livesgives us strength and promotes health.Remember that song - “People who need peopleare the luckiest people in the world”?

A special effort is being made over the next fewmonths to beautify our temple campus. A taskforce is being headed by Leone and BradHyman. They will be enlisting the services ofvolunteers to adopt a portion of the spaciousgrounds of our campus and to plant and maintaindrought-resistant vegetation. Watch for anannouncement of some of the ambitious plans tobeautify our temple grounds.

Fellow Congregants,It was encouraging to see theturnout at the Annual Meet-ing. It is important that you allare aware of our plans andgoals and participate in thebusiness of CongregationEmanu El.

Without your input and, ofcourse, your financial support,

our direction would be limited. As you plan yourtravels for the summer, be sure to save somefunds to complete your financial obligations toCongregation Emanu El. In my next letter for thenew fiscal year, 2017-2018 we have some newchallenges. We have engaged a new educationdirector with the input of the majority of theparents of the SJL students. It is our commitmentto provide educational opportunities that willstrengthen our faith and culture to assure thefuture of Judaism in our community. As you know we have engaged an “InterimRabbi”, Rabbi Darryl Crystal, to lead us for thenext year and to assist us in determining the bestdirection to obtain a “Settled Rabbi” for thefuture. With your help we hope to be successfulin our search.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer.Marvin Reiter
