Lachlan began his apprenticeship in Metal Engineering while still at school at St Patrick’s College, and now rests easy in the knowledge he’ll be fully-qualified when job opportunities in submarine construction are booming.

1. What’s the best thing about learning as a school-based apprentice? I’m getting experience, getting paid, and still getting my Year 12 qualification. Having the apprenticeship done and dusted early will also be really good. Working and balancing school can be challenging, but the teachers definitely help to make sure you’re on track.

2. Why did you choose a career in metal engineering? I’m a light sheet metal fabricator. I’m piecing together switchboards, welding and tapping for the largest switchboards company in Australia. I would like to work on submarines and will be fully-qualified by the time that work begins in South Australia.

3. What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship? I would highly recommend it. I’ve already got a job, I’m going to get my SACE—I’ve really got nothing to worry about.

Lachlan Marie

A second-year electrical apprentice at SA Power Networks, Marie enjoys the fact her work contributes to the state’s power supply.

1. What’s the best thing about learning as an apprentice? You get paid to study, with a good chance of getting a job at the end of it. I did the uni thing for a while, but I wanted something more—I really wanted to get out there and use my hands. The apprenticeship is a good balance of getting that study but being able to put it straight into practice. It’s so diverse and that’s what I love about it.

2. Why did you choose to become an electrician? It’s pretty cool to know you can provide power to people, hospitals, the whole state. There are so many different areas you could end up working in. There’s the opportunity for away work too, which is appealing to me.

3. What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship? I’d highly recommend getting into a trade. I would never have known how much this suited me if I hadn’t given it a go.

After rigorous screening, about 7,000 of them go on to become a member of the Australian Army, Navy or Air Force. However, among the many of those who do not progress into the ADF are people of diverse skills and commitment who uphold the values and importance of protecting the nation’s security and that of our allies. The opportunities for them and others – from school leavers to more mature workers seeking new career directions – are vast and diverse in businesses from multinationals to small, specialised local enterprises that support the roles and objectives of the ADF.The Defence Teaming Centre (DTC) is a national member organisation with a powerful focus on enabling and supporting Australian industry to develop capability and overall competitiveness in domestic and global defence markets.Almost 300 businesses including prime defence contractors and small to medium enterprises are members of the DTC, along with academic institutions and professional service providers, who also supply and support ADF capability. The Careers and Employment Expo is featuring a combined display by the ADF and Defence industry demonstrating the clear synergy and strategic alliances between the organisations that protect the nation’s sovereignty and security.Audra McCarthy, Chief Executive Officer of the Defence Teaming Centre, said the Federal Government’s strategic focus was on shifting the acquisition process from overseas off-the-shelf equipment and platforms to developing our own sovereign design and manufacturing capability. That means building the capability and capacity of our own Australian businesses and accelerating the expansion and potential of its workforce.

The powerful workforce & academic institutions supporting Australia’s defence capability

Each year about 30,000 people apply to join the Australian Defence Force.

The Workforce behind the Defence Force offers careers in Defence industry that span high-end engineering and integration, design and development, advanced manufacturing and precision componentry, electronics and through life support and facilities construction.

Ms McCarthy said the multi-billion dollar Future Frigate and Future Submarine programs demonstrate Australia’s commitment to becoming a sovereign ship building nation and developing our own design and construction capacity to support the ADF.

She said people interested in supporting Australia’s defence interests could do so in a wide range of civilian roles from trades to advanced engineering and science.

Visiting the collaborative display at the Careers and Employment Expo will showcase the connection between industry and the ADF in a dedicated defence hub. Among the exhibitors are major companies including BAE Systems Australia, Saab, Babcock and Naval Group, along with smaller specialised local businesses supporting the ADF with world-class capabilities.

It provides a unique opportunity for people and companies to gain information on entering into and maintaining on-going business with the ADF.

People can also learn about opportunities to enrol in the Naval Shipbuilding College based in Adelaide.

The college will work with key stakeholders to ensure a suitably skilled and qualified Australian workforce is available to meet industry's needs in delivering Australia's continuous sovereign naval shipbuilding program.

Set yourself up for success with the ADFJoin the Australian Defence Force at the Adelaide Careers and Employment Expo to

see where your technical skills and interests could lead. Talk to current serving women and men about their careers and how they’ve set themselves up for the future.

