SUPPORT THE FTHS PTO

[email protected]

The PTO provides many valuable services to the Patriot community. In order for it to continue its work volunteers are needed to serve on

the executive board and some committees. Please consider volunteering even if you on-ly have an hour or so a month to contribute. Every effort, no matter how small, helps the PTO achieve its goal of providing support for the students, parents and faculty of FTHS. Remember without the PTO there would be no Senior Banquet, Refreshments and Assistance at Conferences & 8th Grade Orientation, PTO Scholarships, Teacher Appreciation Week Program and Teacher Grants.

We all need to do our part in supporting the efforts of this great group. Please take time from your busy schedule to invest in your child’s education by attending the PTO meet-ings held at 7:00 P.M. the second Tuesday of each month in the school’s Media Center. The PTO Executive board would like to wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB)

Students are invited to enroll in our International Baccalaureate Diploma

Program. The IB Diploma Program is an interdisciplinary, college preparatory and internationally rec-

ognized course of study for students in 11th and 12th grade. Students would also follow a recommended

course of study in 9th and 10th grade to ensure their preparedness for the program. Freehold Township

High School is one of only 16 high schools in New Jersey that offers this highly respected program.

IB learners strive to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded,

caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. Students with these traits thrive in the dynamic, interdisci-

plinary, and student-centered IB environment. The Diploma Program prepares students for college and

life and work in an increasingly global society as they:

develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically;

acquire breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, studying courses from six subject groups;

develop the skills and a positive attitude towards learning that will prepare them for higher education;

study a foreign language and increase understanding of cultures, including their own;

make connections across traditional academic disciplines and explore the nature of knowledge through

the program’s unique Theory of Knowledge course;

undertake in-depth research into an area of interest through the lens of one or more academic disci-

plines in the extended essay;

enhance their personal and interpersonal development through creativity, action and service (CAS).

Students who are interested should contact the IB Coordinator Mr. Michael K. Dillon at

[email protected] to learn more about the program and how to enroll in this course of study.

Web Design Program Coming To FTHS

There is a new and exciting opportunity for Freehold Township rising 10th graders (current 9th grade students) to

enroll in a Web Design CTE (Career and Technical Education) program for the fall of 2019. This three course hon-

ors sequence will equip students with skills in computer languages, creative design, and business practices of web

design. They will also participate in Structured Learning Experiences that will

include field trips and job shadowing. The three courses culminates in the ability

to earn three credits from NJIT.

IMPORTANT DATES AND INFORMATION FROM THE HEATLH OFFICE

All medications administered by the school nurse require a physician’s order and parental consent form to be submitted to the health office. These must be resubmitted each school year. Students are not permitted to carry any medications on them with the exceptions of an asthma inhaler, epinephrine by auto injector along with a dose of antihistamine and insulin. Specific medication forms for life threatening conditions must be submitted to the health office. We also ask that your child not spray perfumes in hallways or classrooms as many people are sensitive to sprays and it can trigger asthma and allergic reactions. If your child had a life threatening allergy, asthma, seizures, diabetes or any other serious medical condition, paperwork is required to attend trips and participate in sports. Physician’s notes are required to excuse a student from Physical Education class. The student should bring the medical note the Health Office when they arrive at school. Notes should include a diagnosis and length of time that the student is restricted from activity. Students will not be permitted to return to Physical Education class until clearance is obtained from a physician. If your child is in health class, it is still important for the Health Office to have documentation of your child’s injury. Your child will be excluded from school for a temperature of 100.0 or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, and other signs of contagious illness. Your child may not return to school until he/she is fever free for 24 hours without the use of any fever reducing medication, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, and has not vomited or has not had an episode of diarrhea in 24 hours. Students who are not feeling well must report to the health office so parents or guardians can be contacted. Students are not to contact their parents via cell phone to be picked up because of illness unless they are in the health office. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ATTENDANCE AND CREDIT WITHDRAWAL POLICIES & PROCEDURES

Mastering course proficiencies requires regular attendance in school. The purpose of the attendance policy is to improve student attendance and thus enhance student learning and achievement. Early warning of excessive absences and cuts from class will help to alert parents and students and thus encourage improved attendance and avoid withdrawal of credit for the course. The chart below

provides the schedule of parent notification, interventions and consequences of excessive absences.

Students who exceed the maximum number of absences or cuts for a course MAY NOT receive credit for the course and receive a grade of “W” for the marking periods and a WAT, for the course. All absences are counted towards credit withdrawal, including those documented with notes. Absentee notes must be submitted by parents within 48 hours of the student’s return to school. If an appeal is requested the Faculty Attendance Review Committee will meet with the student and parent/guardian to review the case and determine whether credit should be reinstated. Reinstatement of credit will only be granted for extenuating circumstances such as a documented chronic illness.

Important Traffic Reminders

In an effort to promote safety and facilitate the smooth flow of traffic in the lot, all persons

dropping off students in the morning are directed to do so on the gymnasium side of the school.

As a reminder, when dropping off, you must pull all the way down to the second entrance door.

Afterwards, please proceed with caution all the way around the parking lot to exit.

It is important during this process that you do not park in the student lot, cut across the parking

lot rather than driving all the way around, or

attempt to drive around cars that have stopped

curb-side to drop their student off as each of these

practices would pose a safety hazard.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation!

leafy greens in our greenhouse. Those greens will be sent to the 5 Star Café at Freehold Boro to be used in their

menu. Juniors have begun exploring global food insecurity, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and plan on

sharing their research at the Global Youth Institute at Rutgers in March.

STUDENT VOICES

FTHS continues to excel in the Asbury Park Press's "Student Voices" monthly essay contests. Thus far, in 2018, there have been several winning entries. In October, 9th graders Julia Rutt and Mackenzie Brown received 3rd place and Honorable Mention, respectively. In November, senior Kelly Beuka received 1st place and freshman Olivia Naum received Honorable Mention. Finally, in December, seniors Kelly Beuka and Stephen Crafton-Temple received 3rd place and 2nd place, respectively. We look for-ward to celebrating our students’ continued success!

Students Bake for the Needy

Students in the Creative Foods and Food Science & Nutrition classes as well as members of the FTHS

FCCLA chapter were busy baking during the month of December. While learning the basics of baking,

students made cookies, gingerbread houses and quick breads to donate to a local organization, Feed

All God’s Children, an open door lunch program headed by Jim Benedict. The non-profit organization

is open during lunchtime Mondays through Thursdays feeding hundreds of clients. Approximately

thirty-five platters were donated in the hopes of bringing cheer to many people this holiday season.

FTHS PEP students delivered these items to the soup kitchen.
