Introduction

This is the first report in what will become a series of monthly investigations into various markets in the Middle East/GCC. The scope of the markets will be expanded over the course of 2015.

The initial focus is on fresh and dried mango as well as chilies in the GCC area. Additionally there will be monthly comment on the global market for mango puree and juices. This comment should be viewed in conjunction with the ITC Market Insider platform:

http://www.intracen.org/itc/market-insider/fruit-juices-pulps-and-purees/

Being the first of these reports, we would particularly ask for feedback. As the reports are filed, a clearer picture will emerge of market trends and the ability to forecast market sizes and prices will improve.

1. Market Dynamics

1.1. United Arab Emirates - Dubai

Chilies are in high demand now the season is underway. United Araba Emirates chilies are at a high price while there is also strong demand for Indian chilies which are favoured by customers.

There is little demand from Arab customers for mango, which is in short supply with most availability from Indonesia and Kenya and only sporadic supply from elsewhere. These are sort after mainly by Western ex-pats, who are prepared to pay the higher prices, but Africans are forced to wait until damaged fruits are sold cheap.

While there is good demand for dried mango, it is rare to find and coming only from Thailand. The main demand for dried mango is from Filipino ex-pats, with many bringing it into the country when they return from home leave. A steadier, low-price alternative would be welcomed.

Now the market is getting into full swing, produce prices are gradually reducing from their early season high. The likes of okra, tomatoes, onions, chilies, fresh leaves, eggplant, lemons, potatoes and oranges are reliably strong sellers.

Other items that are now in season include beetroot, capsicum, cauliflower, cabbage, zucchini, broccoli, snap peas, bitter melon and turnips and the increasing supply is creating satisfied customers who are generally selecting goods by quality over price.

Beans are currently in short supply and facing strong demand.

1.2. Oman

The chili season has begun and prices are reasonable as Oman grows its own chilies, which are supplemented by a few coming from Iran.

There are few mangoes in this market and those that are come from Pakistan and Indonesia. There is little awareness and demand for them in the local market.

Dried mango is not available in Oman.

Overall, the Omani market is enjoying a good supply of seasonal fruit and vegetables such as broccoli, chilies, okra, eggplant, pumpkin, zucchini, cantaloupe, turnip, tomato and bananas. Sales are strong with customers happy to have access to the fresh produce predominantly from Salalah, known as the “salad bowl of the Gulf”.

1.3. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

There are few mangoes in the market currently. The only ones available are from Egypt and Kenya and they are very expensive. Dried mango is rarely found.

Chilies are also currently expensive in Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia. While there is a surplus of vegetables from the local market at good prices, lemons are only from South Africa, Egypt and Turkey and tomatoes

are currently commanding high prices equivalent to those experienced during the high demand of Ramadan.

There are also, no fruits and vegetables available from Syria and Jordan, previously strong and regular suppliers. Recent bouts of heavy rain have also helped keep prices high.

2. Media

2.1. United Arab Emirates

Dubai continues to focus on food hosting the ‘6th International Exhibition for Vegetables and Fruits in the Middle East 2014’ in Dubai's World Trade Centre from 9-11 November. The event drew around 150 exhibitors from 26 countries, emphasising its place as global hub for fruit and vegetable trade due to its strategic location as a transit point in the Gulf, as well as its modern facilities. According to the 2014 United Nations Comtrade Report, over AED 3 billion in estimated imports of fresh produce were recorded during the first half of 2014. At least 661 million kilograms of fruits and vegetables were imported to the Emirates during the same period. (See reference 1)

The United Arab Emirates is a big import market of agri-food products, with an imports value that reached US$ 15 billion in 2013. Thus, this country is positioned as the second largest importer of agri-food products in the Gulf region with a share of 35% in 2013 after Saudi Arabia whose share reached 42%.

The total volume of agri-food products exported by Morocco to this destination reached 2,797 tons in 2013, with an increase of 103% compared to 2011. The fruits and vegetables exports value to the United Arab Emirates market reached US$ 3.6 million in 2013, with an increase of 106% compared to 2011 and 260% compared to 2012.

The main products exported to this market are citrus. (See reference 2)

It is estimated that Abu Dhabi farmers will produce over 38,800 tons of produce during the 2014-2015 farming season, said a spokesperson of the Abu Dhabi Farmers Service Centre (ADFSC). This is up from 28,500 tons in the 2013-2014 season. The value of locally produced vegetables and fruits is expected to grow by around 25% this year, compared with 2013. ADFSC is an Abu Dhabi government organisation tasked with improving the farming sector in the emirate. (See reference 3)

A leading agricultural producer and exporter of banana products, Ecuador's export to the United Arab Emirates reached 2,094 tons to the value of US$ 1.2 million in 2014.

The rise of urban population in the United Arab Emirates that is expected to reach 7.9 million by 2020, according to the World Urbanization Prospects report, leading to the increase of the country's food market. Furthermore, the World Bank projects the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region's food market could exceed AED 3.65 trillion (US$1 trillion) by 2030. (See reference 4)

125 companies from more than 25 countries will cater to the 5,000 visitors expected to the Middle East Natural and Organic Products Expo (MENOPE 2014) in Dubai in the next two days. It is the Middle East’s only niche expo for organic and natural products According to a Euro monitor study, the Middle East and North Africa market for organic products alone would be US$120 million by 2017.

