Ths Army Family Readiness Group Leaders Handbook s desgned to be used by Famly Readness Group (FRG) leaders n the actve, Guard, and Reserve Components. The handbook provdes updated nformaton regardng FRGs. A battalon commander/Rear Detachment Commander (RDC) oversees and supports all company FRGs drectly and ndrectly through company level commanders and a battalon FRG steerng commttee. When there s a battalon FRG, then the battalon commander/RDC works wth the battalon FRG leader n the same manner as descrbed above. However, f the Battalon commander chooses to have a sngle FRG for the battalon, the next hgher level commander shall establsh the advsory steerng commttee for the brgades FRGs. Ths handbook ncorporates the gudance provded n AR 608-1, Appendx J, Army Famly Readness Group Operatons and provdes nformaton and tps on how to run FRGs based on lessons learned and nput from the field. Several significant changes are occurring that impact how FRGs need to operate today and in the upcoming years. It is no longer sufficient for FRGs to operate only during and/or for the purposes of deployment. FRGs are being called upon to play a more expansive role in family readiness and in assisting units and families of an Expeditionary Army.

Expeditionary Army and 21st Century EnvironmentThe mltary force s beng employed n many dfferent ways due to global nsecurty, the Global War on Terrorsm (GWOT), and natural dsasters. To meet the large demands, mltary mssons nvolve all components (.e., actve, Guard, and Reserve) of the force. As a result, Solders are experencng more deployments and a wder array of mssons. To address the demands on the force, the Army s reorganzng to an expedtonary force comprsed of modular unts (see the next secton on Brgade Combat Teams). In other words, unts are configured n dfferent ways when the force deploys. As a more flexble, rapdly deployable force, the Army can respond more effectvely to the unpredctable nature of deployments and hgh operatng tempo (OPTEMPO) demands.

What does ths mean for FRGs? It means a hgh level of preparedness s requred. Establshng the capablty to respond and adapt to unforeseen stuatons that arse quckly s also needed. For an FRG to work effectvely and support famles under these condtons, several actons are crtcally mportant: plannng and preparaton mantanng the nfrastructure of the FRG and level of operaton so the FRG can respond quckly to ncreased demands for nformaton and support attendng to the welfare of all FRG volunteers and takng other steps to sustan the FRG so the FRG can meet ongong demands for hgh levels of support coordnatng wth others to ensure all famles are reached and supported regardless of geographcal locaton revsng FRG procedures and makng other changes needed based on lessons learned.Operating the FRG on an ongoing basis is necessary to support units and families in todays environment
