REGULAR COLLECTION: $ 15,624.75 BUILDING FUND: $2,053.79

In today’s First Reading, God provides a weary and distressed prophet Elijah with physical food and drink to sustain him on his pilgrimage to Mt. Horeb. In St. John’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims He is the spiritual Bread of Life; those who eat this bread will live forever. As we partake of the Lord’s consecrated Body and Blood, we become one in discipleship with Him. St. Paul teaches us to follow the way of love through Christ. On our journey to eternal life, our Lord gives us grace to live good Christian lives by making stewardship a way of life.

I am a sucker for it every time. It is foolproof. It doesn’t matter if I see it at a baseball game, football or Jeopardy. If I see the contestant do it, they got me. I am on their side. Monday afternoon, I’ m watching the Olympics, Women’s Steeplechase. Never watched it before and not even sure what a steeple chase is. It resembles a fox hunt- the hounds and horses chasing their prey as they leap over the hurdles and splash in the water. It was nearing the end of the race. Yuliya Zaripova leaps over the last hurdle ignores the puddle and breaks from the pack to easily capture the gold. Good for her. Wait. Her victory celebration awaits. There is no moonwalk, no

gyrations, no dancing or finger pointing. She makes the sign of the cross, not once but three times and in the opposite direction. She must be Orthodox. I am now her fan. She is Russian. I don’t cheer for the Russians. It is a hangover from the Cold War and besides I still have bitter feelings from that 1972 basketball game when the officials gave them our gold medal. I put those feelings aside. She made the sign of the cross and she did it before millions of viewers. It may not be as flashy as tebowing but it works for me. Maybe because she is Russian makes it even more significant. After all those years of communism, of forced atheism, persecution, the faith didn’t expire. The government could not snuff it out. Ms. Zaripova witnessed that to the millions of viewers. More important than her gold medal, she is a believer. I get discouraged. Churches aren’t crowded. Atheism is on the rise. There is an indifference to the faith. I fear what it will be like 20 years from now. Who knows? But there will be faith. People will believe. People will profess and stand up for their faith. We don’t need a majority. We just need a single individual willingly to stand up for their beliefs. It speaks volumes. Maybe that one person will be you.

Love, Fr Tom