The exhibition is also supported by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). Also participating are Dubai Municipality; Ministry of Agriculture of Saudi Arabia and Malaysia; Saudi Organic Farming Association; and Department of Ayush, Indian Ministry of Health, besides other international participants. (See reference 5)

The Dubai-based United Arab Shipping Company, the largest maritime shipping company in the Middle East and one of the leading shipping companies in the world, announced its intention to expand its current fleet of refrigerated containers. (See reference 6)

2.2. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Consumers have been hit hard in Saudi Arabia as the price of tomatoes has doubled from SR5 to SR10 a kilogram over the past month. The rising prices have been attributed to a shortfall in the local harvest, disruption of imports from Turkey through war-ravaged Syria, and the arrest of expatriate traders of the commodity. Many shoppers are refusing to buy at the high prices.

Traders at the central vegetable market said that prices would remain high for the next few days until the local harvest production arrives. ‘We are waiting for the harvest from Al-Kharj near Riyadh.’ (See reference 7)

Saudization of the vegetable market is resulting in an estimated daily loss of SR4 million according to Moatasem Abu Zinada, the chief of commission agents at the Jeddah Central Vegetable and Fruits Market. The new stipulation is that non-Saudi customers are banned from buying in bulk and are only allowed to buy two or three boxes of any product. The bulk of the SR150 to SR170 million worth of fruits and vegetables imported to the Kingdom goes to the Jeddah Central market and about 50% of the customers in the central market are expatriates. (See reference 8)

Israeli occupation authorities have barred ten truckloads of agricultural products from passing out of the Gaza Strip at Kerm Abu Salem crossing due to an alleged dispute between the Israeli army and the Ministry of Agriculture. The dispute is preventing the trucks and their cargo of 100 tons vegetables destined for Saudi Arabia and West Bank to pass. (See reference 9)

Jordan's Department of Agriculture, Jordanian fresh fruit and vegetable exports in the first five months of the year recorded increased to 373 thousand tons, a 12.7% increase over the same period a year ago. Goods were exported to 44 countries, with the largest percentage going, about 80% of all shipments to Arab countries including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The most exported products were tomatoes, with 67% of the total, followed by lettuce, cabbage and sweet peppers. In fruit, peaches accounted for about 46% of the total, and melons and watermelons, with 41%. (See reference 10)

Fruit producing companies from Greece are on a tour of the Gulf countries to seal deals with suppliers and supermarkets. Their visit is part of their attempt to fill the void left by the Russian ban on agriculture foods from European countries.

The trade delegation joined the Foodex Saudi 2014, the second food and beverage exhibition that took place in Jeddah from November 17-20. The visit to Jeddah is part of a larger tour to promote Greek fresh produce throughout the Gulf and has been co-financed by the EU. The 26 fruit producers come from the northern regions of Greece that is home to 90 percent of the country’s fruit production. (See reference 11)

Saudi Arabia is the single-largest food market in the Gulf, accounting for more than 60% of the region’s total food consumption but while it is the region’s largest food producer, representing 74.1% of total production in the GCC, it imports more than US$14.2bn worth of food and beverage products each year to meet its consumption demands. Currently, the Kingdom meets 35% of its domestic food demand. The young demographic is becoming increasingly health conscious in response to the serious medical issues so prevalent in Saudi Arabia – diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and obesity. (See reference 12)

With obesity and diabetes levels rising in the Kingdom, many consumers are now taking up healthier choices and doctors are recommending that people eat organically produced vegetables and fruits. (See reference 13)

Annual hospitality exhibition, The Saudi International Food, Beverage & Hospitality Exhibition (HORECA) was held for the 3rd year in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from November 18-20. HORECA. Fruits and vegetables are included among a broad range of topics and businesses from food processing technologies, skills and equipment, to packaging, frozen food, refrigeration, fisheries, milk products, meat and poultry beverages and more. (See reference 14)

2.3. Oman

Dust storms, hail and intermediate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning battered Muscat and Sohar recently causing damage and transport issues due to road closures. Snow also fell in Batinah farmers in the region were more concerned about the damage to their crops that is likely to prevent them getting to market. (See reference 15)

Tanzania hopes its deep historical ties with the Sultanate will encourage Omani companies to invest in agriculture and mineral resources in the East African country. During her visit to Oman, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania, Anne Makinda, told the Times of Oman that her country was keen to promote opportunities for business between the two countries and asked local companies to consider tapping into her country's rich resources, including a wide variety of crops. (See reference 16)

3. Price Information

3.1. Mango fruit juice and pulps

Globally the mango juice market is under some supply pressure. Totapuri from India is in quite short supply just now. This flavour occupies the central position in the mango juice market. It is considered as less desirable than Alphonso but more appreciated that the so called ‘New World’ variants such as Kent and Tommy Atkins.

At the time of writing, prices from India are at the following levels:

Origins Concentration Price Transportation

India Alphonso, aseptic puree, 17 brix US$1450-1475/mt CFR Rotterdam

India Totapuri, aseptic concentrate, 28 brix US$1200-1225/mt CFR Rotterdam

India Totapuri, aseptic puree, 14-16 brix US$775-785/mt CFR Rotterdam

Although ‘New World’ origins are off season, the last prices that were reported showed:

Origins Concentration Price Transportation

Brazil Tommy Atkins, aseptic concentrate, 28 brix US$1200-1250/mt FOB Brazil

Mexico Tommy Atkins, aseptic concentrate, 28 brix US$1050-1150/mt CFR Holland in bulk

Brazil Tommy Atkins/Palmer, ss aseptic, 14-16 brix US$950/mt FOB Paranagua

Colombia Magdalena, aseptic concentrate, 28 brix US$1250/mt FOB Guayaquil

It is important to note that mango juice and puree prices from Brazil are usually higher due to strong domestic demand.

Overall demand is steady but there is a clear expansion in origins bringing their local flavour of mango juice and purees to the international market place. Over the past few years this expansion has depressed prices for spot sales and clearly demonstrated the need to forge vertically integrated supply relationships.
