FLYING THE FLAG In a renewal of the G1 Darley July Cup stacked with quality, it will take another herculean performance from Michael Tabor=s colorbearer Starspangledbanner (Aus) (Choisir {Aus}) on Newmarket=s July Course today to provide Ballydoyle with their next pinnacle in a season of highs and lows so far. His dominant performance in the June 19 G1 Golden Jubilee S. had more than a shade of his sire about it, but that Australian ma- rauder was brought back down to earth by Oasis Dream (GB) in this prize seven years ago and it is always difficult to stay on top of this fast-moving divi- sion. With 10 of his 13 ri- vals re-opposing here, he will have to replicate the pillar-to-post surge which carried him to glory at the Royal meeting. AI think Aidan and Johnny [Murtagh] are of the genuinely held belief that Starspangledbanner has the ability to achieve great things,@ Coolmore=s Australian Business and Racing Manager Tom Magnier told PA Sport. AThe next step is, of course, the July Cup, a race that Aidan has won in the past with Stravinsky and Mozart (Ire). Obviously he will need to be at his very best again on Friday, but Aidan is still learning about the horse and feels that he may well have improved again since Ascot, which is a very exciting proposition, indeed. It takes a unique sort of horse to be able to perform at the highest level in two hemispheres, with many having tried and ulti- mately failed. Starspangledbanner was identified as a top-class colt with the scope to improve further on what he had achieved in Australia, hence our desire to acquire the horse. As things have materialized to date, he has certainly rewarded our faith in him.@ Cont. p2 Friday, Newmarket, Britain, post time: 3:10 p.m. DARLEY JULY CUP-G1, ,400,000, 3yo/up, 6fT SC PP HORSE SIRE JOCKEY TRAINER WT 1 5 Balthazaar’s Gift (Ire) Xaar (GB) Robinson Cox 131 2 10 Equiano (Fr) Acclamation (GB) M Hills B Hills 131 3 2 Kingsgate Native (Ire) Mujadil R Moore Stoute 131 4 13 Kinsale King K Yankee Victor Fallon O’Callaghan 131 5 7 Marchand d’Or (Fr) Marchand de Sable Bonilla Delzangles 131 6 8 Nicconi (Aus) Bianconi Oliver Hayes 131 7 9 Prime Defender (GB) Bertolini Winston B Hills 131 8 11 Strspngldbner (Aus) Choisir (Aus) Murtagh A O’Brien 131 9 3 Varenar (Fr) Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) Mosse de Ryr-Dpre 131 10 14 Alverta (Aus) Flying Spur (Aus) Angland Messara 128 11 12 Fleeting Spirit (Ire) Invincible Spirit (Ire) Dettori Noseda 128 12 4 Serious Attitude (Ire) Mtoto (GB) Fortune Guest 128 13 1 Showcasing (GB) Oasis Dream (GB) Buick Gosden 125 14 6 Society Rock (Ire) Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) Cosgrave Fanshawe 125 BUSINESS AS USUAL SETS TATJUL RECORD Three-year-old Business As Usual (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) smashed the record price for Tattersalls= July Sale in Newmarket last night when selling for 460,000gns (US$732,140) to Alastair Donald of the Kern Lillingston Association. Darley July Cup cont.

Due to the attritional nature of sprinting, dual winnersof top-level features are extremely rare, and the Search-ers Syndicate's Fleeting Spirit will be bidding for a pieceof history as she attempts to win back-to-back renew-als. Of all the vanquished in the Golden Jubilee, hercase may be the strongest as she was the first homeon the far side when fourth there. Trainer JeremyNoseda has made no secret of the fact that he expectsher to improve off that effort. AHopefully, she movesforward from her first racecourse start [of the year],and I hope there is no draw bias and we are drawn nearthe principal competition,@ he said. Stepping up fromfive furlongs is James Acheson=s revitalised Equiano, one of the precious few to have managed to duplicate aGroup 1 victory in this category when adding this year=sG1 King's Stand S. to his 2008 renewal. His sole defeatthis term came at the hands of Cheveley Park Stud=sKingsgate Native in Haydock=s G2 Temple S. May 22,and that rival faltered when only sixth behind him in theJune 15 King's Stand. AI don=t think the draw helped atAscot, and we are not particularly well drawn here,either--we are well away from the pace,@ Cheveley Park=sManaging Director Chris Richardson told PA Sport.AThere were some excuses last time--he=d had a sinusinfection and needed a course of antibiotics--and hope-fully that is the reason Ryan Moore said he ran so flat.@

