Okay, ladies... let’s talk give-away! In keeping with our travel theme for this issue of Fresh Vancouver, we are giving away a trip for two to the award-winning Sparkling Hill Resort in Vernon, BC! We love giving away amazing prizes, as you’ll know if you’ve ever visited

our Facebook page... but this is definitely our best yet! If you’re not familiar with the Sparkling Hill Resort, get a load of this: the resort opened in

May 2010 at a cost of $122,000,000. Carved into a granite cliff above Lake Okanagan, the stun-ning architecture gleams with 3.5 million Swarovski crystals, reflecting the beauty of both water and light. Envisioned and built by the patriarch of the Swarovski family, the resort is designed to bring the European approach to wellness to us here in Canada. See page 46 to find out how you can win this luxurious prize!

The image of travel has never looked as glamorous as it does on this issue’s cover story with Claire Newell, president of Travel Best Bets by Jubilee Tours and Travel. Claire’s elegance and so-phistication combined with her jet-setting lifestyle might make her seem out of reach; yet Claire is a hard-working mother of two with the same struggles and concerns as the rest of us. Her insights on travel, “voluntourism,” beauty and self-actualization should not be missed.

As we head into the holiday season, let’s take time to focus on our skincare and our inner and outer wellness before the madness of the season hits. Stress is bad for our health, our skin and our relationships, but by taking care of ourselves, we can be in the moment and enjoy time with family and friends. Feeling great begins within!

It was pure serendipity that our Fresh Vancouver travel issue coincided with my own recent travels. Fittingly, much of this issue was written or edited in Paris, London and Amsterdam. After interviewing the fabu-

lous and successful (and need I say stunning?) Claire Newell of Travel Best Bets, my travel bug was as agitated as it has ever been. I absolutely love to travel, and it had been a number of years since I’d fed that hungry bug.

My trip was a wonderful reminder of our need to explore the world outside the parameters of our daily lives. It was also an incredible opportu-nity to enjoy some time with my husband. How many years slide by without taking that time to reconnect? As we admired the sophistication of London, the exquisite polish of Paris, and the old-world charm (and seedy under-belly) of Amsterdam, I was reminded once again that travel feeds us in so many ways.

This special issue of Fresh is designed to inspire and motivate. With recipes from around the globe, our jet-setting fashion spread, and of course our feature interview with Claire Newell, this issue will be sure to get your own travel bug twitching! Claire’s new travel book (More Best Bets) and new TV show (Operation: Vacation) will both be out in a few months to give you even more ideas. And if you’re the luckiest woman in the city, you just might be the winner of our “Girlfriend’s Getaway” trip for two to the Swarovski crystal -infused Sparkling Hill Resort!

What do we love as much as travel? Makeovers! This issue is also filled with articles to help you make over your wardrobe, your skin, your exercise program and more. Time to get rid of summer sun damage and start prep-ping for all those upcoming holiday parties. Like it or not, ‘tis almost the season!

At some point, the mirror betrays you. It shakes your sense of youth with the first noticeable signs of aging – little wrinkles around the eyes, sun spots and some sagging skin. There used to be only a few options for turning back the clock without going under the knife. But today, an emerging trend in anti-aging combines facial procedures with natural approaches to soften the signs of aging.

Your Anti-Aging PlAnIn your twenties and thirties, the face still has an ample amount of natural fullness since the underlying structures have yet to be affected by any significant aging process. Despite the fullness, you will notice the very first lines and wrinkles around the eyes, as well as slight bags and dark circles under the eyes. The key is doing smaller procedures for enhancement and prevention, while focusing attention on the practice of proper diet and lifestyle habits to maintain a youthful look. This approach helps sidestep more extensive procedures later on.

MAintAining Youthful EYEsThe delicate eye area can be one of the first places to reveal signs of aging such as lines, wrinkles, under-eye bags and dark circles. The following treat-ments and natural approaches will help stave off the appearance of aging in this area.

Avoiding AgE sPotsDark brown pigmentations known as age spots become noticeable on the face, arms and hands. Years of prolonged sun exposure without adequate protection will result in these unsightly spots. Monitor your age spots for asymmetry, border, colour, diameter and evolving size, shape or symp-toms. If you notice any changes, inform your doctor immediately to rule out skin cancer.

Hair removal is a time-consuming daily routine for many people. While tradi-tional methods such as waxing, tweez-

ing and shaving are effective for removing the hair, they do not provide long-term solutions for hair removal – never mind all those bumps, nicks and ingrown hairs! Over a decade ago, technological advancements led to the creation of a hair removal system that not only eliminat-ed these annoying problems, but also provided a long-term hair reduction solution: laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal is one of the fastest-growing methods of ridding the body of un-wanted hair. The appeal of laser hair removal stems from its effectiveness, efficiency and convenience. It can be performed virtually anywhere on the body where you experience unwanted hair growth. Another reason for its popularity is that laser hair removal can result in permanent reduction of the hair. It is, how-ever, important for consumers to understand exactly what permanent hair reduction means in the laser hair removal industry. It does not mean 100 percent reduction for the rest of your life, but rather 50 to 95 percent reduction. New hair may appear over time, but in most cases it is finer, easier to manage hair. Of course, tar-get treatments can always be performed later to remove these finer hairs. When searching for a clinic, there is no need to pay the highest price, though it is important to find a clinic that has quality equipment and experienced laser technicians.

The top 5 Benefits of laser hair removalChoosing laser hair removal over other tech-niques has many advantages. Below are the top five reasons why you may want to consider this treatment for yourself.

1. treatments are quick. Laser hair removal treatments are quick-er than you might expect. For example, it only takes 20 minutes to perform a treatment on the underarm and Brazil-ian area.

2. You will save money in the long run. With the permanent reduction of hair, you no longer need to purchase end-

less razors, shaving cream, depilatory creams, and you will no longer need to have monthly waxing appoint-ments. The cost of laser hair removal has decreased as the cost of waxing has increased. The results are far superior to waxing and the cost, over time, is much less.

3. You can eliminate and prevent in-grown hairs. Laser hair removal is simply the best option and the only solution to prevent and eliminate ingrown hairs. It is also a great option for those who have sensitive skin and experience skin irritation from shaving and waxing.

4. You will save time. Laser hair removal eliminates the need to shave daily. Add that up over a life-time and just think how many weeks you spend with a razor in hand!

5. no need to grow hair between treatments. Unlike waxing, you can shave between treatments. Say goodbye to the days of having to grow your hair out; with laser hair removal, you can shave as much as you like between sessions.

The benefits of laser versus other forms of hair removal are abundantly clear. As the costs of treatment decrease, we no longer need to de-liberate the pros and cons of this solution.

Common Questions Now you understand the benefits of laser hair removal. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t have more questions! Below are the most com-mon questions clients ask about the procedure.

how many sessions will i need?Every body part has a different hair growth cycle and the time of the growth cycles can vary from four to 12 weeks depending on the area. After a couple of treatments, clients typically experience a significant reduction in hair along with an overall slower growth pattern. You can expect to see an average of 10 to 15 percent hair reduction after each session and an aver-age of eight sessions are required for maximum hair reduction. It is important to keep in mind

that the number of sessions you will need de-pends on many factors, including areas of the body being treated, skin colour, coarseness of hair, sex, hormones and any underlying health conditions.

how does it work?Laser and IPL systems use energy in the form of light to denature the blood supply to the hair follicle. The energy from the light source is ab-sorbed by the pigment, called melanin, which gives hair its colour. The hair rapidly absorbs this filtered light and transfers it to the sur-rounding cells, which in turn convert it into heat. This heating denatures the cells, render-ing them incapable of producing further hair growth. Your pre-treatment consultation begins with a health history questionnaire, followed by a patch test to choose the correct settings ac-cording to your skin colour and hair type. The treated hair will fall out after two weeks as the epidermis renews itself. Some hairs may fall out during the treatment as well.

how do i choose the right clinic? The most important thing to look for is a clinic that offers a complimentary consultation and patch test. This gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you have and allows your la-ser technician to educate you on the treatment and the process. The patch test is mandatory to determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment. Be sure to look for a reputable estab-lishment with many happy clients.

from paTienTs To people:

mike’s smiLe storyBy Dr Kelvin Mah

Page 13: Fresh Vancouver Issue #15

13 | FreSh vancoUver ISSUe 15

for crown work only, I was a very early adopter of the technology, and know how to incorporate it into my artisan dentist’s suite of minimally invasive, highly effective tools for partial restorations.

