School website: www.garfield.enfield.sch.uk Headteachers Message It is hard to believe that a half term has gone by and I want to say again, how much I miss all our wonderful pupils, staff and parents. I hope we will see you soon when it is safe for us to return. I have sent an important letter today explaining that Garfield is not re-opening to more pupils on June 1st. We will continue to provide the emergency care provision for key workers’ children. It certainly has been an unusual half term and I would like to say a big thank you to all our school community for your amazing effort, resilience and support. We will get through this by continuing to help each other. It is half term next week and so we will not be setting any home learning. Have a restful break everyone. Message Board From Staff

This week, I (Ms Pericleous) had a 'virtual cook-off' with my brother. We used the same recipe for a Middle Eastern dish called 'Shakshuka'. The dish is perfect for a late brunch, lunch or dinner and is best served with warm bread. It is also very healthy and does not have any meat or fish in it.

Check out the recipe and method on http://www.bbc.co.uk/food - Shakshuka

Here are the pictures of our individual dishes, you can decide which one looks the best as I can assure you they tasted amazing!

Let us know if you take part in any 'virtual cook offs' with your family or friends and send us your pictures!

How to Make Salt Dough

•1 cupful of plain flour (about 250g) •half a cupful of table salt (about 125g) •half a cupful of water (about 125ml)

Method I had a go at making some of these…. 1. Preheat the oven to its lowest setting and line a baking sheet with baking parchment. 2. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the water and stir until it comes together into a ball. 3. Transfer the dough to a floured work surface and shape into your chosen model. You can roll it out and cut out shapes, numbers or letters using biscuit cutters, or make any kind of model you can think of. 4. Put your finished items on the lined baking sheet and bake for 3 hrs or until solid. 5. Leave to cool and then paint. You could also use felt pens to colour. I bet you could all do a better job! Have fun! Mrs Hendriksen

LOVE IS LIKE A PATCHWORK QUILT

Once upon a time there was a little girl called Sheraiya. She lived in a beautiful little town called St Mary's, in a country called Jamaica, which was in the Caribbean. Sheraiya was 11 years old and lived in a small, modest house with her grandmother Mavis, her mummy and her big brother Aiden. When they were together, she got on well with Aiden, but most days he was off, out at the beach with his friends, which was close to where they lived. Sheraiya enjoyed spending her evenings sitting on the rocking chair, on the porch, outside the house; her grandmother Mavis and her mummy would sit there with her. Sheraiya's grandmother would tell them stories about when she was a little girl and those stories used to bring Sheraiya many feelings: comfort, joy, sometimes sadness, but mostly happiness and love as they were filled with her grandma's experiences as a child and Sheraiya treasured her grandmother very much. At the end of her stories, Sheraiya's mummy would always look over to Sheraiya and wink her eye at her and smile because she too enjoyed those stories. One evening Sheraiya's grandma sat sewing some pieces of square colourful fabric together. Sheraiya watched as her grandma sewed pieces of material from her favourite dress on to some of the square fabric. "Grandma, what are you making and why have you cut up your favourite dress?" Sheraiya asked her grandmother curiously. Sheraiya's grandmother stopped sewing for a moment, looked up at Sheraiya and began to explain. "Sheraiya, my darling, I'm making you a patchwork quilt - you see the evenings are getting colder, so this will keep you warm at night and also patchwork quilts are very special, just like you my darling.” Sheraiya felt great warmth from her grandmother's words. "Why are patchwork quilts so special?" Sheraiya asked her grandmother. "Well, my sweetheart, many years ago some women use to make these quilts for soldiers to use when there were away on their journeys and the soldiers often spoke of how they would wrap themselves in these quilts to keep warm and it comforted them and made them think of memories of home. The pieces from my favourite dress that I’m sewing into your quilt will, I hope, bring you comfort, when needed. It will also help you remember special memories of our time together. You see love is like a patchwork quilt; the feeling of love can bring warmth in your heart and the love you feel for your family, friends, animals, nature and all the special moments and memories you hold dear to you are all woven together into the quilt. These feelings will be kept safe within you and will always surround you, just like this precious quilt will, whenever you need it." Sheraiya suddenly felt a warmth surround her; she smiled at her grandmother, stood up from her chair and gave her grandma a big hug. "Thank you, grandma." Sheraiya caught a glimpse of her mummy, who gave her a wink, and smiled as she always did at the end of grandma's stories. A few weeks later, Sheraiya's grandma had finally finished her patchwork quilt and had placed it lovingly on Sheraiya's bed. That evening, Sheraiya went to her room and saw the quilt on her bed. Softly, she sat down on it and as looked at all the wonderful pieces of fabric that had all been sewn together, including pieces of her treasured grandma's favourite dress, it made Sheraiya feel so happy. With care, she wrapped the quilt around her, feeling its warmth and comfort. Suddenly, she remembered her grandma's words and whispered to herself,

"Love is like a patchwork quilt".

The End
