Imagine the Possibilities

Innovations are available to transportation agencies through a variety of programs, including SHRP2 and EDC2. These innovations:

• May be applied individually or in combination with products from different programs.

• Are easy to learn more about through Websites, Webinars, demonstrations, and peer-to-peer programs.

• Are supported by funding and assistance opportunities that can help your agency quickly and confidently apply innovations to current challenges.

Freight Demand Modeling and Data Improvement – C20

ChallengeCurrent freight planning and forecasting tools, data, and techniques are inadequate to support infrastructure planning that integrates the complex logistics practices of the freight industry.

Solution • Documentation and data required for

effective freight modeling, data collection, and decision making.

• A strategic plan to advance improvements in freight planning; promote continuous innovation; and foster a collaboration between all stakeholders.

Behavior-based Freight Model:Implementation Requirements

Freight model should represent supply chain behavior (selection of suppliers, shipments, transfers, mode) for different industries.

Freight model should represent touring behavior for pick up and deliver of goods within a region (MPO only).

Freight model should be able to reproduce observed data, such as truck counts, rail, air, and water volumes (where relevant).

A willingness to develop case studies to demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of advancing freight modeling practice.

Implementation Assistance:Innovations in Local Freight Data Pilot

Why this Focus?…Why Now?Overcoming Challenges…..• Inconsistency of data across different modes of transport

(rail versus highway versus air cargo versus intermodal);• Need to manipulate data collected for other purposes in

order to incorporate or expand the data for modeling purposes;

• Limitations in the local applicability of national data, which typically result in less than robust tools;

• Matching the type and format of local and national collection efforts