When Mike arrived for his treatment, I began by preparing his teeth so that I could save the maximum amount of original tooth structure. The conservative nature of this treatment is quite an advantage, as no human-made material – however well-crafted – works as well as one’s own natural tooth structure. Next, I used CEREC’s special camera to take images of Mike’s sculpted tooth surfaces, then created his resto-rations using CEREC’s powerful CAD-CAM software. Finally, I milled the restorations on-site out of a block of extremely strong, high-grade ceramic designed to match the colour and feel of Mike’s smile, and in-stalled them. All this took place in a single visit! I was delighted with the results, but of course, Mike’s view is much more important:

Indeed, as Mike’s story highlights, an individual in a dentist’s chair is more than a patient. He or she is an authentic and unique person, and is entitled to be treated as one. In doing that, dentistry is elevated far above mere treatments and procedures to where it has always truly belonged: in the honest, caring and transformative service of people – body, mind and soul.

Dr. Kelvin Mah’s relaxing, stylish and ultra-modern practice, Smile City Square Dental, is located inside Vancouver’s City Square Shopping Centre. Dr. Mah and his warm and inviting team provide a variety of patient-first dental solutions, including general dentistry, smile makeovers, restorative dentistry, and oral heal procedures. Dr. Mah is a graduate of UBC’s prestigious Dental School, and is a member of the exclusive, invitation-only California Center for Advanced Dental Studies – a post graduate education program that creates today’s and tomorrow’s elite-level dental professionals. www.smilecitysquare.com

We’ve all seen them dozens of times: those dental ads on TV or in magazines, where a smil-

ing patient is lying back in a dental chair beneath the watchful gaze of her or his dentist who, of course, is wearing about the whitest, starchiest lab coat that you’ve ever seen.

I’ll be frank with you: yes, that scene does take place in many dental practices, including my own (except the part about the starchy white lab coat – my stylish wife would never let me commit such an outra-

geous fashion crime). However, what these dental ads fail to capture is that the individuals in a dentist’s chair are infinitely more than patients: they’re people! That means they have unique lifestyles, essential values and personal philosophies. And that’s why I invest quality time with each person who comes to my practice, so that I can understand and appreciate the wholeness of their personality, the distinctiveness of their essential being, and the richness of their vision. And only after grasping all of this am I equipped to craft an ideal solution that truly fits with who they are and meets their needs on every level: body, mind and soul.

In light of this, you can imagine how delighted I was when Mike vis-ited me a while ago – delighted because, in communicating with him as a person and not as a patient, I learned that he had a strong personal phi-losophy and value system, led a sophisticated lifestyle in both his work, personal and social life, held extremely high quality standards, and that he was extremely busy, with no desire to visit his dentist repeatedly to get optimal results. In other words, Mike was the ideal Smile City Square Dental patient!

Mike explained to me that his existing mercury fillings no longer “fit” who he was, and where he was going with his career and life. As an executive manager for a company leading the way in corporate so-cial responsibility, he wanted restorations that aligned with that holistic worldview, and at the same time, were natural, durable and highly func-tional. He also wanted to enhance his appearance, so that the confidence and strength he felt within could be freely expressed through his smile without any trace of hesitation or self-consciousness.

After discussing several options, Mike and I agreed that CEREC would be the ideal solution. CEREC, which is an acronym for Chair-side Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, uses high tech CAD-CAM technology to craft precise-fitting, metal free, natural-looking, and incredibly strong permanent dental restorations in a single visit. The procedure is quite comfortable, and there are no messy dental im-pressions required. And while it’s true that most dentists use CEREC

“The convenience of having the treatment performed in a single visit was great. I also found the overall experi-ence relaxing and comfortable, which was a nice surprise –inthepast,Iwouldflinchatthethoughtofgoingtothedentist. I also appreciated how friendly and professional Dr. Mahwas, andhowhedideverythingrightthefirsttime.Hereally got to know me on a personal level, and helped me understand the process. And I’m very pleased with the du-rability of my new restorations. I’ve never had a problem of any kind, and feel that having safe, metal-free restorations aligns more with my personal philosophy and lifestyle.”

tHe secretsof perfecT nails

oil will work. You don’t need to spend a fortune to take care of yourself. Spend some time massaging your lotions and oils in each night. The heat creates circulation and blood flow. It’s an anti-aging remedy that costs nothing! Be sure to remove manicure polish after one week; otherwise, it can cause brittle nails. Use a remover that is free of acetone and contains a moisturizer.

lC: How should I care for my feet between pedicures?

katherine: Use a paddle or pumice stone in the shower every day. It doesn’t take long for those calluses to build up again. After a shower, be sure to dry completely between the toes. Moisture can lead to bac-teria and pre-fungal symptoms. Calluses and ingrown toenails can be the result of ill-fitting shoes. Take your shoes off at home, but note that walking barefoot can cause the bottoms of your feet to become dry and cracked, and can lead to more calluses. Use a good foot lotion daily, and massage it in.

lC: How can I make it less expensive?

katherine: By caring for your hands and feet between treatments, you can maintain your manicures and pedicures and stretch the time be-tween treatments. Also take advantage of promotions and specials of-fered at your spa or salon. Talk to the practitioner about the possibility of purchasing packages as well.

lC: What is the trick to a beautiful mani-pedi?

katherine: Thoroughness. A good manicure or pedicure is a thorough one, which means treating each client’s particular problems. That might mean longer soaking times, paraffin wax for cracked heels, or a great massage. These are healing, therapeutic treatments – not just cosmetic. They should make you feel better all over: mind, body and spirit.

lC: What do most of us do wrong at home?

katherine: Over-trimming! Many people trim their toenails too ag-gressively, which causes ingrown nails. Another problem I see is over-zealous use of a heel blade. This can create bad results, as people take off the good skin and not just the calluses. It’s better to use paddles instead.

For more information or to book an appointment, contact Katharine Lam and South Granville Laser and Skin Care Centre at 604-714-4011. www.southgranvillelasercentre.com

I have a confession to make: I am terrible at doing my nails. It’s just not one of those girly abilities I was blessed with, and I am in con-stant envy of perfectly polished pinkies. That said, there are other

impediments to my sought-after state of manicured bliss. First, while I love getting my toes done and consider a professional pedicure a per-fectly allowable indulgence, keeping up with one’s toes can be time-con-suming, and it can get pretty expensive over time. Like many women, I just don’t seem to have enough hours in any given day, and there are a great many other demands for my money. How on earth am I supposed to keep up with my beauty routines?

The second problem is that, for some reason, for the life of me, I can’t seem to maintain a manicure for any length of time. Yes, I type for a living – and I’ve been told I’m a rather enthusiastic typist, so perhaps the sheer velocity of my click-clacking shakes that pretty paint away. Yes, I have two young children, which means a great deal of hand washing, plenty of dishes and bathtub time each day. Perhaps it is simply that my manicure can’t withstand the near-constant immersion in water. Or per-haps it’s the abuse at the hands of all the toys and dirt that those adorable little monsters were evidently born with...

Whatever the case, suffice it to say, my manicures don’t last and my pedicures require more maintenance than they get. And since I look as though I’ve allowed my six-year-old to paint my nails (again) when I do it myself, I tend to have unadorned fingers and unattended-to toes. So I decided to consult an expert. Katharine Lam of South Granville Laser and Skin Care Centre has made a career of manicures, pedicures and other esthetic services. To her, the business of caring for hands and feet is a lifestyle, a passion and an art form. She provided me with the follow-ing tips that I hope other mani-pedi-challenged Fresh Vancouver readers might appreciate.

lC: How often do I need to refresh my manicures and pedicures?

katherine: For best results, pedicures should be done every four to six weeks, and manicures ideally once a week. The timing will depend on the individual client, however. Women with callous build-up or corns, bunions or other problems might want to come for pedicures more fre-quently. It’s not just about looking good; there is a therapeutic element to this as well. The hands and feet need massage to stimulate circulation and help with anti-aging. Reflexology is wonderful for both.

lC: How can I make my manicures last longer?

katherine: Invest in a good hand cream containing collagen or vitamin E – something rich and sustaining. Apply it at times when you’re not washing your hands, which typically means bedtime. If you don’t like the greasy film of richer lotions, put it on the backs of your hands. Also use a cuticle oil such as avocado, vitamin E or almond oil – even olive

Q: How important is it to pay attention to ingredients in my daily beauty routine?

