MCCOOK WOMAN DIES IN COLLISION A 33-year-old McCook woman died in a collision about 7 a.m. Thursday on U.S. Highway 83, about five miles south of Lake Maloney. Stephanie Budke, 33, was driving a sedan that crossed the center line and struck a semitrailer truck head-on, according to the Nebraska State Patrol. Budke was the only person in the car. According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the northbound car had crossed into the southbound lane to pass another vehi- cle. The weather at the time was extremely foggy; witnesses believed the accident was fog-related. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors, the Sheriff’s Office said. The semi driver was Sohi Nahar Singh, 65, of Ba- kersfield, California, according to the patrol. Neither Singh nor a passenger in the semi was injured, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, which also responded to the crash. Singh was wearing a seat belt, accord- ing to the patrol. It was unknown whether Budke was wearing a seat belt. In addition to sheriff’s deputies and patrol troopers, first responders from North Platte Rescue and Frontier County Rescue responded to the wreck. The wreck happened near the Nu Star Energy pipeline plant near mile marker 69. The collision completely blocked the highway, according to the Sheriff’s Office. SPORTS The McCook Lady Bison golfers kicked off their season with a quad

yesterday in Cambridge. No team scores were kept. Kaylee

Puckett led the MHS girls with a round of 49. Hannah Goltl was

next with a score of 52 and Brooke Stewart 58. The Lady Bison

travel to Sidney on Monday. The Lady Bison softball team will

travel to Gothenburg for their season opening games later today.

The Bison boys tennis team will host their Red/White scrimmage

at the Bison Tennis Courts today.

The McCook Community College volleyball team overcame a slight

case of opening-night jitters in the first set of the season but went

on to sweep Garden City Community College Thursday night 27-

25, 25-15 and, 25-18 in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

The Lady Indians came out strong in the first set to take a com-

fortable lead, but stalled just enough to let the Broncbusters back

into the set. "I think that just goes back to how young we are

(four sophomores and 10 freshmen) -- and I may be saying that all

season -- but it does take time for the girls to be able to work

together as a team," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. The Lady

Indians will see some familiar and motivated foes in the Mid-

Plains Subway Invite in North Platte. The Lady Indians will start

the day Friday with a 3 p.m. game with Eastern Wyoming then

take on Durham College at 7 p.m. On Saturday, MCC plays Hesston

College (Kan.) at 10 a.m. and Garden City at 2 p.m. Durham Col-

lege of Oshawa, Ontario has been in McCook since Sunday for

preseason training and a cultural exchange with the MCC volley-

ball team. The Lords played Western Nebraska in the early game

Thursday at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center and lost in

three sets 25-20, 25-14, 25-19.
