Another “Heatherdale Cup Function” has come and gone. The event once again, certainly lived up to the reputation as being our Club’s Social Function of the Year. It was great to see the many members who supported the chosen Pop and Rock Stars theme by choosing to come in fancy dress. Congratulations to Bev Cox ( El-vis Presley ) and Garry Pickering ( Sergeant Pepper ) who won the Best Costumed Female and Male prizes. Another great “Live Call” by Alan Lyons and well done to all members of the “Heatherdale Cup Committee.” Sadly, November saw the passing of another stalwart of our Club – Life Member Margaret Eklund. Margaret joined Heatherdale as a Foundation Member and be-gan her bowling in 1978. Throughout her 37 years at Heatherdale, Margaret’s con-tribution was absolutely outstanding. She served on the Ladies Committee for 18 years, held the position of President between 1993 & 1995, Secretary for 7 Sea-sons between 1981 & 1989 as well as Assistant Secretary. In those 37 years with our Club, Margaret was a member of many other Club Committees including Se-lection, Catering, Social and Sponsorship. For her amazing contribution to our Club, Margaret was honoured with Life Membership in 1995. Margaret may have retired from Committee involvement in 2010 but she most certainly continued to support all our Club’s Social activities. A regular on annual week-ends away, an eager “Footy Tipping” participant, supporter of all our Social Functions, etc. Thank you Margaret, for your total commitment and participation. We will miss you dearly. .

In our last “Without Bias” we welcomed back from Eng-land, our very own World Champion, Lucas Protopapas with the Gold Medal he won in the Multi-Disability Pairs Championship. Shortly after his return, he travelled to the Gold Coast to compete in the National Multi Disabil-ity Championships. There he again excelled, to win the Gold Medal in the Singles. Lucas now holds the Victo-rian Singles and Pairs Titles, the Australian Singles Title as well as the World Pairs Title in the Multi Disability Class – a truly great achievement.

Through November, the Thursday night “Barefoot Bowls” venture has not as been as successful as last year due to the inclement weather conditions on these nights. However, the number of Business Group Bookings are on the increase with a cou-ple of excellent evenings already conducted. Quite a few December bookings have been made and any willing volunteers to help out with these events would be most welcome. Please remember these events are primarily designed to increase the exposure of our Club within the Community – not exclusively as a drive for new members. Also, the income from these events, though small in some cases, does actually assist in the financial viability of our club and does also assist in often re-ducing necessary increases in the annual Club membership fees. Refurbishment of our Bar has taken a step forward with a contract to install new lighting being let to one of our sponsors – Tony Lloyd Bailey ( Pinnacle Electrical). This should considerably brighten up this area of the Club. Other matters mentioned previous newsletters, such as the replacement of our carpet, still involve discussion with the Whitehorse Council and our Lease arrange-ment with them. Lastly, Alan Moore, immediate Past Chairman of the Club’s Board of Management, has been persuaded to take up the vacant position of Assistant Secretary on the Board. His continued involvement with “Sponsorship” and the Club’s website has been very welcome and his future input on the Board will be most welcome.

May I take this opportunity to wish all our members the compliments of the forth-coming festive season. I hope you all have a merry and safe Christmas with your family and/or friends and I extend my very best wishes to you for a happy and prosperous 2016. Cheers, Gunter Loidl Chaiman

. As we approach the Xmas break it seems no time at all since the start of the pen-nant season. All of our various sub committees have been working diligently to carry out all of the functions needed to keep this club running; much of this work is not seen seen by the people not directly involved; only the finished product ap-pears ; and as a general rule most members are satisfied with this .At the time of writing this report we have just had two of the three Tuesday teams and four of the Saturday sides all winning and this an excellent result for our club.

V P Bev and Treasurer Jim have been organizing the ordering of club clothing through Hensilite and if you have not already placed an order get to it now the larger the order the better the price will be and you will benefit.

Gala Day and Smorgasbord are almost upon us , please support thes events as the organizers have worked very hard on your behalf .The club Xmas dinner and Bowls breakup also are very close .please support the Xmas raffle as it is for the benefit of the club I realise that this year we seem to have raffles galore but all of the prizes are worth winning ,especially the watch.

