Page 2: @FreshStartFoodsCanada Milton HQ: 1-800-563-5033 Ottawa ... · APPLES –We are beginning ... watercress quality and availability is good. • APPLES Demand is up as most of the schools

• GREEN ONIONS The green onion supply continues to be plentiful. Quebec green onion production is good Supplies are easily meeting demand with very nice quality.

• CUCUMBERS EAST - Supply and quality is good. WEST - Demand is currently exceeding supplies on both retail and foodservice quality.

• BROCCOLI Broccoli supplies are plentiful as the recent warm weather has brought fields forward the last couple of weeks. Quality is fair.

• POTATOES Markets remain active with heavy demand and low volume. Late August expected to see improving production with new crop starting. Ontario has started with red and whites, with yellow to get going over the next 7-10 days

• ONIONS Super colossal and colossal yellow onions are limited from the new crop in the Northwest. Ontario red onions will start next week.

• LIMESThe lime market will remains relatively firm while demand exceeds supplies on 175ct and larger. The new crop will peak on small sizes, beginning with 250/230’s.

• LETTUCES ICEBERG -Iceberg lettuce yields are lower overall and demand has increased with school business coming back into play this week. Demand has picked up on the value-added side as well as carton lettuce business. Quebec iceberg lettuce continues with good supplies and heavy demand. The primary pack from Quebec is 24ct cello wrapped. Quality remains very good.ROMAINE / LEAF - The romaine market is active. Suppliers are in a planting gap that should last seven to ten days. Romaine hearts will be light in availability through-out this week. Supplies of red and green leaf lettuces are stable with promotable volume available this week. Quebec green leaf, red leaf and romaine continue with good volume and strong demand. SPRING MIX, SPINACH & BABY KALEBaby leaf supplies are plentiful. Spinach, spring mix leaves and baby kale have good supplies. ROCKET ARUGULA / WATERCRESSArugula supplies are very good with outstanding quality. Supply of baby red kale will not be available for the foreseeable future. Bunched watercress quality and availability is good.

• APPLESDemand is up as most of the schools are back in session. Growers are requesting flexibility on subbing sizes/grades/varieties—especially on smaller, foodservice sizes (113ct, 125ct, and 138ct).

• BRUSSELS SPROUTS Internal decay is also causing lower yields. Ontario will start in mid- September and run through November.

• CELERY As school business has picked up, this has made this commodity more active in the marketplace, compared to past weeks.

• CORNVolume is limited. Ontario and Quebec are going strong as they switch from early varieties to the later ones. Supplies will be plentiful until October, but pricing is expected to remain elevated.

• AVOCADOSSizing will remain steady with limited availability on sizes 14’s and larger. The market will remain strong for the month of September until Chile can provide some relief.

• GOLD PINEAPPLES Pineapple supplies will continue be tight through mid-September.

• MELONCANTALOUPES - As for small fruit, we are seeing good supplies at the start of the week but will tighten up going into the weekend. Brix levels are ranging from 10%-13% with great internal and external quality.HONEYDEWS - There is good volume on large fruit with plenty of opportunity buys available. There are good offerings on small fruit in the front part of this week but will tighten up going into the weekend. Excellent quality internally and externally.

• TOMATOES EAST - Mature green tomato yields in the east are collectively just moderate. WEST - Triple digit temperatures have produced quality issues and directly affecting the shelf life of tomatoes both in house and in transit.

• STONE FRUITLimited supply on small fruit—especially on 70ct. Yellow nectarines and white flesh supplies are restricted as overall pack-outs continue to come up short. Again, small supplies are non-existent due to larger sizing in the pack-outs.

= Local options available

• ASPARAGUSAvailability on asparagus continues to be expensive and limited. The industry is hoping to see some relief in early September.

• CAULIFLOWER Cauliflower supplies are plentiful as fields have come forward and yields have improved.

• MANGOESSizing has shifted towards the larger sizes as we get into the tail end of the season. The market on small fruit has climbed due to limited availability. Cost of the fruit has been increasing at the field level and this has made the market strengthen since last week.

• PEARSNew crop, Washington Bartlett pears are now available while storage Anjou pears are winding down. We should see new crop red pears become available late next week or the first week of September with light volume.

• SEA ASPARAGUS - From BC• ** NEW ** MORELS - From BC• BEARS TOOTH / LIONS MANE - From BC• GOLDEN CHANTERELLE - From Saskatchewan• PINE MUSHROOMS- From BC• LOBSTER MUSHROOM - From BC• SUMMER TRUFFLES - From Spain• CHANTERELLE - From Cape Bretton or BC• **COMING SOON** Cauliflower from BC

• EGGPLANT EAST - Demand is slow on eggplant this time of year but pricing remains steady with light supply.WEST - Light supplies of eggplant are available.Quality is currently fair on retail grade,

• PEPPERS EAST - Pepper availability is plentiful and quality is strong.WEST - Moderate and good supplies of serrano, green, red and jalapeños.

• CITRUS - LEMONSWe’ll have another good week on lemon supplies, with the majority being offshore fruit. Market prices on small size fruit continue to soften up on both choice and fancy fruit

• BEANSBean supplies continue to improve, but are still somewhat tight. Snipped bean supplies are tight and are being pro-rated with good quality and triggered pricing.

• WATERMELON Local seedless continue with fairly good supply, especially on the large sizes, but with good demand from the US, prices are higher than last season. Yellow flesh watermelons are in good supply.

• ORANGES Valencia supplies are very limited on the small sizes 113’s & 138’s. With schools back in session, growers are experiencing a high demand for the small fruit.

• BERRIES BLUEBERRIESBlueberries continue to tighten up in the Pacific Northwest. British Columbia fruit is a mix of both good quality varieties and fair quality varieties.RASPBERRIESRaspberries are in better supplies this week.BLACKBERRIESBlackberries are in better supplies to meet the demands.STRAWBERRIESStrawberries remain in relatively light supply as we see the decline in plant production which is normal for this time of year.

• ZUCCHINI EAST - Zucchini supply is very good from various shipping points in the east. Demand has been good.WEST - Good supplies are expected to continue on both through the week.
