As well as giving them an opportunity to tour the school and to catch up with each other, they were able to meet students from Years 11 and 12 both to inspire them and to offer practical advice and support, including the offer of work experience. This is our first event of this kind and we hope that it will be the start of a new relationship with our former students who we firmly believe can offer so much to our current students. Mrs St John and Ms Saul have worked very hard to begin the work of establishing our alumnae network and, if you have daughters or friends who have left the school and would like to be on our contact list, please do email either of them with their contact details and we will ensure they receive invitations to future events. We were delighted to welcome parents of Years 8 and 9 to our Options Evening on Thursday. We have made the decision to extend Key Stage 4 into Year 9 next year as a result of the rigour and expectations of the new GCSE curriculum which the current Year 8 will be following. As a result, it was a very busy night. All information is available on our website and all students, and parents if you wish to join them, will be engaging in options meetings to discuss their choices in detail. On a less positive note, can I reiterate once again my plea that parents do not use Whitehorse Drive between 8 and 8.30am and between 3 and 3.30pm to drop off and collect your daughter. There was a serious collision this week and whilst nobody was hurt, the damage to the parked vehicle was significant. I am very worried that next time, a child could be injured. Please drop your daughter on Dorking Road, at the bottom of the Cabbage Patch or Ebbisham Road if you drive your daughter to school. You will find information in this newsletter about the National Citizen Service programme, which offers the opportunity for students between 15 and 17 to participate in a month-long programme of outdoor adventure, university taster weeks and a period of voluntary work. We are a flagship school for this programme, as so many of our students sign up each year. Currently 86 Year 11s have joined the programme for this summer. I am also very pleased that we are going to be carrying out a collection for the local Food Bank at the end of this term. Several of our students are currently volunteering for this, as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award, and have been very moved by the work of this organisation. Please see the information later in this newsletter regarding collection times and items that we would love to receive from you so that we can support the great, and sadly very necessary, work of this organisation. Finally, a huge thanks to all of you who came to the Quiz Night last Friday. The event raised over £1000 which is a terrific return for all the hard work of the PSA who organised it and to those of you who supported the event. Have a lovely weekend. Ros Allen @RoseberyHT

Do you want the opportunity of a lifetime?

Rosebery Students have the opportunity to take

part in National Citizen Service (NCS) this

summer.

NCS is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity for students ages

15-17 and is a great chance to meet new people, develop

new skills and boost your CV or UCAS application.

Students will take part in challenging outdoor activities,

engage with your local community and create your own

social action campaign. Each NCS place is valued at

over £1300 but, thanks to government support, we only

ask for a £50 administration fee with financial support

available, if needed.

Find out more about the NCS programme here or to

make sure you don’t miss out by booking your space now

online at www.ncsthechallenge.org

The National Citizen Service provides opportunities for young people to participate in local and national projects. Last half term, representatives challenged our Year 11 tutor groups to participate in a presentation on a social action project of their choice – about something that is relevant to them. All our Year 11 tutor groups took part and there was an amazing ‘Apprentice’ style presentation event on Tuesday 1 March, adjudicated by two members of the NCS. Their deliberations took over 24 hours, such was the quality of the presentations and the passion with which each group spoke. Subject matter ranged from self-esteem to gender equality to outrage about the taxation on female sanitary products! Prizes were donated by the NCS and, additionally, the winning teams will be able to make a donation to a local charity of their choice.

The results were as follows: 1st - 11RX: Self-image project, 2nd - 11EX: Mental health awareness, 3rd - 11DY: Gender equality matters. Students in the winning team were: Hayley Lewis, Faye Rainger, Shelley Chuicharoen, Demi Clarke, Bethany Chapman and Gloria Marchant. (Pictured left and below). They commented that they had enjoyed the experience because “we liked the way that we could work in a team on something that we felt strongly about;

that it was different from our GCSE studies and great to work on different presentation styles.” Well done to everyone who got involved in the tutor group debates that led to the chosen entry and to all who participated in the Presentation event. Mrs M Evans Personal Development Leader/Drama and PE Departments.

