Passengers Bordier and his child1Illre drowned also the exhausted captain ota launch•

The wreck occurrsd in the harbor ot "IsleDauphin" on April 1st, 1725.

The captain stayed on board until the lastlong· boat cleared.

'rbe accused declares his name is NicolasLUSlU'ier, that he is a priest belonging tothe order ot st. Dom1nic, twenty-nine yearser age and chaplain on board the vessel "LaGironde, native ot the city ot Peris, parishot St. Pau1.. His tather is a hat merchant.Further stating he lived in the Dom1nicancOImIIunity at Orleans, France during the year1719 and betore that 1I8.S a lieutenant in theFrench Army. He denies he became a priestto cover his act ot desertion, that he wasordered by his superior to come here, show­ing letter. duly signed by the proper au­thorities to sustain his contention. Hewas appointed Chaplain at La Rochelle onMay 20, 1723 end sent to Rochetort, there­upon he was assigned to the ccmpany's ship"La Gironde," cOIDDanded by Captain ;rastrain.He aays he had visited in 1714 or 1716, withthe consent ot h1s tather end superiors,Eng] and, Holland, Norway and Russia.

He admits ridiculing De Verteull and makingdetamatory remarks but denies haviDg writtenanyth1ng against the characters ot 1Ir. & IIrs.De Verteull, denying he mllde a houae to housecanvas in New Orleans, asking people to readsuch remarks although 1Ir. Berard asked himtor a copy but he retused with the excusethat it was not complete.

J"ulian any suggestionsregarding it and that he received the saidpicture one month atter he had slept at st.J"ul1en's home, further declaring the onlyreason he made the rebus wae to aggravatesomeone who had attacked his reputation andthat had carried false tales to the bishopin an effort to have .him defrocked. fhenquestioned why ha did not wear his habit. andtonsure, he answered it 1188 not compUaoryto wear the standardized white cassock andupon showing hiB tonsure admitted he did nothave hiB head Shaved very often and also thathe did drink on Holy Thureday and Good lridayaboard the veesel "La Gironde" but not ashore.

Lusurier is found ~ilty of rebellion toEpiscopal Jurisdiction, of unbecoming con­duct, including irreverence, of defectivecommission, of irregularity, by contraven­ing the interdict against him, and by leav­ing off his habit.

Lusurier ordered to observe the interdictin this Diocese and fast ten times, on suc­cessive Wednesdays and Fridays, recitingthe "Miserere" at such tLes; and he shallstay under arrest on shipboard so long ashe remains in t he Diocese (of «.\lebec.)