A: Today, we know that the toxicity and cancer-causing potential of cosmetics and personal care products are well documented. As recently as 1997, the US general accounting office identified more than125 cos-metic ingredients suspected of causing cancer and birth defects. The skin is the largest living organ of the body and many carcinogens will be absorbed through the skin straight into the bloodstream. A University of Pittsburgh study found that twice as many chemicals are absorbed through the skin as through the intestine.

These ingredients have been found in well known and respected brand products. They include synthetic dyes, formaldehyde, DEA, PABA, sodium laurel sulphate, PEG (polyetheline glycol) fluoride, talc and fragrances. Most cosmetics will list “fragrance”; however, fragrance is mostly a mix of over 600 raw materials and synthetic chemicals. We know that 95 percent of fragrances are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum. Artificial fragrance is found in everything from baby lotions to face creams, deodorant, shampoo and conditioners. Talc is not absorbed through the skin; however, it may be contaminated with traces of asbestos, a substance well known for causing a severe form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. Talc is also dangerous for use on female genitalia as it can enter the body and cause ovarian cancer.

Q: Now that summer is over in Vancouver and the autumn rain has started, do I still have to wear sunscreen every day?

A: Absolutely! Most of understand that up to 80 percent of what we perceive as “aging” in the skin is directly attributable to the effects of ultraviolet rays from the sun. We diligently wear our wide-brimmed hats and SPF on sum-mer days, but what many people don’t realize is that even on Vancouver’s cloudiest days we are exposed to a significant amount of skin-aging rays. Just because you can’t see the sun doesn’t mean ultraviolet rays aren’t getting through. Sitting in your car or sitting indoors in front of a window won’t protect you from dermatohe-

liosis (the technical term for sun damage). Just look at the image of this truck driver, half of whose face was exposed to sun through an open or closed truck window for many years, while the other half was in the shade of the truck. UV rays are even emitted from some light bulbs and computer screens. Just because you’re not lying on a beach doesn’t mean your skin doesn’t need protection. If you’re looking for the single least expensive and simplest thing to add to your anti-aging regimen, forget expensive lasers, Botox and dermal fillers, and start using sun-screen every day, all day. Your skin will thank you.

It all started as a research project. Caro-line McGillivray was asked by her best friend from theatre school to play a part

in a screenplay about girls being recruited into the sex trade. To learn more about the role she would play, Caroline began volunteering on the downtown eastside at a facility that served din-ner to 100 people in need each night.

“It was the first point of contact for many abused women,” said Caroline in a conversa-tion with Fresh Vancouver. “These people expe-rience things that should never happen to any human being.” The stories Caroline has from her experience are staggering. “One woman asked me what it was like to be a child. Then she told me that by the time she was four years old, her father was having sex with her. By age 10, she’d been in and out of so many foster homes it seemed easier to be on the street. I got to know her as time went by. We became friends.”

These stories, these women and these re-lationships kept Caroline coming back, doing whatever she could to help. And then it hap-pened: an incident that would change her life forever. “One night, a badly bruised woman came in,” Caroline relates. “She didn’t want food; didn’t want to talk. She only wanted to take a shower. Afterwards, she noticed a curl-ing iron that had been donated, and asked if she could use it. But she couldn’t hold her battered arms up long enough to make it work, and I could see that she was just hanging on, trying so hard not to cry. So I offered to do her hair.”

In that one moment, that single act of hu-man kindness, a concept was unleashed that would take on great momentum and become

an entity unto itself. “I don’t know anything about doing hair, and I did it so badly!” laughs Caroline. “It looked terrible! We were kill-ing ourselves laughing. The hair didn’t mat-ter; what was important was the conversation and that bonding that happens when you’re doing hair and makeup together, like being a kid. That laughter and friendship. Afterwards, she gave me a huge hug, and she always came back and asked me to do her hair. Then other women started asking.”

As a volunteer, Caroline’s job was to help

the facility provide the core needs for women in survival mode: a safe space, a meal, a shower, access to victim services or medical care. But she knew she could make a difference in an-other way. She contacted acquaintances in the film industry who could do hair and makeup. She spoke to the volunteer coordinator at the facility.

And thus was born the Beauty Night Soci-ety. December 2000 was the first Beauty Night event. Fourteen volunteers and 72 women showed up. Caroline and her staff were blown

away. Now, Beauty Night Society sees about 200 women each and every week, and are on the verge of hitting 26,000 makeovers since the organization first began. The goal is not to do hair. Beauty Night Society’s mission is to build self-esteem and help change lives, giving women the gifts of laughter, community and confidence.

“People were asking for this,” comments Caroline. “We just gave them what they wanted. There are wonderful base-needs organizations in the city. What we offer is something differ-ent; something that works in partnership with those organizations.” Beauty Night Society of-fers three streams of programming for women and youth living in poverty, including wellness, life skills development, and makeovers. Their mandate is to treat everyone with dignity and respect, regardless of socio-economic status, and that no person should be invisible or iso-lated from their community.

Never would Caroline have believed that so many women would want to participate in the numerous Beauty Night events over the past 12 years. Never would she have guessed there would be so many eager volunteers and willing partners. “People want to be part of it,” said Caroline. “Life surprises you.”

nicoLe king Q: Do eyelash extensions damage your natural lashes?

A: The right kind of eyelash extensions will not damage your lashes. My personal preference is the Novalash eyelash extensions, for a num-ber of reasons. Novalash extensions offer a unique application method that does not damage your natural lash. By adhering a single fiber to each individual lash, it allows the natural lashes to shed on their normal cycle without pulling others out with them prematurely. Novalash has also won awards for their adhesive as it is formaldehyde and fume -free. They offer all different lengths and widths of lashes, allowing our tech-nicians to customize each set to the client, providing the most natural-looking set of lashes to flatter any eye shape.

Q: During the fall and winter seasons, my skin becomes dry, dehydrated and starts breaking out more frequently. What can I do to combat both the dry skin and the breakouts?

A: Cold weather means lower humidity and this, combined with in-door heating, can wreak havoc on the skin. The lack of moisture causes dehydration and dead skin to build up increasing congestion, which leads to breakouts. The best solution is to use skincare products that will provide your skin with more hydration and perform proper exfo-liation during this time of year. The addition of a skin oil will help to combat the dehydration without clogging the pores. Look for a skin oil that is both high quality and has no fillers. Great ingredients to look for in your skincare oil are rosehip oil, ceramide-3, cholesterol oleyl car-bonate, cholesteryl nanoate, lecithin and potent antioxidants that will repair and restore the skin barrier. AfterGlow Replenishing Oil is one of the most effective and purest skin restoration oils on the market.

Weekly exfoliation will aid in removing the dead skin that is con-tributing to both the dryness and the breakouts. It is best to avoid harsh scrubs during the colder months and opt for a gentler enzyme-based exfoliation such as cranberry, pineapple or papaya. Having a monthly lactic acid peel at a skincare clinic will effectively resurface the skin, while maintaining and boosting the skin’s moisture. Lactic acid is more hydrating than glycolic acid, making it the recommended treatment during the fall and winter season. Book a consultation with a trusted skincare professional for guidance on winter skincare.

Q: Aside from exercise, healthy eating and avoiding smoking, excess alcohol and sun ex-posure, what are the best natural approaches and newest esthetic treatments for achiev-ing healthy, rejuvenated skin with minimal downtime?A: If your skin is stuck in a do-nothing rut, consider the following natural approaches options to fight the problems that affect clarity, tone, and skin laxity. • Inflammation under the skin’s surface can lead to skin sensitivity

and accelerated aging. Address underlying causes of inflammation such as food sensitivities or allergies.

• Stress has a thinning effect on our skin, making existing skin condi-tions worse and contributing to lines around the eyes, mouth and forehead. Managing daily life stressors through meditation and anti-stress botanicals such as rhodiola, ashawaganda and licorice helps keep your skin looking younger, and also you’ll feel better overall.

• Skin is a reflection of your internal health. Enhance digestive func-tion and reduce toxic body burden through a colon and liver de-tox, which includes glutamine, N-acetyl cysteine, milk thistle and probiotics.

• Incorporate organic botanicals that contain potent antioxidants in your diet and skincare products, including polyphenols found in berries, citrus fruits, acai, green tea and reishi.

• Brighten skin and correct your skin tone with kojic acid, licorice extract, niacin and vitamin C.

