His tather is a hat merchant.Further stating he lived in the Dom1nicancOImIIunity at Orleans, France during the year1719 and betore that 1I8.S a lieutenant in theFrench Army. He denies he became a priestto cover his act ot desertion, that he wasordered by his superior to come here, show­ing letter. duly signed by the proper au­thorities to sustain his contention. Hewas appointed Chaplain at La Rochelle onMay 20, 1723 end sent to Rochetort, there­upon he was assigned to the ccmpany's ship"La Gironde," cOIDDanded by Captain ;rastrain.He aays he had visited in 1714 or 1716, withthe consent ot h1s tather end superiors,Eng] and, Holland, Norway and Russia.

He admits ridiculing De Verteull and makingdetamatory remarks but denies haviDg writtenanyth1ng against the characters ot 1Ir. & IIrs.De Verteull, denying he mllde a houae to housecanvas in New Orleans, asking people to readsuch remarks although 1Ir. Berard asked himtor a copy but he retused with the excusethat it was not complete.