If your ambition is to acquire recognised trade qualifications and work on sophisticated equipment in varied environments, where no day is the same as the last, a career in the Australian Defence Force might be for you.Every role in the ADF comes with a great starting salary, the potential to travel and have some truly amazing experiences. Technologically savvy Australians can learn skills in the Navy, Army or Air Force to expand their capabilities and interests far beyond opportunities available in a civilian workplace. You could find yourself on board a ship working on advanced weapons systems or deployed on operations, responsible for maintaining vital military vehicles and equipment. Petty Officer Matthew Cace, an Avionics Technician in the Royal Australian Navy, says his job has helped him to live out his dream of travelling the world. His day job involves working on the Navy’s state-of-the art helicopters that are critical to Navy operations, delivering supplies, personnel, resources, and defensive capability.“I was drawn to the Navy because of the technology we get to work on from helicopter’s electronics and avionics, through to weapons systems, training systems, sonar, radar, flight control, radios and communications,” PO Cace said. “The highlight of my career so far was my deployment on Operation Sumatra Assist, in the wake of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. “I was deployed for four months on board a ship working on aircraft and helping the local population to recover. “The technical qualifications and life lessons learned throughout a career in the ADF set our tradespeople up for future careers, potentially far beyond their original role. “You’re always learning, adapting to new technologies and working in a highly fluid environment which requires you to problem solve and think on your feet. “I am enjoying a rewarding career in the Navy with the knowledge my skills and qualifications position me for future careers outside the ADF.”PO Cace is attending the Adelaide Careers and Employment Expo and is looking forward to sharing his experience. He says it was talking to a serving ADF member that led him to join the Navy.

“With an extraordinary variety of trades and technical professions on offer, there is a career option to suit everyone in the Navy, Army or Air Force and we’re here to help you work out the one that is best for you,” PO Cace said. The Australian Defence Force will have an interactive, virtual reality display at the Adelaide Careers and Employment Expo to provide a taste of ADF life. Upon completion of an apprenticeship, graduates are awarded a nationally certified qualification meaning that career paths can be pursued in diverse fields and locations, or even provide the option of working holidays.Unlike university graduates, people coming out of apprenticeships are not burdened by higher education contribution scheme (HECS) fees that can run into thousands of dollars. The Apprentice Employment Network (AEN) South Australia is a great place to start inquiring about the benefits of group training. This is an arrangement where a body, known as a Group Training Organisation (GTO), employs apprentices and trainees and places them with “host employers” until apprenticeships or traineeships have been completed.AEN SA is a network of independent, not-for-profit organisations located in Adelaide and major population centres throughout the State. In South Australia, GTO's account for about 30 per cent of all entry-level apprentices. Nationally, over 100,000 businesses have used a GTO to manage their apprentices and trainees.GTO's are active in most industries including automotive, construction, electrical, plumbing, engineering, horticulture, community services, retail, hospitality, business administration and more.

They have far reaching connections with employers, government agencies and Registered Training Organisations.Young people considering apprenticeships or traineeships will benefit from an initial discussion with AEN SA representatives at the Careers and Employment Expo.“It can be difficult for school leavers and others to know where to start,” said AEN SA Executive Officer Troy Aitken. "Our GTO's have vast industry experience and contacts and they can provide expert advice on apprenticeship or traineeship opportunities to help you achieve the career and lifestyle you desire. If you enter into a group training arrangement, your GTO will ensure you are placed with a suitable host employer for the length of your apprenticeship or traineeship. The GTO will maintain the quality and continuity of your employment and training and manage additional mentoring and support necessary for you to successfully complete your training contract. “If you have exceptional talent, you may be recognised through GTO State and national awards schemes and participate in career development and leadership programs."

To find out more, visit the AEN SA display at Sites 70 to 76.

But, according to personal branding, recruitment and human resources expert, Marlene Cole, things have changed significantly in resume requirements that will impress a prospective employer.“The huge majority of Australian job seekers are using old template-style resumes that do not get through the competitive process that will lead to an interview,” she explained.“The biggest change in resumes is that one size doesn't fit all. You must adapt your resume for each job application and there are key elements that must be addressed.“Grabbing a resume template off Google or Microsoft Office is the biggest mistake people make. Don't do it! “If you are applying for jobs and hearing nothing, your resume is not working.“The new generation careers resume has a targeted headline, key word section and clear, quantifiable bullet points that will create a first impression foothold, show that the job seeker takes their career seriously, and demonstrate the value the person will bring to a company.”Marlene said job seekers often required the support of a professional career practitioner to help them develop the resume and presentation skills they need to get noticed.

Free Resume Workshops Most job seekers start their quest for employment by completing a resume outlining

their qualifications and personal attributes, then look for a job.She has been writing resumes and LinkedIn profiles along with interview and job coaching for more than 15 years. On both days of the Careers & Employment Expo, Marlene will present informative hands-on workshops to create winning resumes that meet what recruiters are looking for when seeking successful job candidates. As an international multi-award winning resume writer, she has written resumes, performed job-search coaching and prepared candidates for interviews ranging from entry level to executive positions. This includes first time job seekers, people seeking to advance their careers within their current employment, and others looking for a complete new career path.“I am passionate about helping people develop the career tools needed to get noticed and on the path to workplace success,” Marlene explained.
