Fremantle Located in the metropolitan region of Perth, Fremantle is a vibrant city with an eclectic mix of entertainment and cultural attractions.

Just 30 minutes from Perth’s city centre is the bustling and dynamic port city of Fremantle, one of the easiest cities in the world to explore by foot, bicycle or scooter, since all its leading attractions are in close proximity. Visitors will enjoy the Fremantle Tram Tour, which takes regular circuits around the city and includes informative commentary. Fremantle is recognised as the best-preserved 19th Century seaport in the world, with over 150 buildings classified by the National Trust. Established in 1829 as a port for the f ledgling Swan River Colony, Fremantle was the major city in Western Australia for much of its early history. Apart from the rich heritage, the brilliant culture and relaxed atmosphere of Fremantle attracts visitors from far and wide. Renowned for a vibrant mix of arty and alternative types, Fremantle is abuzz with the songs of buskers on sidewalks and a wild collection of art, lively restaurants, historical pubs and stylish microbreweries. The food and restaurants display the city’s multicultural

diversity, with a strong Italian influence amongst the Asian, Indian and many other kinds of cuisine to be found amongst Fremantle’s winding streets. For the most popular seafood restaurants in the state, be sure to make it down to the colourful Fishing Boat Harbour.

Also not to be missed are the vibrant weekend markets, for all the freshest of fruit and veg as well as eclectic stalls and entertainment. With around 50 boutiques crammed into Market and High Streets, avid shoppers will be delighted by the independent and innovative fashions of Fremantle’s quirky shopping precinct, where young and emerging designers are choosing to launch their stunning new lines.

And the fun is just beginning. A short distance north from Freemantle, you can continue your coastal holiday by exploring Cottesloe and Scarborough. Blending beach activities with wining and dining, it doesn’t get much better than this.

And if you truly want to getaway amongst the natural wonders of marine and island life, make sure you visit Rottnest Island. The perfect place to forget the world, Rottnest Island will complete your stay in Perth.

Rottnest IslandRottnest Island is a unique region of natural beauty and wonder with unspoilt beaches, spectacular flora and abundant marine and wild life.

Rottnest Island is Western Australia’s very own island getaway. Being a Class A Nature Reserve, public vehicles are not permitted on Rottnest Island. The conventional way to exploring is on a bike, or if riding is not your style you can walk around or use the regular bus service. Transfers to the island operate from Barrack Street Jetty in Perth’s city centre, Victoria Quay in Fremantle, Rous Head in North Fremantle and Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth’s north. There are plenty of activities to enjoy

on the island such as fishing, boating, golfing, a family fun park and a wellness centre. The main Thomson Bay settlement area has several dining establishments where you can enjoy a good meal. There is a snorkel trail at Parker Point, marked with underwater interpretive plaques containing information about the marine environments surrounding Rottnest. The island is the southernmost point along the Western Australian coastline where coral can grow. Seasoned divers can explore the 13 submerged shipwrecks that slumber off the coast. Information plaques can also be found here alongside the wrecks, which can be visited by glass-bottomed boat, or by scuba diving and snorkelling. Rottnest is also renowned for surfing, so bring your board!

Perth CoastAs the day draws to a close and the setting sun sinks into the gleaming Indian Ocean, it becomes perfectly clear why this area is known as the Sunset Coast.

With the white sandy beaches stretching from Mandurah to Two Rocks, there are few cities in the world with a coastline that can be compared with the capital of Western Australia. Located only 20 minutes west of the city centre, you can hire a car, catch a bus or join a tour to explore these beautiful beaches.

COTTESLOEOnly 9kms from Fremantle and 12kms from Perth city, Cottesloe is one of the few beaches in Western Australia with ocean side cafés and pubs. Public transport is also nearby with the beach accessible via train and regular bus services. The long stretch of bike path along the beach is perfect for cycling, jogging or just strolling along the coast of the Indian Ocean. Afterwards, grab a coffee or cold beer at one of the many bars and cafés that dot the waterfront. The distinctive avenues of Norfolk Island pines, the colonial style splendour of the Indiana Tea House and the Spanish-style Cottesloe Civic Centre with its magnificent gardens all add to the culture of ‘Cottes’. Generations of Western Australians have spent summer days and evenings diving into the Indian Ocean from the distinctive floating bell in the ocean at Cottesloe Beach.

Fishermen line the Cottesloe Groyne and surfies and board riders line the Indian Ocean either side of the Cottesloe Groyne. The wide grassy Cottesloe Esplanade offers shady spots for family picnics and concerts are held there. Some nearby attractions are as follows:Historical Graves Walk Trail Karrakatta Cemetery, Railway Road, Karrakatta. The first walk of a proposed series of historical graves walks is now available at Karrakatta Cemetery. Maps of the walking trails are available from the administration building at the main entrance to the cemetery. Alternatively, download maps at www.mcb.wa.gov.au/OurCemeteries/Karrakatta/HistoricalWalkTrails.aspx.Minim Cove Stone Street, Perth. Archaeological discoveries in the 1960s indicate that Minim Cove was an Aboriginal tool-making site dating back ten thousand years. During early settlement, travellers disembarked by ship. Point Walter Point Walter Road, Bicton. Point Walter is where the locals go on weekends for riverside picnics, swimming and fishing. This scenic reserve boasts sweeping views of the Swan River and is the perfect place to barbecue with friends and family. There are plenty of shady trees, public barbecue facilities, a café, kiosk, jetty and boat ramps. The river at Point Walter offers excellent family swimming and is often used for dive training courses. There’s also a public golf course just nearby. Also not far from Point Walter is the Blackwall Reach Reserve, a picturesque area of natural bush ideal for cyclists and walkers. Point Walter is located in Bicton, a 15 minute drive from Perth CBD.

One minute you’re in the city of Perth, surrounded by skyscrapers, the click-clack of commuter heels and the roar of motorway traffic. Hop in your car, head east and, 25 minutes later, you’re in another world: winding down quiet roads, a seemingly infinite landscape of lush, green vines before you.

Roadside stalls sell fresh-picked produce: plum, juicy strawberries, fat figs and fiery red tomatoes, depending on the season.

Signs point left and right to winery after winery – some sleek, some rustic – inviting you in to sample crisp, clean whites, full-bodied reds and the region’s famous fortifieds. And that’s just the start of the trail.

Welcome to the Swan Valley, home of the oldest vineyards in WA. Most of these vintage vines, the first of which were planted in 1830, are still family owned, run by descendants of pioneering viticulturists with generations of winemaking in their blood. As a region, the Swan Valley is surprisingly compact. However, those embarking on this scenic loop, known as the Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail, generally take their merry time. After all there is more than just wine to swill. The area contains some of the finest restaurants in the state, as well as breweries, distilleries, art galleries, wildlife parks, and a slew of hands-on activities on offer. With so much to see and do, try and taste, you’ll be pressed for time. Don’t worry, WA’s oldest wine region isn’t going anywhere: as the sun sets on full bellies and wine-soaked lips, you can always come back for another round tomorrow. For more information on Swan Valley, please contact the Swan Valley Visitor Centre on 9379 9400 or visit www.swanvalley.com.au.