AIt=s an extremely tough race, but the horse is in goodform,@ Richardson added. AAfter Haydock, Ryan told usnot to be worried about going six furlongs with him,and it shouldn=t be a problem. But sprinters run onegood race and then disappoint, so it=s hard to knowwhat to expect.@ Patrick Sheehy=s Kinsale King, whowas third in the Golden Jubilee, is back for more andthe Mar. 27 G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen winner is an-other expected to step up off that display. CarlO'Callaghan=s pioneering spirit has been infectious sincelanding in Britain, and he is confident an improvement ison the cards. AHe come out of the race in good formand we opted to stay here and give it another shot,@the affable Irishamn told PA Sport. ABecause he ran sowell, it sort of forced our hand. It was his first time onthe grass and his first time in a straight line, and he'dtravelled halfway across the world. He=s perked up alot. He hadn=t run in 10 weeks going into Ascot, buthe=s had three weeks between these races, his weighthas stayed pretty even and he=s been eating well. Hehad a good blow-out the other day on the Al Bahathrigallop. He's in great form, he's jumping out of his skin. All the horses behind Starspangledbanner are probablygoing to move up, and I think it will be more of a horserace this time around. We=ll be the underdog, but wedon=t mind that.@

impressive winner of the GII Inside In-formation S. at Gulfstream Mar. 14,but, after setting the pace in the slop inthe GI Humana Distaff S. at ChurchillMay 1, faded to fifth. "Last out in the Humana, she broke from the one postgoing seven-eighths on a >sloppy' track, and had to useher speed a little more than we might have liked,@trainer Eddie Kenneally explalined. AA combination ofthe post, the track and the way the race developed allmay have conspired against her, but we've given her abreak since then and are looking forward to this race."She is 7-2 on the Princess Rooney morning line.

Sans Frontieres started out on the right note with aneye-catching win in a Lingfield maiden in September2008 and was the closest rival to Delegator (GB)(Dansili {GB}) at the end of the G3 Craven S. on hissophomore bow on the Rowley Mile here last April.Third in the G2 Dante S. at York the following month, the chestnut was sidelined with an injury thereafter. He was off the board on all three starts this term: theApr. 15 G3 Earl of Sefton S. back on the Rowley Mile;the May 6 G3 Huxley S. at Chester; and Royal Ascot's G2 Hardwicke S. June 19. On the latter occasion, heshowed that he had retained ability when fourth despitea troubled trip, and was fitted with sheepskincheekpieces for the first time here. It was soon clearthat the headgear was working, as Sans Frontierestraveled with enthusiasm despite being held up in rearby Tom Queally. Making smooth progress betweenrivals to take on the front-running Tazeez inside thefinal quarter, he assumed command before the furlongpole and lengthened up the rising ground to comfort-ably assert from Redwood. AI can't say I honestly ex-pected this, and I was beginning to be a bit unsure asto whether we were going to reach the level I hadhoped when he was a three-year-old,@ winning trainerJeremy Noseda commented.

AUnfortunately, he got injured when he was justcoming to himself last year ahead of the G2 King Ed-ward VII S., and that stopped him for the season,@Noseda added. AHe's taken a bit of time to get there, but I didn't have him fitenough first time and Ishouldn't have run himon soft ground at Ches-ter, where he alsochoked. That led to ususing a tongue-tie, andhe'd been happier in hiswork with it, but atAscot he was never trav-eling with any rhythm tomake himself competitive. There is no doubt that heapplies himself and tries hard, but we just needed to gowith something to make him show tactical speed, andhe seemed sharper in the cheekpieces at home. There isno issue with his wind, but he just gets tight at theraces and hasn't relaxed. We could go for somethinglike the G3 Geoffrey Freer S. [at Newbury Aug. 14] or[Aug. 29] G2 Grand Prix de Deauville if the ground isfast, but we'll try and stay away from the big boys inthe English Group 1s. RISK AND REWARD Fasig-Tipton sales grounds were particularly fertileground for the Firestone family in the 1970s. AtSaratoga in 1974, the husband-and-wife team ofBertram and Diana Firestone purchased not one but two

