FRENCH RIVIERA & ITALY A key cruising region, the Cote d’Azur or French Riviera is regarded as one of Europe’s prime holiday destinations and includes a number of fantastic cruise destinations. Be it the culture capital of Marseille, the millionaire’s paradise of Monaco or the fabulous shops of Cannes, the French Riviera offers glitz and glamour to cruise passengers. Italy’s ports are famed cruise destinations and the opportunity to visit locations such as Rome, Florence, Naples, Messina and Venice mean that cruises to Italy can offer unmatched historical and cultural excursions for cruise passengers. The wide range of ports mean this region provides something for everyone, however it is worth noting that transfer times can be quite long for some of the inland cities. As with much of the Mediterranean this region offers ports with a relatively short distance between them, meaning the chance for longer stays in port and a wider variety of port of calls is more common. Additionally many of these ports can be accessed by both cruises starting in mainland Europe, as well as longer No-Fly cruises from the UK. www.cruiseexperts.org DESTINATION GUIDES

HistoryBoth Italy & the French Riviera were moulded by Roman influence and therefore churches and forts are a common feature along the coasts of these areas. The fall of the Roman Empire led to mixed fortunes for both areas, with numerous tribes and races fighting it out for possession of the important cities & seaports present in the region.

Both areas experienced a resurgence following years of war and Italy went on to become one of the powerhouses of art and music during the Italian Renaissance, while the French Riviera, spurred on by the aristocratic families of the region such as the Grimaldis, became a popular holiday destination with higher classes and the rich.

In modern history The French Riviera has continued its reputation as a destination for the rich and famous, especially in such cities as Cannes, with its world famous Film Festival, and in Monaco, which is renowned for its opulent displays of wealth such as fantastic hotels & casinos and, of course, its world famous Grand Prix.

Italy unified and became a single country in the mid 1800’s before becoming a republic in 1946. Since then it has become an immensely popular tourist destination due to its mix of incredible weather, high fashion and modern culture and fantastically preserved historical sites. Amazing locales such as the buried town of Pompeii, the Vatican City in Rome, the fashion houses of Milan and the unique proposition of Venice have made this country a must see destination for all tourists, especially cruise passengers.

CuisineItalian food is world famous and has influenced culinary tastes worldwide. Do not miss the opportunity to try Pizza and Pasta as it is meant to be made and the communal nature of food that has become integral to Italian families is something not to be missed. Along the French Riviera seafood is highly recommended as you would expect, however be aware that in many of the larger locations a premium will have to be paid for your food.