For esthetic treatments, consider laser skin rejuvenation. Newer methods of laser resurfacing include non-ablative lasers which cause fewer complications and have faster recovery times. In particular, Q-switched Nd-YAG lasers offer a quick and painless procedure, which works best on minor wrinkles as well as age spots, uneven complexion, skin laxity and enlarged pores. For more information on natural and aesthetic approaches to skin rejuvenation, contact your naturopathic doctor or esthetic physician.

Q: I am having difficulty getting pregnant. Before I try IVF, are there any other treat-ments that can help boost my fertility?

A: Peer-reviewed research on acupuncture in the treatment of infertil-ity confirms that there are five physiological mechanisms contributing to its positive ‘baby-making’ effects: 1. Acupuncture regulates the release of chemicals from the brain that

influence menstrual cycles and ovulation.2. Acupuncture increases blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, deliv-

ering vital nutrition to the developing eggs and embryos.3. Acupuncture stimulates the flow of natural ‘feel-good’ chemicals

into the spinal fluid, which down-regulates the nervous system, thus relieving stress and its negative biological effects on reproduction.

4. Administered on the day of an in-vitro fertilization embryo trans-fer, acupuncture significantly increases clinical pregnancy and live birth rates.

5. Administered during the medication phase of an in-vitro fertiliza-tion treatment, acupuncture beneficially influences hormonal bal-ance, helping restore fertile cycle dynamics. These physiological effects are helpful for numerous conditions re-

lated to infertility, including unexplained infertility, recurrent miscar-riage, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, male factor infertility, immunologic infertility, premature ovarian failure, advanced maternal age, luteal phase defect, thin uterine lining, poor egg quality, hormonal imbalance and other menstrual irregularities.

Imagine finding cancers before they begin to grow. Imagine identifying an aneurysm be-fore it becomes life-threatening. Now, with

whole body imaging, you absolutely can. Dr Raj Attariwala, MD, PhD, is a radiolo-

gist, nuclear medicine physician and biomedi-cal engineer. It may well be this long list of cre-dentials that is allowing him to almost single-handedly change the face of MRI diagnostics in Canada today. As medical director and radiolo-gist at AIM Medical Imaging, Dr Attariwala has

used his engineering “hat” to create a superior MRI technology that, combined with his radi-ology expertise, sets AIM apart from the rest. “We are considered the worldwide leader in MRI scanning techniques,” said Dr Attariwala. “We are changing the playing field. Our goal is to set the bar high for others in Canada to follow.”

Dr Raj Attariwala spoke with Fresh Van-couver Magazine about his unique technology, his whole-body imaging services, and the ap-

proach that puts AIM Medical Imaging light years ahead of the rest.

fresh vancouver (fv): What are the prob-lems with mainstream diagnostic imaging pro-grams in Canada?

dr Attariwala: The main problem has to do with the wait times. When I tell people at in-ternational MRI conferences that waiting times for an MRI in Canada can be six months for

tAking Aim:mri advancements mean early Detection

Page 21: Fresh Vancouver Issue #15

21 | FreSh vancoUver ISSUe 1520 | FreSh vancoUver ISSUe 15

something as simple as a knee, their jaws drop. I had one doctor from Europe ask me whether Canada is really a developed country!

Also, because wait times for MRI are such an impediment in Canada, ultrasound or CT scan might be suggested instead. In my opin-ion, CT of the low back and pelvis on a female of childbearing age should be banned, because it delivers a lot of radiation to the ovaries and cannot see the ovaries or uterus anyway. The rest of the developed world uses MRI for these areas. Even a few years ago, people had no idea about the risks of radiation. Now there is a growing awareness, especially in the US. Young people and females are more sensitive to radia-tion. The most sensitive organ in the body to radiation is the ovaries.

MRI is also much more powerful than CT. We saw a woman last week who had “normal” CT scan results, but she knew things weren’t normal. She asked for a second opinion and was sent to AIM, and sure enough our special-ized scans showed a big mass. CT just wasn’t sensitive enough to pick it up.

fv: What makes the AIM method so different?

dr Attariwala: A number of things make our method different. For starters, we have a cus-tomized machine that delivers different results. It is modified according to my specifications, and the hardware is two to three times more powerful than anything else out there. We have different technology to analyze and display these results. We can see far more than pretty much anybody else can in the world right now. We basically turn a person into a three-dimen-sional molecular structure. With no drugs, dyes or radiation, we can see everything we need to see. We can adjust and customize our different applications to target the right areas and get the desired results. Our MRI technologist is one of the most qualified in Canada. Plus, in most clinics, there is no radiologist interacting with the technicians.

Our process is also unique. When a patient comes in, we ask a few questions, then run a highly customized MRI sequence, then go over the images with the patient. We show each per-son exactly what is going on, and answer every question. Then we give him or her a report to take home that day, which can be given to a family doctor, physiotherapist, or whomever needs it.

fv: Tell us about “whole body imaging”...

dr Attariwala: Whole body scans are a revo-lutionary study and nobody does it the way we

do–not even in the United States. Whenever we see someone who’s been diagnosed with cancer, they almost always say they wish they’d known about a way to find it earlier. If you can detect cancer in the early stages, the prognosis is always better. With cancer, it doesn’t matter if you’re rich, poor, black, white; we’re all suscep-tible. You can have all the money in the world, like Steve Jobs, but you can’t buy health. For his

type of cancer, if it had been detected in stage one, he likely would have survived. And we’re not only looking at cancer; we’re looking at the brain and blood vessels, looking for risk of stroke, aneurysm – things like that. We can see almost everything.

fv: Shouldn’t everyone do whole body imaging?

dr Attariwala: The biggest impediment with whole body imaging is cost. One of my main goals is to speed it up, to make the sequences tighter, faster, and more cost-effective – which will make it accessible to more people. If we can shorten the time, we can lessen the expense, since the equipment is extremely expensive to operate and maintain.

The Canadian population needs help right now. Our health care is in transition; we’re bursting at the seams. Our objective at Aim Medical Imaging is to lead by example. My goal is to show how things can and should be done.

Aim Medical Imaging is located at 1371 W. Broadway, Vancouver, BC. To learn more about Dr Raj Attariwala and the AIM services, call 604-733-4007 or go to www.aimmedicalimaging.com.

Claire Newell: travel expert, author and president of Travel Best Bets by Jubilee Tours and Travel, familiar to many from

her daily “Travel Best Bets” segments on Global BC.. In 2013, her second book, More Best Bets, is set to release, along with the new TV show that she co-hosts, Operation: Vacation. To state the obvious, Claire is hard-working and successful. She is stunningly beautiful. She is also grounded and surprisingly human. Her goal is to make her family proud of her, and to teach her children that they can do anything they set their minds to. She had to navigate a man’s world as a very young woman to make it in the travel industry. She was so nervous on television that her knees shook. She didn’t al-ways feel like she looked very good. But now, at age 42, she feels infinitely more confident in her own skin. Claire joined Fresh Vancouver to talk about the balance of marriage, kids, televi-sion, beauty, travel and career that defines her on-the-go life.

globe trotting Beginnings“I always travelled with my parents and I got the travel bug very young. I got into the indus-try after meeting the Managing Director of one of the largest travel wholesalers in the world in London. When I came back to Vancouver, I knew I wanted to start my own business in the travel industry. Three months later, 21 years old and with no background in broadcasting, I sent a proposal to YouTV, and they called me the very next day. I had suggested simply pro-viding information, but was asked to present on TV. So I did. Then I got a call a year and a half later from a person I will be forever grateful to, the president of BCTV at the time. I went over to BCTV (now Global BC) once a month for two minutes. Now, I’m on five times a week for between 2.5 and 9 minutes. “My first book led to many more things. Following a media tour for my book, I got in-vited to do my first guest appearance on the Today Show – which I’ve continued doing from time to time. That led to being a spokesperson for Disney in the US. I also do some work for YVR, tourism boards and other organizations It’s all grown organically over the years.”

A Young Woman in a Man’s World “I was a very young woman starting my own business in an industry that is owned by men but run by women. A lot of travel agents are women but men are usually the presidents and owners behind the scenes. When I was ap-proaching these companies, it was all men in

their fifties. It was hard to be taken seriously. It was before email, so I did a lot by fax so they wouldn’t know what I looked like!”

