    FRESUpdate

    March 2010

The announcement that ASCOD SV has been selected for FRES SV

secures a number of very important things. It secures the best

protection the British Army has ever had from an armoured fighting

vehicle. It secures the best financial deal for the British taxpayer. It

secures over 10,500 jobs for skilled British workers and it secures the

future of the British tank industry. That industry is alive and well andnow resides in the WelshValleys.

Our partners will be key to the delivery of this programme and

capability to the British Government and British Army. They include

Lockheed Martin UK which has designed and developed a turret for the

Scout variant of ASCOD SV that sets new standards in ergonomics and

fightability for the soldiers, the MoDs Defence Support Group (DSG)

who will carry out substantial work on the assembly and test of

ASCOD SV, and a host of other suppliers that will help deliver this

programme on time and on budget.

We are delighted that the MoD has selected ASCOD SV for its FRES SV

programme. It is a decision we believe will sustain the British tank

industry for future generations. We are confident that the decision will,

most importantly, provide the best protection for British soldiers, as

well as the long-term value and the best military capability for the UK

    Government and the MoD.

We look forward to delivering this contract in partnership with the MoD

for the benefit of Britains armed forces.

ASCOD SV offers the soldiers thevery best protection available.

    Designed to the British Armys

    requirement, the vehicles

    performance easily matches anything

else in its class. A turret designed

specifically to the Armys needs will

    give them good ergonomics, making

it easier for the soldiers inside to do

    their job, but offering significant

    commonality with the Warrior turret

for ease of maintenance and support.

    Its a Modified Military Off-The-

Shelf (MMOTS) vehicle, developed tomeet the British Armys particular

needs. The ASCOD family has already

proven its ability. The Spanish Armys

Pizarro and the Austrian Armys Ulan

vehicles, earlier ASCOD variants, have been fielded. Both Ulan and

Pizarro, which share the same basic

    vehicle platform and much additional

    technology, have evolved over the

course of more than a decade.

ASCOD SV builds on this proven

    spiral of development and test,

    deriving benefits from in-service

    experience and in-series production.

FRES SV will have an extremely wide

    range of variants. ASCOD SVs

    Common Base Platform will provide

the foundation for every vehicle, fromthe Scout/Reconnaissance vehicle to

the heavy bridge-laying and direct fire

    vehicles. ASCOD has already done

    this in Europe.

Designed with the British Army, andsuccessfully demonstrated in

    September 2009, General Dynamics

    generic Electronic Architecture

    builds on our experience integrating

over 13,000 of the British Armys

vehicles. In ASCOD SV, it manages

    the complex systems effectively,

    enables re-roling quickly on

    operations, and makes support

    considerably easier for the engineers

who look after the Armys fleet.

    Right for todays soldiers

    Right for a 30-year life

ASCOD SV is designed to a rating

of 42 tonnes. FRES SV must meet

todays need. But it also needs to be

    the right vehicle for tomorrow.

Growth is key in a vehicle that will be

around for 30 years. The FRES SV

Scout variant will initially weigh about

34 tonnes, but will need to grow to

    accommodate the addition of new

    technology and equipment to meet

new threats as they emerge over its

    30-year life cycle.

ASCOD SV more than meets this

requirement. It has been designed to

have room to grow to 42 tonnes with

    only minor component upgrades. It

    avoids costly major redesigns halfway

through a vehicles life. This growth is

    possible thanks to General Dynamics

    UKs selection of drivetrain.

Despite its modernity, the Renk 256B

    transmission is tested and proven,

currently helping to drive the new

    generation of German Puma IFVs.

Capable of operating to 45 tonnes it

    combines with MTUs 600kW 8V

    engine to provide unparalleled growth

    potential for FRES SV.

will all take place at DSG,

    developing the strong joint

    relationship that already sees

    DSG and General Dynamics UK

working together on the Armyscurrent vehicles.