As this is the last without bias before Xmas I take this opportunity to wish all members a safe and a happy Xmas , and good bowling for the rest of the year. PS all of the non bowlers and our people on the sick list get better and keep on turning up to support the club

It has been a busy few months for all the Bowls Committee members since the last Without Bias. It is hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the pennant season and Christmas is fast approaching. So far the pennant season results have been mainly good with a number of teams in or close to the top four on the ladders, although a few teams are lower than we would like. Hopefully this will turn around in the next few weeks. Night pennant has also started on Tuesday evenings. Monthly Monday and Wednesday 2 bowl triples, Thursday 2-4-2 and twilight events, as well as Wednesday social bowls, are well underway so there is plenty of bowling for members. Please continue to support these events to make them a success. The Regional and Club championships are well under way and members need to keep an eye on the noticeboard for entry forms to these forthcoming championship events. Congratulations to Carol Protopapas who reached the final four in the Women’s Triples at the recent Victorian Open. The Bowls Committee recently received a fitting kit from Henselite for members to try on the different sizes of sample mens trousers/shorts or ladies pants before they order them. Members have been able to try on these samples for the last 2 Satur-days so they get the correct sizes of the new purple uniform trousers/pants. Unfor-tunately the kit has to be returned to Henselite this week. Thanks to Jim Corcoran and Bev Morgan for co-ordinating the fittings. Note, these garments will be ordered by the Club direct from Henselite, not from the Doncaster Sporting Gear Shop. Thank you to the members who agreed to requalify as Umpires. Bob Johnson and Jim Corcoran requalified as Umpires. The club could still use a few more Umpires to ensure that we have at least 2 umpires or measurers available for each home game for both Midweek and Saturday pennant. Please see me if you are interested in becoming an Umpire or a Measurer next season. Groups of Rangeview Primary School students have been coming to the club on Friday afternoons. They are using the Junior Jack Attack kits the club purchased last year. Thanks to Fiona McNamara for co-ordinating the running of these ses-sions and the members who have assisted Fiona. A class from Vermont Secondary School is scheduled to come to the club next year. Volunteers are needed to help Fiona run these sessions, so please contact Fiona if you can assist. Barefoot Bowls is running on Thursday nights from 6.00 pm, co-ordinated by Gunter Loidl. This is a potential way of gaining new members and some members will be required to help on these nights. Other groups are also requesting the use of the club facilities for barefoot bowls and a meal as Christmas approaches. Please vol-unteer to help on some of these nights.the club in so many ways. Without them the club could not function.

MARGARET EKLUND

On Thursday 19th November 2015 I and many others attended the Funeral Ser-vice of Margaret Mary Eklund a lady whom we all admired and respected for her diligence in all things. I met Margaret in October 1991, she was at that time Vice President of the Ladies Bowls Division and as time went by I got to know that she was an important part of our Club because of her commitment to what she did. Margaret was on the Sponsorship committee with Max Clark for approximately 8 years and she was on the Social Committee for a number years but her calendar was getting too full so she resigned. On Invitation Days Margaret would arrive at the Club early so that she could wel-come personally all the visitors as they arrived and she insisted we would be called the friendly club. Margaret was a friend to everyone but she made a point of seeking out anyone who needed a friend and that is what I loved most about her. I will remember her for the rest of my days and I don’t if there is a heaven but if there is Margaret is there asleep in the arms of the angels. Joyce Sawyers

CLUB STRUCTURE – THE WAY FORWARD Background

When the Heatherdale Recreation and Bowls Club (“the Club”) was first established it was a requirement of the Whitehorse City Council that the Club be set up as a Recreation and Bowls Club with a Management Committee separate from the Bowls Committees. The Club operated under this structure from that time to May 2012 when the Mens and La-dies Bowls Committees were merged and one Bowls Committee was established. Since that time the Club has had two operating Commit-tees, a Bowls Committee that managed the Bowls activities of the Club and the Management Committee. At the time that these changes oc-curred the Club had a total of 222 members of which 196 were bowling members. The current Club membership is 187 of which 143 are bowl-ing members. The reasons for maintaining a two Committee structure no longer exist. It is not anticipated that there will be any objections to the proposed changes from the Council. As the number of members has decreased and the age of the current members has increased it has be-come more difficult for the Club to fill the positions on each of the Committees and the various sub-committees that are required to run the activities of the Club.

Therefore the current structure of the HRBC Committees encompassing the

HRBC Board of Management and the Bowls Committee is no longer practical and there is a requirement for it to be modified and stream-lined to provide a more appropriate and efficient structure to manage the operations of the Club.

The Process The HRBC Board is examining all of the relevant issues regarding the Man-

agement structure of the Club and Bowls Section and will recommend a

The 4 stages of life: 1. You believe in Santa Claus 2. You don't believe in Santa Claus 3. You dress up as Santa Claus 4. You look like Santa Claus Remember, Christmas isn't about how big the tree is, or what's under it. It's about who's around it Last year, I asked Santa for the sexiest person ever for Christmas. I woke up in a box. The awkward moment when Santa Claus has the same wrapping paper as your parents. A song told me to Deck the Halls...so I did. Mr.and Mrs. Hall are not very happy. Dear Santa, I was framed. This holiday season, in lieu of gifts, I've decided to give everyone my opinion. I try to be unusually kind and compassionate to those around me during the Holi-days, because I never know who will end up being my Secret Santa.