More Best Bets: Claire’s new travel Book“When the first book came out, I was just start-ing to look at the best websites to use for travel Now, I’ve waded through dozens of them and a few have clearly risen to the surface. In the new book, I go into detail on which are my fa-vourites and why. I also look at baby boomers because they love to travel and they’ve been to the normal spots: Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mexico. They want to go off the beaten path but they also want safety and comfort. It’s a book on how to travel; not where to travel. A lot of people travel the same way for years and years. The most flattering comments I get are from avid travellers who read my book and say, wow, I had no idea I could do that.”

operation: vacation“I’m filming the first season of the new show Operation: Vacation now and it’s a real juggling act. Thankfully, they are filming around my schedule! The show is a little like What Not to Wear combined with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. People nominate others who deserve a trip; who have not been able to travel. Some of them are sick. Some of them don’t have the means. Some of their schedules haven’t allowed it. We meet the people who are nominated; then we barge into their work or dinner party and surprise them with a trip. We just did to a couple in their fifties who had never been on a plane before! It’s just the best feeling. The people open themselves up to us, and the letters and postcards we receive when they get back are just so amazing.”

Around the World with kids in tow“My kids are good little travellers and have trav-elled since they were babies. Now we’re starting to take them further afield. They’ve been to the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey. Last Christmas, we went to Panama. At spring break we are taking them on an African Safari. And they love it – I’m grateful that they don’t feel like I’m dragging them. “If you’re travelling with an infant, you don’t want to be that person 30,000 feet in the air with a screaming child. And sometimes you can’t help it. But you need to take responsibility, and bring every single thing you might need, and lots of extras. With kids who are a little older, engage them in the trip itself. Let them

know exactly what they’re going to experience. Encourage them to write down their favourite thing that day and take a picture. Get them in-volved and excited.”

voluntourism“When my son was seven and my daughter was nine we went to Jamaica and worked in an orphanage for three days. At first my kids said to me, why are we buying things for people we don’t even know? But by the time we left three days later, they would have given the shirts off their backs. I remember my son looking out the car window as we drove away, and he said, ‘Who tucks those kids in at night, Mommy?’ They started to not only realize that they have it good, but how important it is to help others. “More and more people are starting to do voluntourism. You don’t have to go for three weeks or six months. If we don’t have time in our busy lives, we can still donate a day. What I hope people understand about voluntourism is that it can be just one day. Even if you just spend a few hours, you can still have a five-star vacation the rest of the time.”

giving Back“I decided that all the book revenues would go to charity. I decided to give to children’s chari-ties – whether that means orphanages or wom-en’s shelters or single mother support. From the Claire Newell Suite at the Pan Pacific Hotel, ten percent of all proceeds from the suites in both Vancouver and Whistler are channelled to Canuck Place. I’m really grateful to Pan Pacific for agreeing to do that. I do feel kind of strange putting my name on a suite, but to have the money go to charity makes it okay!”

doing it All“I’m lucky to have a loyal and smart team around me. It allows me to do everything that I do. I need to have a nanny in order to get out the door – the hardest job I’ve ever had to hire for. The first few people I hired for Jubilee are now managing my travel business. I have people who know me enough to do things the way I would do it, and have me put on the final touches. But I have to be the person who writes the articles and appears on TV, so I have to be extremely well organized. There’s not a single day where my alarm goes off after 5:30 in the morning.”

sweat vs. Chocolate“I don’t really like to sweat. I’d rather pass on a chocolate bar than have to sweat if off for 30

minutes on a treadmill! I’m very careful with what I eat. I power walk with my best friend of twenty-five years as a way of catching up. I do like Pilates – again, you don’t have to sweat! I agreed to do it because my husband had major back surgery so we do it together once a week.”

good skincare, good genes“My mother has never done anything other than make sure she washes her makeup off and uses a good moisturizer, and if I look half as good as she does at her age, I will be a lucky woman. I’m tempted to try so many skincare treatments, but being on TV, I don’t have any downtime. I can’t have a bright red face from a chemical peel, for example! For my birthday, my mom buys me really good skincare prod-ucts. I’ve used StriVectin for probably five years, and now I use the serum under my moisturizer, and the night cream as well. I wash off all my makeup every single day and exfoliate three times a week to keep my pores from enlarging. I also use an anti-aging primer by Korres.”

Everything in Moderation“I eat well. Breakfast is always a cup of coffee and a piece of fruit. I take a multivitamin every morning. Then I’m out the door. Around 10:30 I usually have a small snack. For lunch every day I have water and a turkey sandwich with lots of veggies, mustard on both sides, salt and pepper. Around 3:30 I get so hungry I could eat my arm, so I normally have Greek yogurt or a piece of fruit and some dark chocolate – which I manage to incorporate every single day! Din-ner is usually a piece of protein, lots of veggies and a small bit of carbs, and then some sort of treat. I’m a fudgesicle girl! I don’t want to de-prive myself. If someone tells me I can’t, I’ll go eat that entire bag of Oreos, not just one. Ev-erything in moderation – from food to wine to chocolate.”

surviving travel Beautifully“I don’t care what I look like in flight. Wear slip-on shoes, comfy pants, bring a pillow and a blanket. Stay away from caffeine and alcohol. Eat very lightly and avoid salt. Go for fresh fruit and veggies and tons of water. For longer flights, get some sleep – even if you have to take a sleeping pill. Talk to your doctor about that. I wear a very light amount of makeup for a flight, then just freshen up at the end of the flight. Bring your moisturizer and toothbrush. I also wear glasses so my contacts don’t dry out.”

Evolving under the Watchful Public Eye“Six days after my son was born, 9/11 changed the face of travel forever. I was on TV that day. I could see my baby in his car seat as I was on TV talking about how I thought this would af-fect travel – and I was on every day for the next week. Days after giving birth, I felt unattractive and uncomfortable. I had heavy bangs; I wore dark-rimmed glasses; I had gained weight with the baby. Being on TV when you look like that is tough. I was pregnant on the early news the day before I went into labour, so people really have seen me at every stage! “I feel very indebted to a woman named Pam Mason at Global BC. She was the one who said to me, listen girl, stop wearing only black. She said, let’s colour your hair, grow the bangs out, wear contacts. She kind of glammed me up for TV; changed my look. I think as I get into my forties, I know who I am now. I’m coming into my own.” fv

The colder weather of fall means styl-ish coats and chunky scarves and – my personal favourite – great boots. But

it also means time to pay special attention to your skin in the wake of all that skin-damaging summer sun. Addressing dark pigmentation and wrinkles before they become severe is the simplest form of treatment and prevention. Be-sides, isn’t fall the perfect time for a pre-holiday makeover?

Shannon’s Confidence-boosting MakeoverShannon Keenan felt uncomfortable with a number of problem areas that she was forever hiding or covering up. She had dark sunspots on her face that she religiously slathered with concealer before leaving the house each day. She had small creases in her earlobes that she felt aged her, and that she covered by wear-

ing earrings everywhere she went. She was also self-conscious about the lines around her mouth, and particularly the frown line between her eyes that she felt made her look angry.

When Fresh Vancouver approached Shan-non about the possibility of doing a makeover, she was elated. “I had aged rapidly in the past few years,” she said. “I looked tired and angry – even when I wasn’t! I just wanted the way I looked on the outside to match how I feel on the inside, which is happy!”

Shannon’s makeover journey took her to the Delta Skin and Laser Care Centre, where Dr. Marcia Fleming assessed Shannon’s skin tone and problem areas, and created a course of treatment for her. Dr. Fleming felt that Shan-non’s concerns were typical of a woman her age, though the dark spots on her face were indica-tive of extensive sun damage. But she felt that Shannon had good skin tone, with excellent

subcutaneous tissue. Her skin hadn’t “deflated” or become creped, and Dr. Fleming knew it would respond well to treatment.

The TreatmentsDr. Fleming began with the Skin TX Hyperpig-mentation Program, created by Vivier Pharma. This at-home remedy is a five-step skincare program that must be applied twice daily. The combination of alpha hydroxy acid, vitamin C, vitamin A and hydroquinone in the lotion works to decrease pigmentation, which facili-tates greater effectiveness of the IPL treatments that Shannon would also receive.

The next step in Shannon’s facial makeover was the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment, also known as a photo facial. IPL uses light en-ergy to target the epidermis, or outer layers of the skin. The treatment is particularly effective for removing dark hyperpigmentation spots

like Shannon’s. Dr. Fleming usually recom-mends four to five treatments for sun damage of this calibre, though in Shannon’s case, only two were completed during the course of her makeover. The IPL treatment literally lifts the dark pigmentation to the surface of the skin, where it takes on a coffee-grind appearance and is darker and more uneven than before. It can be removed with a 30-minute microdermabra-sion (as was done with Shannon) or will even-tually exfoliate naturally. Each treatment has an immediate, noticeable effect, and the cumula-tive effects can be outstanding.

