Seminar- and Supporting Program Friday, 28 October 2016 hotel, seminar room Beethoven 1, 1.00 p.m.– 4.30 p.m. Seminar 1: Landscape photography with Hans Strand Facilitator: Hans Strand This seminar will be held in English. This year we proudly present Hans Strand as a seminar facilitator, one of the world‘s leading landscape photographers of our time. For years the intense as well as sophisticated and poetic landscape images of the Has- selblad Masters Award winner have been among the best that is currently available in this line of work. In this compressed seminar held in Lünen for the first time, Hans Strand will talk about his approach to photography and address the important topic of image composition. To round off the entire creative process, he will also share his image editing strategies with you. There will of course be room to pose your own questions during the seminar. Don‘t miss the chance to learn from a renowned master of the trade and soak up inspiration and motivation for your own projects. Hans Strand was born in 1955 in Marmaverken, Sweden. After a nine-year career in mecha- nical engineering, he decided to go for a dramatic change and devote his life to landscape photography, which until then had been his long held hobby and great passion. It is a change he has never regretted. Hans has always felt himself drawn to the untamed and unmanipu- lated that he finds in Nature. As Hans always says: „The wilderness is the mother of all living things. It is always true and never trivial“. Over the years he has made the entire world his workplace, photographing everything from the vast expanses of the Arctic to steaming rain- forests and dry deserts. His work has been displayed in numerous exhibitions and published in many international photography magazines. He has also received several awards for his photography. Among the most important ones is the Hasselblad Master Award in 2008. He has published 7 books with landscape photographs. The two latest ones are ICELAND Above & Below and INTIMATE I. www.hansstrand.com hotel, seminar room Beethoven 2, 9.30 a.m – 3:30 p.m. Seminar 2: Of first ideas, central themes and an accidental encounter with a white rabbit Facilitator: Robert Mertens This seminar will be held in German. Photography and creativity belong together like desert and sand, like the oceans and tides or like rabbits and eggs - this last one at Easter at least. One without the other: absolutely unthinkable. Creativity in an image is usually easy to spot, perceptible through a particular idea, the central theme of the pictorial language or a highly imaginative visualisation on behalf of the photogra- pher. But how are we going to find our very own creative language in photography? For it is not on sale in a value pack! The good news is: every one of us can be creative, and we can nurture and strengthen this skill. The bad news is: without a lot of training it is usually very difficult.

But watch out: this class will invite for change, ask many questions and prompt unexpected effects. So be prepared and bring plenty of curiosity. I look forward to seeing you. Note: This workshop is not entirely focused on nature photography, but talks about creativity and pictorial language in more general terms.

Robert Mertens, photography artist, author of specialist books and photography trainer, has been taking photographs since his early childhood. After his training in product and advertise-ment photography he joined the legendary Manfred Rieker Studio as an assistant photographer.
