Frida to Frieda

• In 1922 Frida decides to change the spelling of her name from the German Frida to Frieda and she proudly claims to be born in 1910, which is the year the Mexican Revolution began. The only reason she changed her birth date was to make herself younger, which caused lots of confusion on her life and art.

Frida’s Bus Accident

• On September 17, 1925 Frida suffers a terrible bus accident that leaves her with multiple injuries, a broken pelvic bone, spinal column and other sever injuries that make the doctors doubt whether shell survive. After this she spends several months recovering from and accident that would leave her mark for life, because in 1926 she finds out that she would never be able to have children do to her injuries.

This is one of the four paintings she took to show Diego in 1928.(1926 Self Portrait in a Velvet Dress)

Frida asked Diego if she had talent and Diego replied with a yes. Than they started to get to know each other better and from their on emerged a romance.

Frida’s Marriage

• On August 21, 1929 in a civil ceremony in the town hall of Coyoacan, Mexico, Frida became Diego’s third wife. AT this time Diego was 42 and Frida was 22 years old. Frida’s mom was against the marriage do to the fact that Diego was to old and fat. Some of her friends were even shocked about her choice and other saw it as a way for her to become a better artist.

1931 Frida and Diego Rivera

She painted this portrait to represent her marriage with Diego, while they were leaving in San Francisco. When the painting was finish the newspaper read valuable only because it was painted by the wife of Diego.

While in San Francisco she was hospitalized in 1931, do to a persistent pain in her right leg their she met Dr. Eloesser, a well known surgeon and a friend of Diego’s since 1926. From here on he became Frida’s personal friend and most trusted medical advisor for the rest of her life.

Frida Kahlo’s Misscarriage

• On July 4, 1932 Frida’s second pregnancy ends in miscarriage at Henry Ford Hospital. After that she spends the next 13 days recovering at the hospital. Than at the age of 56 Frida’s mom passed away on September 15, 1932.

Frida’s Suffering

• In 1944 when Frida painted this Painting her health had gone so bad that she had to wear a steel corset for five months. She painted this to show all the paint she had gone thru ever since her accident. This painting represented all the pain she was going thru by wearing the steel corset. That’s why here she decided not to include any animals, because her life was miserable.