Dr. Fleming continued Shannon’s make-over with two Titan treatments spaced four weeks apart. Titan is an infrared light with a longer wavelength than IPL. The long wave-length targets the dermis, the deeper layer of skin, to stimulate collagen production and lift the skin. Titan is an effective method of bring-

ing back that youthful look to the skin; it is also the best preventative procedure for aging skin, according to Dr. Fleming. “The great thing about Titan,” said Dr. Fleming, “is that we can fool the body into stimulating collagen without traumatizing the skin.” While results are notice-able immediately, the best results are apparent six months after treatment.

Next step: Botox. With great attention to subtlety, Dr. Fleming applied Botox to Shan-non’s frown lines, crow’s feet, and upper lip. She also used it to soften Shannon’s depressor mus-cles in the lower face, which are responsible for the unintentional “sad face” appearance. “We just wanted to make her look more rested and happier,” said Dr. Fleming. “Nothing unnatural or too ‘frozen’ – people should never be able to tell you’ve had Botox; they should only notice that you look better.”

On the same day as the Botox treatment,

Shannon also received three tubes of Juve-derm filler. Her cheeks were plumped, her “marionette” lines that create the down-turned mouth were softened, her nasal-labial folds were decreased, and her lips were touched up just a little, since lips naturally deflate as we age. The most unusual treatment was the tiny bit of Juvederm that Dr. Fleming injected into each of Shannon’s earlobes to erase the lines that many women get as a result of aging or wearing earrings.

The Results Dr. Fleming is very pleased with the results of Shannon’s makeover facial procedures. And Shannon? “I really think I look ten years younger!” exclaims Shannon. “I’m 48, but I feel like I’m in my thirties again!”

Optimum health and vitality can be achieved through self-awareness and the balance of body, mind and soul.

Recently, the holistic health movement has brought about a renewed interest in several ancient philosophies such as colour therapy, reflexology and acupuncture – all natural therapies to help one achieve a perfect triad of mental, physical and spiritual balance. Colour therapy, also known as chromotherapy, is an underutilized form of balancing the body, mind and soul.

the therapeutiCs of Colour Colour therapy is a combination of two sci-ences: the utilization of light therapy and the stimulation of reflex zones. Together, these techniques support the body’s internal mecha-nisms, amplifying the healing process on vari-ous levels. Research has shown that cells not only radiate colour, but can also receive colour. Using reflex zones and acupuncture points as a point of entry for colour, the body’s mecha-nisms seem to respond to and develop with “co-lour energy.” The German physicist Dr. Fritz-Albert Popp proved that the cells of all living beings emit “biophotons” (light quanta). This radiation represents a regulating energy field, which influences the total biochemical process-es inside us. Colour therapy treatments actually give our cells energy!

Colour therapy treatments provide a ho-listic colour-balancing program for beauty and

well-being, helping balance the metabolism of the cells and improve the energy supply of the body and spirit. The reflex zones on the hands and in the face are gently treated through a light pressured colour massage, so that the harden-ing and tensions in the corresponding areas dissolve. A reflex zone is similar to a tunnel. The internal body (the organs) mirror them-selves on the skin’s surface outwards from these zones. Likewise, a healing stimulus from the external surface has an effect on the internal body. Through a precisely calculated irradia-tion of the energetic colour, the body cell can be optimally nourished with the right energy and vibration.

the anti-aging effeCts of Colour therapyThe symbol of youth is an abundance of vi-tality, which expresses itself through flawless skin, mental freshness, zest for life and vibrant health. Most people would like to possess this desired youthfulness for as long as possible, but “life” reflects energy consumption. Aging means using energy as it is available, or using more than what is being produced. If the life energy of an organ degenerates, it disappears from the surface of the skin and departs to the inside of the organ to ensure a basic supply. The corresponding reflex zone in the skin retracts – and a wrinkle is born. Through regulated colour therapy treatments on the reflex zones, the inevitable aging process, which is basically a decreased supply of precious life energy, can

be counteracted. A quick anti-aging effect takes place

through specific colour massage of the face reflex zones, resulting in a face that appears more relaxed, with a fresher, younger-looking complexion and a reduction in wrinkles. Since the psyche mirrors itself in the organs, by heal-ing energy deficiencies in the organs, the soul will also be balanced. Through the radiation of the right therapy colours on the reflex zones or acupuncture points, the bioenergy of the cells and the meridians (energy paths) can be cor-rected. Subsequently, the physical, emotional and mental blockages dissolve and a sense of well-being is restored. At the same time, a vari-ety of skin conditions such as irregularity of co-lour (brown and red spots), poor skin texture, blemishes, skin damage due to sun exposure and other signs of aging can diminish.

You’ve no doubt known the uplifting effects of walking through a green park in the vibrant fresh air. Colour therapy is a more powerful, yet still natural way to help you feel refreshed, reju-venated and balanced.

A plastic surgeon is a true cosmetic sur-geon. He or she goes through an ac-credited training program, followed by

a written examination that must be passed in order to become a member of the Royal Col-lege of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be certified to perform plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. The individual graduate is registered as a plastic surgeon doing recon-structive and cosmetic surgery.

These surgeons have privileges within the local hospital where they perform their spe-cialty. These surgeons can perform surgery outside the hospital environment, especially for improving the appearance of the body and trunk for esthetic purposes. They are also reg-istered with the provincial college to perform such procedures in a private setting clinic. There are many other specialties; for example, general practice, general surgery or gynecology, who might call themselves cosmetic surgeons as well.

Be aware that the term cosmetic surgeon seems to be used quite loosely where it encom-passes esthetic correction, whether it be surgi-cal correction or non-surgical. In today’s world, liposuction is performed by many different kinds of physicians and, therefore, it is very im-

portant for the individual consumer to review this by asking the right questions to make them comfortable that the services they are seeking are done by an appropriate person trained in that specialty. As you know, liposuction is per-formed mostly by plastic surgeons, who have been trained and qualified to do such proce-dures in their training and their practice. How-ever, liposuction surgeries are also performed by ENT surgeons, obstetrician/gynecologists and GPs.

Regarding breast surgery, such as breast augmentation, these procedures are mostly performed by plastic, reconstructive cosmetic surgeons. However, today, there are many other specialists performing such procedures as well. It is the duty of the consumer to review the practitioner appropriately and make the right decision as to whom they should choose to perform the procedure. Some plastic surgeons have elected to specialize in doing mostly cos-metic surgery, namely body contouring surgery, facelift and breast augmentation surgery, both surgical and non-surgical, and sub-specialize in that area.

With the availability of the internet and media, there is a lot of advertising by cosmetic surgeons describing the facilities they have and the services they provide. It is imperative that consumers review all these issues before choos-ing a cosmetic surgeon for their surgical or non-surgical procedure. The following points will help you choose the right plastic surgeon.

QuAlifiCAtions dEnotE QuAlitY Physicians and clinics advertise on the internet, electronic media, newspapers, journals and magazines to promote their facilities. It is the duty of the consumer to review the curriculum vitae and the qualifications of that individual, surgeon or physician. Ask the following ques-tion: “Are you working in the hospital and if so, what services do you provide?” The answer should be: “I work in the hospital as a plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon and pro-vide the appropriate services.” Review the CV of the individual surgeon or physician, and pos-sibly ask your GP for recommendations.

You’ve heard that you have one chance to make a first impression. But if you’re a business owner stuck with a bad (or absent) online reputation on Yelp, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Places,

Angie’s List, RateMDs, discussion forums or any other third-party web-sites that consumers rely upon, then you don’t even get that proverbial one chance – because today’s hyper-connected consumers will just pass you by.

But guess what? The background check doesn’t stop there. Even if people write nice things about you on rating sites and business directo-ries, today’s consumers dig deeper before they open their wallets, and scour your digital communications with a level of scrutiny and a skepti-cism that may surprise you. They’re paying very close attention to com-ments on your Facebook page, reading Tweets from you and about you, and checking your blog, white papers, reports, videos and other content – all to ensure that you’re the real deal and worthy of their trust, let alone their business.

What does this mean to you? Well, if you’re enjoying a clean bill of health on both sides of the equation, with good ratings and high per-ceived authority, then allow me to congratulate you on being among the very few businesses with its online reputation management house in or-der. Well done!