future stars. Honest Pleasure, a$45,000 yearling buy, wasnamed the following year=schampion juvenile colt after aseason that included three GradeI wins. At three, he added fourmore--the Flamingo S., FloridaDerby, Blue Grass S. andTravers, finished second in theGI Kentucky Derby, and later ranForego to a head in a memorablerenewal of the GI Marlboro Cup. That >74 sale also produced

the fine Firestone colorbearer Optimistic Gal, acquiredfor $55,000. The daughter of Sir Ivor, who like HonestPleasure was trained by LeRoy Jolley, collected sixGrade I wins, plus a tally in the Kentucky Oaks (then aGrade II). But despite the achievements of those runners, andlater others like Theatrical (Ire), it is another Fasig grad-uate who will be forever tied to the Firestone name.Genuine Risk, unearthed four years later at the 1978Fasig-Tipton July Selected Yearlings Sale, would godown in racing lore as just the second filly in history towin the Kentucky Derby. She was the first filly to runand place in all three legs of the Triple Crown, and bythe time she was retired as a four-year-old in 1981, shewas, in many eyes, one of the best fillies of all time. And it all might not have happened but for the Fire-stones= son Matthew, who at the tender age of 14 wasdirectly responsible for the selection of Genuine Risk. Matt Firestone, now an accomplished equestrian andbloodstock agent, was years away from buying a drinklegally, placing a bet or even driving when he accompa-nied his parents to the July Sale in 1978. As was hishabit, his father had gone through the catalogue withfarm manager Marvin Greene, and picked out theirchoices on pedigree before examining them in person.Once they arrived at the sale, Matt looked at the cata-logue himself, and a filly by Affirmed=s sire ExclusiveNative, from the immediate family of Kentucky Derbywinner Tomy Lee, jumped off the page. AIt was the day of the sale--the sale was at nightthen, I think--and this filly wasn=t on our list,@ Firestoneremembered earlier this week.

AWith her pedigree, she would normally been the typeof filly we would have looked at, and I remember think-ing that it was strange that she wasn=t on there. So Ihiked up to the barn and took a look at her. I liked her.She was a fairly feminine filly, was put together verywell and had a great walk. So I went down and wasable to convince my dad to go up and look at her, too.He liked her, and put a price on her--$35,000.@ Since he had picked her out, Matt was tasked withthe bidding duties, as well. As the price on the boardedged past the $30,000 mark, it looked as if she mightexceed that $35,000 limit. But Matt=s $32,000 offerwent unanswered, and the flashy chestnut, namedGenuine Risk, would race in the Firestones= green-and-white silks.

AObviously, when you are looking at yearlings, younever really know which ones are going to go on andbecome stars,@ Matt Firestone said when asked if hethought Genuine Risk was special from the start. AButyou go after the ones you like, and hope it works out.@ The Firestones got an inkling it might work out earlyin Genuine Risk=s juvenile year, in 1979, after favorablereports from the breaking-and-training crew. Moved toJolley=s care in New York, Genuine Risk opened heraccount with an easy win in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden inthe slop at Belmont in late September. She added anallowance victory 18 days later, then completed herseason with a pair of black-type victories at Aqueduct. She won the one-mile Tempted S. by three lengths, then battled back along the rail to best Smart Angle bya nose in the nine-furlong GII Demoiselle S. in mid-No-vember. Genuine Risk takes the 1980 Kentucky Derby churchilldowns.com

TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 7/9/10 • PAGE 11 of 15 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