It's almost Christmas again. Time to think of

all those small, but useful and inexpensive gifts. The best place to start is the Trading Ta-ble. We have a good supply of beautiful padded coat hangers, both ladies and gents hand-kerchiefs and many other gift ideas. Don't forget our candy cane mice, cute face washer reindeers and beautiful Christmas bells to decorate the tree. There are still more of the lovely handmade Christmas cards available. We hope you will all come over and check it out. Merry Christmas to all From Linda At The Table

TRADING TABLE

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING THE LEAD Many Bowlers see the position of being the LEAD as being the last person picked in the Team. This is very false thinking so let us look how important the Lead is to the overall suc-cess of the Team. The truth is if the Lead gets His or Her bowls in the head consistently the team mates who follow have much better chance of building on the foundations set by the Lead and gaining multiple shots’ So what makes a good lead?. They realize they are responsible for setting up the end they must be resilient and patient undaunted in their role, accepting that their shot bowl could be moved they must just front up on the next end and put another good bowl in the head. They get their satisfaction from knowing the opposition have to use weighted bowls to get rid of his or hers and eventually they will grind them down. Put simply a Lead must come to the mat have total focus bowl the Jack to the required length then get your bowls as close as you can. If you do this you have done your job and aided the Team. I would encourage all leads to spend time practicing rolling the Jack you must be able to roll it to within a meter of where the Skip requests also in your bowls practice bowl to different lengths, do not become a one length Bowler. I WISH YOU GOOD LEADING Frank

Management structure appropriate for the future Management of the

Club. A number of proposed structures are being considered by the Board and Members are invited to provide feedback to the Board re-garding the proposed restructure.

A Special General Meeting will be held in early 2016 to consider the recom-

mended changes and to vote on any changes to the Constitution that may be required. The main changes required in the Constitution relate to the composition of the Club Board and the removal of references to the Bowls Committee.

New Structure for Club and Bowls Management The Board sees this as an opportune time to streamline the Club structure

and, in conjunction with the Bowls Committee, has recommended that the Club move to a single Management Committee that is responsible for all of the Club activities. There were a number of advantages with this approach.

(1) There are currently two Committees responsible for managing the Club’s activities and there are 15 people on these Committees.

(2) Committees have in recent elections received insufficient nominations to fill all Committee positions prior to the AGM;

(3) The talent and skills of Members is spread between a number of Com-mittees. If there was one Club Committee responsible for the Manage-ment of the Club and Bowls activities then the talent of the Members is centralised in one Committee;

Page 10: FRIDAY DECEMBER 11 2015 6.30 PMhrbc.org.au/downloads/w-bias 2015-12.pdf · Doncaster Sporting Gear 9848 7387 Holiday Accommodation (Max & Margaret Clark) 9877 5823 9873 1747 Kaye

10

Lucky Number 210

(4) There is an overlap of functions and responsibilities and Members do not have a clear idea of the responsibilities of each Committee, for exam-ple, there are Members who have a suggestion, query or complaint who are unsure of the responsible Committee to deal with the matter;

(5) If there was one Committee it will streamline the information proc-esses;

(6) A large number of the Club processes and activities are handled by sub-committees and there would be little change made to the sub-committee structure.

(7) A number of Clubs already operate with one Committee/Board which does not appear to affect their performance.

Members should be aware that there have been a number of changes over the years, particularly legislative changes, that affect the way that Clubs now operate and this Club is now required to be operated as a corporate business that is responsible for managing a substantial finan-cial turnover and assets.

Issues There are a number of issues still to be considered and resolved before the

Club can finalise changes to the Club’s Constitution required to change the structure of the HRBC Board and the election process for the Mem-bers of the Board. The HRBC Board will not rush decisions on these matters and will seek feedback from Members regarding these issues and Constitutional changes that will be required.

11

We were saddened by the passing of Margaret Eklund . She was a life member loved by everyone and sadly missed.

We hope Velia McLean and Mal Wordsworth's operations went well and both are on the road to recovery. We wish all members a healthy, happy and safe Xmas and best wishes for 2016

Transition Process When all matters relating to the Club’s restructure are resolved then a Special

General Meeting will be called at which the matters and any relevant Constitutional changes that are required will be put to the Members for approval. Any changes to the Club’s structure will require Constitu-tional change which requires the passing of a Special Resolution by Members at a General Meeting.

If the changes to the Club structure and Constitution are approved at the Spe-

cial General Meeting then a joint HRBC and Bowls AGM will be held in May at which the Members of the HRBC Management Board will be elected.

Summary There has been a lot of work go into the consideration of the appropriate

Club structure and there is more work that is still to be carried out be-fore the process is completed. The HRBC Board and Bowls Commit-tees are aware of the enormity and the importance of this task and that Members need to be kept informed regarding the process. If Members feel that further information is required to clarify issues then they should contact one of the members of the HRBC Board.
