FRENSHAM FELLOWSHIP | newsletter SUMMER 2018/2019 n the 2018 half of the Fellowship Centenary celebrations, we were delighted to see so much support of the School with Old Girls participating in all events. We had all Reunion groups – 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 Years On – come back to School to enjoy tours, reconnect with former school friends and see the many new facilities that have been updated since they left. The AGM and Dinner had one of the largest attendances in past years with over 80 guests, and our Wellington Country Lunch saw nearly 60 guests travel up to three hours to participate. It was heartening to hear news from these Old Girls and, for those who visited us, to listen to stories about past times and see how lovely the School looks and feels. The most constant compliments are about the girls’ wonderful singing at Sunday Service, and how beautiful the gardens and grounds look. We are indeed fortunate that our girls have such stunning surroundings in which to learn, grow and play. Also heartening is to hear about life beyond school, and how our Old Girls are truly living in a way that continues to embody the School’s motto, In Love, Serve One Another. The AGM was held this year at the Royal Sydney Golf Club where we farewelled long time committee member Liddy Barton (Elizabeth Chandler, 1950) and thanked her for her involvement and counsel. The new Executive comprises Annette O’Connell (Moxon, 1983) President, Liz Hunter (Elizabeth Aylmer, 1980) Vice- President, Ingrid Ridge (Merrett, 1984) Secretary, and Anna Hayes (Litchfield, 1986) Treasurer, with two new members, Pook Austin (Alison Cameron, 1968) and Vickie Ciddor (Holmes, 1968) being elected to join the ongoing Committee of Susie Arnott (Margaret Taylor, 1959), Cath Brennan (Raynolds, 1979), Sam Kennedy (Greig, 1991), Julia Laverty (Forbes, 1980) and Kate Waldren (Herbert, 1990). The Committee represents a range of ages and demographics, making it as representational as possible of the Fellowship community, in order to serve members’ needs. Kirsty McIvor (1984) was our very popular guest speaker at the AGM. Kirsty is formerly of the ABC and the UN, and was an engaging, interesting and amusing orator. Caroline Storch (Clark) and others from the Class of 1953 donated to the School an original painting called Irises by Sir Sidney Nolan – accepted by Ms Gillick – in appreciation of their years at Frensham. The Farewell to Year 12 Breakfast and Service was a bittersweet occasion, with much laughter at my reference to the lifelong connection and a few tears at Vice-President Liz Hunter’s reading of the poem by Edgar Albert Guest, It Couldn’t be Done. 42 girls joined Fellowship (two had joined in 2017) and we look forward to hearing of their news and reconnecting with them in future years. One of the largest events on the calendar was the Official Opening of the new Dining Room which can now seat up to 400 girls and staff, and acknowledgement of the completion of the expansion and refurbishment of Kennedy House. The Dining Room was opened by Chair of Governors, Frensham Schools, Libby Stuart (Elizabeth Stuart, 1984), in honour of Old Girl Dr Catherine Hamlin AC, MBBS, FRCS, FRANZCOG, FRCOG (Nicholson, 1940), in recognition of her work at the Fistula Hospital, Ethopia. Dr Hamlin sent us this message: My best wishes to all of the girls currently studying at Frensham. My days at Frensham were very happy; I am sure yours are too. Annette O’Connell (Moxon, 1983), President COMMITTEE 2018/2019

1919 - 2019 Centenary of the establishment of FRENSHAM FELLOWSHIP

BACK TO FRENSHAM WEEKEND – Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 April 2019

019 marks the Centenary of Frensham Fellowship’s establishment in 1919. A preliminary meeting was held on 13 December 1918 of Staff, Prefects and Old Girls, to make arrangements about the formation of Frensham Fellowship. The stated Objects of the Fellowship were: to carry on the School tradition of love and service, to keep Old Girls in

touch with the School, and to encourage Members to interest themselves in current thought and activities.

A century later, we are celebrating 100 years of Frensham Fellowship with a special weekend where it all started. This is a monumental occasion, so please save the date for the ‘Back to Frensham Weekend’ on 6 and 7 April where we have a series of special events and activities planned. 2009 and 1979 cohorts have already organised their reunions for the weekend, and we encourage all Fellowship members to come back to Frensham to celebrate, reminisce, and see the old and the new in and around Frensham.

Invitations to the Saturday night Cocktail Party will be sent in the new year, and we hope to see Clubbe Hall at capacity for a special Fellowship Centenary Service and Concert on the Sunday morning. Please note for your diary!