At that point in time, the Firestones had two Derbyrunners-up to the credit. In addition to Honest Pleasure,Firestone homebred General Assembly, a son of Secre-tariat, ran second to Spectacular Bid that very year,1979. General Assembly got a measure of redemptionwith a track-record-setting performance in the GITravers S. at Saratoga, but the Midsummer Derby isn=tquite the Kentucky Derby, and the Firestones were stillin search of the roses. With their undefeated GenuineRisk in the barn heading into 1980, they thought theymight have a chance in the first Derby of the new de-cade. AI think anytime you have a good two-year-old, youare thinking about the Derby,@ said Matt Firestone. AWethought she was the type of filly that had what it took.We had a lot of horses in Europe, as well, and it justwasn=t uncommon to run fillies against colts there. Wethought that, if she was the right kind, there was noreason she couldn=t run against the boys.@ Genuine Risk began her three-year-old campaign witha win in a seven-furlong allowance at Gulfstream inMarch, and, after a one-mile handicap victory at Aque-duct in April, she was ready for her first big test againstmales: the GI Wood Memorial at the Big A. Dismissed at 8-1 despite her unblemished record, sheran a strong third to Plugged Nickle, finishing 1 3/4lengths back, while just losing the bob to ColonelMoran for second. AIt was her first time against colts, and I think shemay have gotten bounced around a little that race,@Firestone said of the effort. Still, to some, including trainer LeRoy Jolley, it wasevidence that the she perhaps didn=t belong with thecolts on the first Saturday in May. But the Firestonesdidn=t see it that way. AIf she=d been a colt and finished third in the Wood,no one would give it a second thought to go to theDerby,@ said Firestone. AShe didn=t get beat by much, and we still thought she was at the top of the class.@ Though reluctant at first, Jolley agreed that GenuineRisk would take on the boys in the big one. AThere were some conversations,@ said Firestone.AWe=d been to the Derby a couple of times, with HonestPleasure and with General Assembly, and my fatherreally thought she deserved a shot at it, and that=swhat we were going to do.@ Asked if the they were criticized for sending the fillyto the Derby, Firestone said, AI don=t recall any criticism, though she may have been discounted a little bit. Ithink it had been 20-something years since a filly hadrun in the Derby, so she went off a bigger price thanshe would have if she=d not been a filly. I thought shehad a better chance than that the media was givingher.@ Matt Firestone didn=t get much sleep the night beforethe Derby, but he admits that having a longshot didhave its advantages. AIt wasn=t the same kind of pressure as if you weregoing in with the favorite,@ he explained.

AWe said, >Hey, we=re going to have a good day and

hope it turns out well.= We went over to the back-

stretch that morning and saw her, then went over and

watched the races.@

Breaking from post 10 as a 13-1 shot, Genuine Risk

raced wide with cover off a trio of dueling rivals. Still

well wide up the backstretch, she began to make her

move going into the far turn under Jacinto Vasquez,

who had begun to ride in earnest. The pair ranged up

on the outside powerfully, and as they hit the quarter

pole, Genuine Risk took a narrow advantage. She edged

clear to a two-length lead at the three-sixteenths pole,

and dug in gamely to defeat Rumbo by a length.

AThat was a lot of fun--that=s about as much fun as

you can have in racing,@ Firestone smiled.

The doubters silenced, Genuine Risk became the first

filly since Regret, 65 years earlier, to wear the roses,

and gave the Firestones their Derby hero. Prestige in

racing circles aside, it was a victory that meant a lot to

the tight-knit family.

AI had been involved with my parents= racing opera-

tion for as long as I can remember,@ said Matt

Firestone. AWe spent a lot of time at the track, going up

to Saratoga together, going to the barn every morning,

things like that. I felt like I spent more time and learned

more on the backstretch with my dad than I ever did at

school.@ Cont. p12

Genuine Risk would go on to finish second in the GI Preakness S. and GI Belmont S., the former in acontroversial running that would take the stewards atPimlico and, ultimately, a local court, to sort out. ButGenuine Risk had already earned her place in history.Since then, only one other filly, Winning Colors, hasdefeated males in the Derby. Today, Genuine Risk seems curiously adrift betweentwo eras, not quite belonging to the super >70s of Sec-retariat, Affirmed and Seattle Slew, but not really partof Breeders= Cup-ruled >80s, either. Her status can beviewed from different angles: whether she was a hard-knocking throwback of old, or a forerunner, a trailblazerfor the likes of Rags to Riches, Rachel Alexandra andZenyatta, probably depends on who you ask. But nearlyall would agree: Genuine Risk was one for the ages. AI think it=s so hard to compare horses from differenteras,@ said Firestone ABut I think when Genuine Riskwas on top of her game, she was as good as any fillyever.@ -Lucas Marquardt

