A visceral, luminous novel about a Métis woman tracing the life and death of her son.

One late September day, amid the year’s first snowfall, the winter child is born. He does not breathe. His mother watches helplessly until “at last the baby uttered a first tentative croak like a frog unsure of spring’s arrival.”

Then again, and again, and again, the winter child narrowly avoids death’s reach. But his mother knows: “he would be her wound, she would have to battle to keep him with her, to defend him against the worst of all enemies.”

Originally published in French and told through alternating and overlapping memories, Winter Child is a powerful meditation on grief and life. With a poet and storyteller’s language, Virginia Pésémapéo Bordeleau traces a mother’s journey from devastation to strength, descending to the darkest inner depths, and finally finding the generosity of life and love.

Virginia Pésémapéo Bordeleau is an internationally recognized visual artist of Cree origin. She has published three novels and two poetry collections in French. She lives in Abitibi, in northwest Quebec.

Lorna Crozier is the award-winning author of sixteen previous books of poetry, most recently The Wrong Cat. She is also the author of The Book of Marvels: A Compendium of Everyday Things and the memoir Small Beneath the Sky. Born in Swift Current, she now lives on Vancouver Island.

“New poems by Lorna Crozier are always a reason for rejoicing.” — Globe and Mail

In her newest collection, Lorna Crozier describes the passage of time in the way that only she can. Her arresting, edgy poems about aging and grief are surprising and invigorating: a defiant balm. At the same time, she revels in the quirkiness and whimsy of the natural world: the vision of a fly, the naming of an eggplant, and a woman who – not unhappily – finds that cockroaches are drawn to her.

“God draws a life. And then begins to rub it out / with the eraser on his pencil.” Lorna Crozier draws a world in What the Soul Doesn’t Want, and then beckons us in. Crozier’s signature wit and striking imagery are on display as she stretches her wings and reminds us that we haven’t yet seen all that she can do.

Peter Unwin was born in Sheffield, England, and raised in Southern Ontario. A writer of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, his work has been nominated for the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and the Trillium Book Award. He lives in Toronto.

A quirky, comical and provocative novel… complete with robotic flying chickens.Following a dramatic break-up with his long-suffering wife, Jack Vesoovian retreats to a Hamilton rooming house, where he impulsively decides to take to the road to track down his life-long colleague, Petronius Totem.

Petronius Totem has disappeared following the unlikely success of his memoir, Ten Thousand Busted Chunks, praised for its searing honesty. But when it is discovered to be a pack of lies, Petronius Totem becomes universally despised.

Meanwhile, Jack faces another grim truth: the world is being taken over by a sinister multi-national Fibre-Optic Catering business that has created a chicken-like food matter than can actually fly. Can he and Petronius Totem escape into a virtual future that is free of Chick Lit and flying fibre-optic chickens? Or will Jack return home to his wife Elaine whom it seems, with good reason, will shoot him on sight?

Searching for Petronius Totem is a love story for the age: a wild, imaginative, and utterly original novel.

and consequences of adoption. And it’s more than this.”

Winnipeg Free Press

“It’s a book that doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges of

“There’s hope in the art of Olivier, whose line drawings

evoke the work of R.O. Blechman. Though much of the

work — some old, some produced for the book — is

bleak, he infuses a remarkable amount of humour and
