FRUIT TREESColorado can be a wonderful place to grow fruit trees such as apples, pears, peaches, plums, sweet and tart cherries, nectarines and apricots. Many of the fruit trees do very well because of Colorado’s ideal climate of warm temperatures with low humidity. Some of the important factors to consider when purchasing a variety is tree hardiness, later bloom time, and disease susceptibility. A few varieties that perform well and are carried by Spencer’s Lawn & Garden are Honeycrisp apple, Montmorency cherry, and Pix Zee miniature peach. Apples are one of the more reliable fruit trees in Colorado due to the fact that they bloom later than many other fruit trees, and many are hardy to zone 4 or 8,000 ft. Honeycrisp is one of the most popular varieties because of its good growth and great-tasting fruit. It’s hardy to zone 3 but needs a pollinizer such as Red Delicious, Granny Smith, or McIntosh.One of the hardiest sour cherries is Montmorency, and it is known for the sweet-tart flavor of its bright red fruits, which are great for pies. It also is one of the later blooming fruit trees which helps ensure consistent fruit set each year with our late spring frosts. It is hardy to zone 4 and is a self-pollinizer, but can also be used to pollinate other sweet cherries. One of the most popular fruit trees at Spencer’s is the Pix Zee miniature peach; it’s a dwarf tree getting about 5 feet wide by 5 feet tall. Peaches can be a challenge in Colorado because they one of the earlier fruit trees to bloom, but unlike the more common peach trees that can get larger and therefore are harder to protect from late spring freezes. At the dwarf size of 5’X5’, it’s easy to cover (with a frost blanket) and protect this smaller tree from some of the later spring freezes that we get. When this tree is in bloom it puts on quite a show with its clusters of bright double-pink flowers, that turn into an abundant crop of fruit for such a small tree. They are medium-sized fruits with a nice sweet taste. But get there early because this is always the first tree to sell out!

Grass Seed

Bird WhispererThe world opens its doors when you find your passion. I was blessed to have those doors open for me several years ago. In an attempt to bring some of the beauty of nature and wildlife to my home, I turned my backyard into a Certified Wildlife Habitat. My love of wildlife and birds in particular quickly grew to a love of photography. I started taking pictures of the birds in my habitat just to keep a record of the varieties I see. It wasn’t long before I got my first camera to try and capture the birds that stayed farther away in my yard.

Today, my passion has become all about the birds. I currently write a weekly column in the El Paso County newspaper called “The Birds of El Paso County.” I was given the name “Fountain’s Bird Whisperer” by the newspaper and it quickly caught on. I never dreamed that a love for the birds in my yard would grow to writing a weekly column and now giving talks at our local nature center on raptors and classes on backyard birding tips.

All of my photos are of wild birds and never captive. I spent countless hours following raptors and all my images are local to El Paso County. Some images are taken from my own wildlife habitat of the wild birds that come to visit. I am blessed to share this passion with others!