HALFWAY HOME Monmouth Park=s Elite Summer Meet is fast ap-proaching the midway point, with 21 of the 50 daysalready in the record books. Has it been a success? Thenumbers speak for themselves. Through the July 4thweekend in 2009, the meet had generated total handleof $106,474,870 over 36 days of racing. This year,Monmouth=s total handle to date is a whopping$157,042,169--an increase of 47.5 percent despite thefact that there have been 15 fewer cards. On-track handle has made more modest gains. Wag-ering at the track through July 4th weekend last yearwas $14,287,368; this year, it is at $15,899,476, again of 11.3 percent. But the crowd appears to includesignificantly more serious players--per capita betting ontrack has risen 32 percent, from $53.60 in 2009 to$70.65 in 2010. It=s not surprising that Monmouth officials get giddylooking at the numbers. AIs this really even real? It=s beyond our wildest expec-tations,@ Monmouth Vice President and General Man-ager Bob Kulina said. AIf Iwould have gone in andgiven these projectionswhen we were startingthis, they would=ve said,>He=s lost his mind,= andlocked me up. There=s noway you=re going to pre-dict, with everythingthat=s going on in our in-dustry and with the econ-omy, that you=re going to be up these kinds of num-bers. It=s staggering, it=s hard to believe, and hopefullyit continues.@ With all the hype that preceded opening day, it wasexpected the season would break sharply, but, whilethere are still nine weekends to go, it appears it hasstamina as well as early speed. AI think the enthusiasm is still there,@ Kulina remarked.AOur business has been up pretty strongly. Our [simul-cast] transmissions are really doing well.@ Mother Nature has mostly been kind to the meet. Theprevailing drought-like conditions are having an adverseeffect on the local flora, and mandatory water restric-tions have been issued for Monmouth County. But untilscorching heat hit the area last weekend, the weatherhad been perfect for a day at the races. Cont. p13

TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 7/9/10 • PAGE 13 of 15 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

AThis was the first weekend we experienced someweather issues in the form of the extreme heat, so thatobviously takes a toll,@ Kulina said. ABut it was still agood weekend. We wrestle with how can we keep theenergy up, but so far, other than this heat, it=s beenpretty good.@ There had been some concern that business on Fri-days would not hold up, but the wagering and thecrowds have been healthy. Attendance over the fiveFridays to date has averaged 6,136, with on-trackhandle averaging $539,357 and total handle averaging$6,309,602.

AFridays have gone really well,@ Kulina said. ATheyhave been probably a bigger surprise than some of theother things that have happened.@ Even more encouraging is that the number of horsesper race has risen a solid 20 percent over 2009, a fac-tor that Monmouth=s VP considers of tantamount im-portance. AOur field size is almost right where we were hopingit would be,@ Kulina offered. AWhen we were puttingthis together, I was hoping we could get between 8.5and nine starters per race on average. We're right atnine, and last week we were a tick over nine per race.Last year, we were at 7.4, 7.5 [runners per race]. AIn my mind, that=s the single biggest reason ourhandle is so strong,@ he added. AIncreased field sizemakes for more competitive races and fewer reallyshort-priced horses winning, which is what the playerswant to see. There is much more value in our productthan there has been in the past.@ The meet now builds to its annual highlight, the $1-million GI Haskell Invitational S., set for Sunday,Aug. 1. The weeks leading to Monmouth=s showpiecealso have promise. AWe=re coming into a busy part of our schedule now,@Kulina said. AWe have our >St. Paddy=s Day= coming up[July 11], and then we have the car show and RachelAlexandra the [July 24-25] weekend, then we have theHaskell. July is good for us as far as the marketing andentertainment portion of the program.@