The Swimathon Cheque Presentation

The cheque presentation to the Rotary Club of Sutton Nonsuch took place last

Friday. The picture (right) shows Rebecca Gibbs, Year 7, talking to us about her

nominated charity which was drawn from 'the hat' to receive 25% of the

proceeds from the 2015 Swimathon. Her chosen charity is the Juvenile Diabetes

Research Foundation and, as Rebecca said, “I chose this charity because my

brother has Type 1 diabetes and I want to try to do something to make a

difference.”

The Swimathon event is organised by the Rotary Club of Sutton Nonsuch and we

split the voluntary donations 50/50 with them. This year, we raised over £1625

which was a fantastic achievement for the 42 swimmers plus Mrs Evans and

Mrs Brundish, who also swam! Some of our students raised over £100 each and

their charities will also benefit. They are Smile Train (Miral Pankhania Year 10),

Dame Vera Lynn Children's charity (Isabelle Jobsz Year 9) and Macmillan (Elena

Belisario Year 7). Thanks also to Mrs Janes, Mrs Fennell and the House Leaders

for their support on the day, back in November 2015.

We have been participating since its inception in 2000, when Mrs Evans and three

Rosebery students joined in. This was our sixteenth year of participation and we

have raised thousands of pounds for many different charities. This year, the

Rotarians presented Mrs Evans with a beautiful floral arrangement to mark her

commitment to the event and for encouraging Rosebery girls to think of others

before themselves. This year's Swimathon 2016 will take place in November.

Date to be confirmed. Watch this space!

Rosebery School to grow seeds from space!

Students at Rosebery School are preparing to become space biologists and embark on a voyage of discovery by growing seeds that have been into space. In September, 2kg of rocket seeds were flown to the International Space Station (ISS) on Soyuz 44S where they spent several months in microgravity before returning to Earth in March 2016. The seeds have been sent as part of Rocket Science, an educational project launched by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and the UK Space Agency. Rosebery will be one of the schools to receive a packet of 100 seeds from space, which they will grow alongside seeds that haven’t been to space and measure the differences over seven weeks. The students won’t know which seed packet contains which seeds until all results have been collected by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and analysed by professional biostatisticians. The out-of-this-world, nationwide science experiment will enable the students to think more about how we could preserve human life on another planet in the future, what astronauts need to survive long-term missions in space and the difficulties surrounding growing fresh food in challenging climates. Mrs Keaveney says: “We are very excited to be taking part in Rocket Science. This experiment is a fantastic way of teaching our students to think more scientifically and share their findings with the whole school. The experiment is going to be undertaken by students from our school gardening club run by Mrs Pledge.” Rocket Science is just one educational project from a programme developed by the UK Space Agency to celebrate British ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s Principia mission to the ISS and inspire young people to look into careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects, including horticulture.

Careers Evening Tuesday 15 March 2016, 6.00pm – 8.00pm The Royal Horticultural Society will be one of the many exhibitors at the Careers Evening next Tuesday raising awareness of the many career opportunities across a variety of industry sectors. We do hope that you will be able to join us.

Mrs Keaveney

STOP PRESS! Four Rosebery Students are to exhibit at the NEC Birmingham next

week in recognition of their team’s success in different STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, Maths) projects. Only five schools in the UK have qualified to exhibit so

this is a remarkable opportunity for these students and for Rosebery!

On Monday 7 March, the Year 12 Music students performed their recitals in the hall to friends and family. It was a

varied programme including music by Bach, Handel, Saint-Saens, Rachmaninov and James Rae.

All students rose to occasion and performed very well under pressure. A big thank you to those who came to support

on the night, to the instrumental teachers for preparing the students for their performances, and to Mrs Anstis,