However, if you’re among the majority (and it’s by a landslide) who need to improve things – or perhaps aren’t even sure what this whole reputation thing is about – then you must take action to avoid losing customers and profit. There’s no other option. Fortunately, you don’t have to go it alone. In fact, that’s the last thing you should do (unless you have a craving for a full-blown PR crisis!). In my experience, the winning formula is to connect with a quality Online Reputation Man-agement partner who can rapidly and cost effectively help you achieve all of the following:

• Position your business in the right places, such as key directories, review sites, social media channels and so on.

• Accurately upload and maintain your business information, pro-file and other required data (note: every ‘place’ has its own rules).

Brian Koslow, author of 365 Ways to Become a Millionaire, asserts that “There is no advertisement as powerful as a positive reputation traveling fast.” We’ve never seen a business landscape evolving as fast as the Internet. That means establishing an online reputation that draws consumers in should be a top priority for every business owner and pro-fessional service provider. Ultimately, the stakes in the online business world today are so high, and the velocity of change so rapid, that Online Reputation Management is no longer simply nice to have – it’s become mission critical.

How do we determine a woman’s age simply by looking at her? Easy: we take note of her skin. We see youth in tight, glowing, plump skin. Or, if her skin exhibits sagging, wrinkling and lax-

ity, we can assess her age depending on the severity of these conditions. It follows, then, that to look ageless, we simply need to tighten our skin. And now, we can.

As we age, the collagen in our skin breaks down, resulting in wrinkles and sagging skin. A safe, effective method of tightening the skin is known as Thermage. It is a non-invasive, non-surgical radio frequency treatment that helps to tighten collagen, contour the skin and stimulate new col-lagen by heating the deeper layers of the skin. The treatment results in younger, and more youthful-looking skin. Thermage treatments require no downtime and can be performed on all skin types.

Many people have questions about the Thermage treatment. Below are answers to the questions I am asked on a regular basis by curious clients.

how does Thermage work?During a Thermage treatment, the skin is protected with a cooling spray while heat from radio frequency waves stimulates new collagen. When the growth of the new collagen is stimulated, the skin will smooth and tighten, giving you a more youthful appearance.

When will the results be noticeable? Most of our Thermage patients notice an immediate tightening of the skin after a single treatment. New collagen will continue to grow for up to six

months following treatment. Because everyone ages differently due to numerous factors (including sun exposure, health and diet), results may vary.

does it hurt? Some areas can be more sensitive than others. We recommend our pa-tients take an oral pain medication prior to treatment. With each Ther-mage radio frequency pulse, there is a cold sensation, a hot sensation and then another cold sensation, so the treatment is quite tolerable. If you know you are more sensitive than most, tell your practitioner. You should be completely comfortable during treatment.

What areas can be treated?Thermage treatments are performed on both the face and body: full face, neck, eyelids, abdomen, knees, legs, arms and hands. After each Ther-mage treatment, you can continue with your usual activities. You may ex-perience mild redness and heat for a few hours after the treatment. Some of the sensitive areas might be tender for a few days.

As a personal stylist, I work one-on-one with my clients to help them determine their own unique styles and to build

individual wardrobes that work for their lives. I work with a wide range of women of differ-ent ages, backgrounds, body types and income levels. Each client is different, yet there are a few key guidelines that every woman can follow. Using the rules below, you can clean out your closet this fall and redefine your own amazing style.

Jessie’s top six tips for Building a fabulous Wardrobe that Works for You: 1. Embrace your body. First, and most impor-tant, accept and embrace your body as it is right

now. You need to get dressed today, so wear what works for you today – not five pounds lighter or two weeks of push ups later.

2. Categorize your clothes. Assign each item in your wardrobe into one of three distinct categories. First: love it, keep it, build more outfits around it. Second: alter it, fix it, do what needs to be done so you can love it and build outfits around it. Third: give it away.

3. Be ruthless. We all have clothes that don’t fit, but to which we have some kind of attachment. If you are not wearing it, let it go. Make an exception for one or two sentimental items, like your mom’s favourite cash-mere sweater that you wear around the house when it’s cold. But if it’s a skirt you adored five years ago that has been too tight ever since, see rule number one and let it go.

4. foundation pieces create unity. Look at your ward-

robe as a whole. Does it all work together? A lot of women I work with have a mishmash of pieces – great pieces, but nothing that works with everything else. Make sure you have the basics before you buy for trend. Do you have a pair of hot jeans, a great white blouse, a well cut blazer? When you have the foundation pieces you will be able to incorporate that blouse that you love, but don’t know how to wear.

5. say goodbye. If a piece doesn’t work, fix it or let it go. When going through a client’s ward-robe, I will inevitably see a few of these. That beautiful dress that you bought on sale last year, but don’t really know how to wear, or that needs a camisole or more buttons before you can wear it... If the piece stresses you out because you

don’t have the right pants to go with it or it’s too sheer, you can do one of two things. First, let it go; there is no need to incur more stress in your life. Second, go buy the camisole – today. Not next week. Get what you need to make the piece work.

6. Make a list. Write a list of what’s missing. Be detailed: a brown belt for your “boyfriend jeans,” a necklace to wear with a black dress, a slip to wear with the gorgeous dress that you bought last year but have never worn because you don’t have the slip... The goal is to make sure everything in your wardrobe works to-gether, and that you know how to wear it. Write a list of the holes. Do you have a cocktail dress? What about a clutch? Do you need to update your black pants? How are your belts? You will need a belt for jeans and a belt for pants, and you may even need a belt for a dress – one belt can’t do all things. With a list you will be able to do focused and effective shopping, rather than wasting time and money.

By purchasing the few necessary pieces and getting rid of the ones that just don’t work, you can create a cohesive, flattering wardrobe that works for you. Another great tip is to write a list of three or four of your best outfits and stick it up on your wardrobe door so when you are late (always) you can throw on the outfit that you know works. If you’re not sure about some-thing, ask an expert or someone whose taste you trust – and whom you know will answer you honestly. Have fun and good luck!

One of the major problems with aging skin is the appearance of dark spots or pigmented lesions. The colour of the

pigments comes from melanin, a compound that is produced in melanocytes. These are cells situated on the top layer of the skin. Of the many triggers for melanin production, ultravi-olet light is the most common. When UV light hits the skin, melanin is produced to protect it against harmful irradiation. Other causes of melanin over-production are skin injury, fric-tion or skin diseases such as acne and eczema resulting in post-inflammatory hyperpigmen-tation (PIH).

Aside from PIH, the pigmented lesions fre-quently encountered in our cosmetic practice include freckles (ephelides), sun spots (len-tigines), age spots (seborrheic keratosis), moles (melanocytic nevi) and melasma. The latter typically occurs in women as it can be triggered by birth-control pills, menopause, pregnancy and genetic factors. Melasma appears as greyish or brownish discolouration on the face, usually on the cheeks and around the mouth.

Before initiating a treatment plan for any pigmented lesion, an accurate diagnosis must be established. Lesions that look suspicious for malignancy should always be biopsied to con-firm the diagnosis. Simply lasering off these lesions for cosmetics will only mask a possible disease, allowing it to progress to a more ad-vanced stage before detection. The treatment modality depends on the diagnosis. For exam-ple, while the intense pulsed light (IPL) works well for freckles, it is less ideal for melasma. In other instances, a skilful professional may use the same technology but vary parameters to treat different types of lesions with success. Frequently, different types of pigmented lesions can co-exist, thus requiring multiple modalities and sessions to achieve the desired result. An-other consideration is the skin type: the darker the patient’s skin, the more caution needed.

There are a number of common methods of treating pigmented lesions, and some are

more successful than others. We’ll address each method individually below.

topical medication: Many cosmetic creams on the market are available to lighten up facial blemishes. Cosmetic physicians can also compound creams with various bleach-ing ingredients. This is sufficient treatment for some people.

Electrosurgery and cryosurgery: These are destructive methods employing a radiofre-quency probe or liquid nitrogen to remove su-perficial pigmented lesions like age spots. These methods are non-selective, which means they can also injure the normal skin surrounding the lesions. Therefore, other options should be con-sidered if the cosmetic outcome is a primary concern. Electrosurgery and cryosurgery are also not suitable treatment of smaller lesions such as freckles.

Chemical Peel: Chemical peeling or ex-foliation is one way of treating superficial pig-mentation such as freckles and PIH, especially if they are a result of acne. Melasma responds somewhat to chemical peels. This treatment is economical, portable and requires no expen-sive lasers. Typically, more than one treatment is needed. There is also some peeling after each treatment.

Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion has the same effect as a light chemical peel. Inorganic crystal powder is used to polish the skin and to remove some superficial pigments. It also can stimulate collagen production in the dermis to some degree. Again, a series of treat-ment is needed and peeling is negligible. On its own, it is not effective in treating melasma.

laser: Laser is light with a specific wave-length that selectively targets the melanin. Common lasers used in treating pigmented lesions include the KTP, ruby, and alexandrite lasers. The laser light has a high affinity to me-lanosome, the organelle which contains the melanin. The scab formed at the treated area falls off in a week or so, leaving the skin with a clearer complexion. Most of the pigmented le-

sions mentioned earlier, including many cases of small moles, will respond to laser treatment in experienced hands.

intense pulsed light (iPl): IPL is a light source consisting of multiple wavelengths, thereby enabling it to treat different skin targets such as melanin and hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the molecule that imparts the red colour in blood. Instead of thick scabs which occur after laser treatment, “micro-crusts” form after IPL treatments. “Micro-crusts” can easily be cov-ered by make-up, allowing the person to con-tinue with normal social engagements. In gen-eral, more sessions of IPL are needed to remove a lesion than a laser.

fractional laser: Fractional laser is not a pigment-selective laser. Because the laser beam is broken (fractionated) into micro-columns of light, the skin can be treated with a much high-er intensity and has fewer side effects and short-er recovery time. I have found this technology to be more effective in treating PIH and some resistant cases of melasma than other methods.

Regardless of the treatment method of pig-mentation in aging skin, to increase the chance of a successful outcome, it is absolutely crucial to be vigilant about sun protection, meaning sunscreen and sun avoidance. Conditions such as melasma and freckles recur readily with fur-ther sun exposure. A final note of caution is that overtreatment can itself lead to PIH and scarring.

We are more aware than ever before of breast cancer screening and preven-tion, but that doesn’t mean we are

doing what we should to watch for early signs of this disease. Are you aware that there are three cancers all women should screen for regularly?

Breast CancerHave you had your regular breast exam recent-ly? Women in their fifties through their seven-ties should have a screening mammogram done every two years. Women in their forties should have this done annually, as their breasts are denser. However, it is very important that every woman does monthly “shower breast exams” following a period, and annual breast exams with a family doctor. A shower breast exam is best done in the shower with wet, soapy hands, which makes it much easier to examine the breasts. In BC, we have a screening mammog-raphy program in place that offers screening to all women from age 40 to 79. Screening mam-mograms are the best way to detect the earliest signs of breast cancer. Do this as your birthday gift to yourself each year.

Cervical CancerCervical cancer screening is very important. Although it is a cancer of younger women, it

is the one cancer that can be picked up at the earliest stages with your regular PAP smear, and it is usually 100 percent treatable. Screening is started from age 21 or after having been sexual-ly active for three years (whichever comes first) and continues up to age 69 when you gradu-ate from this program! Your PAP smear needs to be an important part of your annual check-up and screening for disease with your family physician.

Colorectal CancerThe next cancer that we should be aware of and need to be checked for is colorectal cancer, or CRC. Both men and women are at risk of de-veloping CRC. The risk increases with age, par-ticularly after the age of fifty. The average per-son has a one-in-18 lifetime risk for developing CRC. If CRC is detected at an early age before symptoms start, the cure rate is 80 percent – so early detection and intervention really does save lives!

Colorectal cancer is often a silent disease with no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include blood in the stool and pain and changed bowel movements. Should you have any of these, you need to contact your doctor as soon as possible. You may be at an increased risk for CRC if you are over 50 years

of age, you have a family history of CRC, or you have had polyps.

There are a number of tests performed here in BC, like the Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT), which looks for hidden blood in the stool. The newer Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) test is more sensitive; however, there is a small charge at the laboratory for it (approximately $23). And then there is the colonoscopy – the most accurate diagnostic investigation for CRC. A doctor can detect small polyps at an early stage and remove them for diagnosis and preven-tion. Almost all CRCs develop from these small polyps. Everyone should be checked for CRC starting at age 50.

With regular screening, you can be sure to catch any problems at the earliest and most treatable stage. In the case of colorectal cancer, you can even reduce your risk of ever getting it. Every woman should screen for these three cancers on a regular basis to ensure your con-tinued good health.

revamp Your workouT!A TrAiner’s ApproAch

4. cArDio AnD FAT BurninGMy favorite form of cardio is HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and is something that you can do with no equipment at all. I personally do this type of workout three times a week in the morning in addition to my strength training. For beginners, do each exercise for 20 seconds, with 20 seconds rest between exercises. For intermediate and advanced levels, work out 20 seconds on, with 10 seconds rest between exercises.Table 2 on page 33 is a sample advanced program.

5. resTAllow at least one but not more than three days between the same mus-cle group training. Beginners should do two to three sessions per week; intermediate level should be three to four sessions per week; advanced workouts are more than four times per week.

6. Your neW proGrAM So what do these guidelines make your new workout program look like? Here are some helpful pointers:

Beginner: One exercise per muscle group with sets and reps based on table 1. To allow for sufficient recovery, the beginner would have two to three workouts evenly spaced throughout the week (i.e., Monday and Thursday; or Monday, Wednesday, Friday.)

intermediate: Two exercises per muscle group with different exer-cises per muscle group throughout the week. Intermediate-level work outs can tolerate more than three sessions per week so would need to train more than one day in a row (i.e., upper body exercises on Monday and Thursday; lower body exercises on Tuesday and Thursday).

Advanced: An advanced program could be a split routine of two days on and one day rest. An example would be: Monday, upper body “PULL” exercises like upper back, traps, biceps; Tuesday, lower body ex-ercises; Wednesday, upper body “PUSH” exercises like chest, shoulders, triceps; Thursday, rest.

Use these guidelines to revamp your program to keep your ulti-mate goal on track. Cocktail party and little black dress season is fast approaching, ladies! How do you want to look and feel? Define your goal now and enjoy the season!

Tanya Hunt, NSCA Certified Personal Trainer, began her career training with fitness coaches and competitive fitness models, and along the way she recognized what it takes to achieve positive, lasting results. As a personal trainer, I get constant emails with questions and concerns about individual training programs. All too often, the complaint is from people who have been training for months

without seeing any progress and are ready to give up out of frustration. There is nothing worse than wasting your precious time and effort on a program that has overstayed its welcome and is now ineffective.

I learned this lesson the hard way when I was a teen struggling with my weight. I paid a local trainer $40 to give me a starter workout pro-gram. I did this program exactly as he wrote it for 18 months! I was proud of my dedication, but totally discouraged because I didn’t see re-sults after the first few months. I thought maybe the program was wrong for my body, or I was doing it wrong... when in actual fact there was nothing wrong with the program or my technique. My body had adapt-ed to the workout and anything after the first 60 days was a complete waste of time. After a decade of reading, experience and trying different things, I have learned that it really isn’t that complicated. You need to decide what you want to do, and change things often within the rules of getting your desired result. Below are five guidelines I suggest following while revamping your exercise program.

1. DeFine Your GoALThe first thing you need to do is set a specific goal pertaining to your fitness level. A goal to “lose weight” is not enough detail. “I would like to lose 8 pounds of body fat and define the muscle in my shoulders and legs in 45 days” is a measurable goal. Many women are afraid of training for hypertrophy (muscle gain), but I can assure you that in most cases it is what will give you the desired result. Adding muscle to your frame will increase your metabolism and enable you to burn more calories at rest, while shaping and toning your body. Doing hours of cardio alone is not the answer. If you are a pear shape and you start an extensive cardio program without weight training, you will only end up a smaller, softer pear when you reach your weight goal. To take control of your body shape, you have to build and sculpt with lean muscle.

2. KnoW Your WorKouT GuiDeLinesDo you want to train for muscle strength, muscle endurance, or hyper-trophy (muscle tone)? Depending on your goal, follow the suggestions in table 1 on page 33 to meet it.

3. eXercisesDeciding which exercises to incorporate will be dependent on time and the equipment you have available, as well as your goal and experience. A general rule I have is to incorporate core exercises that are multi-joint and work one large muscle group and more than one smaller muscle group (i.e., bench press or squat). This saves time and also burns a great-er amount of calories. Do these at the beginning of your workout and do the assistance or single-joint exercises at the end of your work out (i.e., bicep curls).