A Real Ferrari... The car show might not be a huge draw for racingfans, but the coup of landing Horse of the Year RachelAlexandra for an overnight stakes race will certainlybring them through the turnstiles. The Lady=s Secret S.,originally scheduled to be run at 1 1/16 miles for apurse of $150,000 on the Haskell undercard, has beenmoved to July 24, lengthened to 1 1/8 miles and hadits purse raised to $400,000, all in order to lure thechamp. The event did not happen overnight. AWe started talking to [Rachel=s connections]--and wetalked with [Zenyatta=sconnections]--in late February, early March,@ Kulina said.AWe=ve been talking all alongabout trying to do something forone or for both. We=ve been onthis a long time. AWe just think it adds to whatwe=re trying to do here, andwhat we=ve always tried to do.Having the Horse of the Yearcome the week before theHaskell, which is kind of a slowweek for us, energizes our fanbase. It=s a big deal.@ Cont. p14

TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 7/9/10 • PAGE 14 of 15 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

The accommodations made to the Rachel Alexandra

camp caused some grumbling, but there are no regrets

on the Monmouth frontside.

AWhenever you [make major changes to a stakes], it=s

a concern, but the way we set it up last winter was

that this would be the race that we would play around

with to try to fit it into the two fillies= schedules,@

Kulina explained. AIt=s an overnight race, so it=s some-

thing that can be a little more flexible. We had the

complete support of the New Jersey horsemen to go

out and try to get one or both of the fillies.

AYou can sit here and be a purist and be critical of the

move, and that would be fair,@ he continued. ABut I=m

likening it to last year when the Lakers came in to play

the Nets. They sold out the Izod Center, because every-

body wanted to come and see Kobe Bryant play. And I

think that=s kind of what we=re doing for true racing

fans this year. We=re going to give them another chance

to see one of the truly great fillies of our time run.@

While overall field size has been impressive at

Monmouth, it is likely the Lady=s Secret will be a tough

race to fill.

AIt=ll be hard--it=s not going to be the easiest thing

we=re going to try to do,@ Kulina said with a chuckle.

ABut people are coming to see her run--I have two fam-

ily members that are coming just to see Rachel. They

don=t really care who she=s running against.

AThe reaction I=ve received since we announced it

from the fans has been wonderful. Even some players

have shocked me, telling me, >we=re so glad we=re get-

ting to see her.= They=re not going to say that this is

going to be a great wagering experience, they just want

to see a champion. Getting her here is one of those

marketing promotions you do to reward your custom-

ers. This is a >thank you= to all our customers who come

to support us.@

Unknown Territory... The month of July brings two new twists to the EliteSummer Meet. The first starts today, with the first ofthree twilight cards. Post time for the first race will be2:10 p.m. July 9, 16 and 23. AIt will be interesting to see the next phase of theexperiment--how this goes,@ Kulina said. AWe haven=tdone it in 20 years--we can=t really remember when wedid it last, the late >80s or early >90s, but it was a longtime ago. But we=re going to try it, and we=ll see how itgoes. This will be a good test to see if there are anylegs to some of the theories we=re trying. We hope itgoes well, but we just don=t know.@ The second date looming large on the calendar is theopening of the Saratoga meet, which kicks off July 23.Racing at the upstate New York track will offer seriouscompetition for the betting dollar, and for the region=srunners. AThat=s another one of the >X= factors,@ Kulina re-marked. ASaratoga, in my mind, is still the best racing inthe country, period. Every year we go against them. Itwill be interesting to see how our transmission numbersstack up against Saratoga and Del Mar. But a lot ofpeople across the country have noticed us, obviously, just by the sheer numbers of what they=re betting onus. If our field size holds up and we can continue to puton the same type of racing, I think we will remainstrong.@

