Filoxenia, the Greek word for ‘love of strangers’, is still a way of life in rural Crete where the hospitality of its people is legendary.

Fringed by long sandy beaches and rocky coves, the surprisingly green but frequently rugged scenery is splashed with patches of wild flowers and haphazardly scattered with Minoan palaces, mosques and minarets of Venetian and Turkish conquerors. A surprising number of unspoilt areas have yet to be discovered by mass tourism, where you can dine in the local taverna for astonishingly low prices.