Accountability... The Elite Summer Meet was billed as offering a mil-lion dollars a day in purses. On paper, it looks asthough the track is paying out quite a bit less than that. The purses for Monday=s holiday card, for instance, which included a pair of $100,000 stakes races, totaledjust $778,7000. But it turns out that, while every dollar from thepurse account goes to the horsemen, not all of it islisted on the overnight. AWe will spend all of the $50 million,@ Kulina assured.ABut here=s the dilemma when you talk purses--that $50million includes a lot of things. Right off the top of the$50 million, the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen=sAssociation takes 7.5 percent--that=s for the workmen=scomp and for their organization. Secondly, included inthat $50 million is $4.7 million in graded stakes, so youdon=t see that on a daily basis. That=s $9 million rightthere. The Jersey breeders get $2.2 million for theirawards program--that comes off the top as well. Andthen the $1,500 that we pay back to last is projectedto be somewhere around $4 million. If you add thosenumbers up, then you see it--every dollar of that 50million will be allocated at the end of the season. AfterLabor Day, the $50 million will be gone.@ Cont. p15

That means, of course, that the purse account is notsustained by brisk wagering alone. Without the casinosubsidy--a $30-million-a-season deal that expires thisyear--or some other type of supplement, the Elite Sum-mer Meet could be one and done. AIt would be a different type of meet [without thesubsidy],@ Kulina admitted. AYou need to have themoney if you=re going to attract the best equine andhuman athletes in our industry. Without it, it would bea different model. I=m not saying it wouldn=t be a bettermodel than the one [previous to the Elite SummerMeet], but I don=t think it would be anyway near asstrong without this purse level.@ But, he added, the casinos are not the only potentialsource of supplemental monies. AI look at it as purse funding--wherever it comesfrom,@ Kulina said. AThere=s a lot of ways to fundpurses, and we just need to figure it out.@

What the Future Holds... Will the positive reception for Monmouth Park=s EliteSummer Meet be enough to guarantee its future?Monmouth officials are not yet ready to make predic-tions. AWe made our original assumptions, and now we=resaying, >Let=s just let it happen and then sit back andanalyze it,=@ Kulina said. AIt gets to be too much toanalyze it on a daily or weekly basis. I think we willlearn a lot of things, but we have basically one monthon the books. It will be interesting to see if we cankeep the enthusiasm going, what does August look likeafter the Haskell, how do we need to tweak it downthe road.@ Officials will now focus on the day-to-day work ofmaking the meet a success, rather than the strato-spheric figures generated on a daily basis. After LaborDay, the number crunching will start in earnest. AWe=re going to try to enjoy the meet, then see wherewe are with the bottom line--we think it=s going to bevery positive,@ Kulina said. AThe numbers on the trans-missions are higher, so we need to sit back and seehow our receptions are doing on the dark days, andtake a look at the bottom line.@ And what is the current bottom line? AWe think this is working, and will turn out to be theright model for us,@ Kulina said. ANow we just have tofigure out how much money is needed to do this againin the future.@

SHAREHOLDERS FILE SUIT AGAINST MI DE-VELOPMENTS Five United States-based investmentfirms have filed suit against MI Developments in theOntario Superior Court of Justice, according to TorontoStar. The suit alleges that MID was involved in a Amyr-iad of connector-related party loans and other transac-tions@ with troubled subsidiary Magna EntertainmentCorporation (MEC). The firms, which include Hotchkisand Wiley Capital Management and Farallon CapitalManagement, have a 26.1-percent share of MID=s eq-uity. MEC filed for bankruptcy in 2009. The filing alsostates, Athe MEC bankruptcy transactions represented acontinuation of the defendants= improper efforts toensure that the Stronach group maintained control overMEC=s principal horse racing assets regardless of thecost to MID.@ Dennis Mills, MID=s vice chairman andchief executive officer, said in a statement, "We believethat this claim is entirely without merit. It appears thatthese shareholders filed their claim weeks ago, on May 21, 2010, but decided not to serve it upon MID orany of the other Defendants, to guard against the ex-piry of a limitation period. This is the second claim ofthis nature commenced against MID by dissident share-holders. The first claim was determined by the courts tobe entirely without merit and was dismissed both attrial and on appeal. The shareholders were admonishedby the courts for their conduct in pursuing thoseclaims, and were required to pay the costs of MID on asubstantial indemnity basis. If and when the sharehold-ers who have commenced this new claim decide topursue it, MID will defend the claim vigorously and willonce again seek the highest cost award possible in thecircumstances."
