E-PortfoliosWhat is an e-Portfolio?
An e-Portfolio is a collection of documentation of a student’s progress, submitted by a
student. The e-Portfolio is updated by both teacher and student. Documentation can
include word processed documents, presentations, scanned hard copies, videos of
the student presenting or participating in a group setting, and/or screen shots of a
student’s work through web-based programs.

E-PortfoliosIs the tool web-based or computer-
based?
The tool can either be web-based (a subscription bought through a website, like TaskStream.com,
eportfolio.org, or a personal website built through a blog host, like WordPress.com). An e-Portfolio can
also be computer-based, which would mean creating and maintaining a “folder”, and continually adding work that has been electronically submitted via e-mail or USB flash drive. In fact, an e-Portfolio
can be kept solely on a USB flash drive, and continually updated. It would be suggested to have
a back up of the e-Portfolio though.
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 5
E-PortfoliosWhat does the tool cost?
If the school decides to set-up web-based e-Portfolios, through TaskStream, a student would pay an average of $20. If the teacher is requesting this of his or her students, an average
cost would be $50 a student. TaskStream provides 500 MB of storage space.
Another web-based e-Portfolio host is eportfolio.org. When signing up, an organization would pay $29 for a minimum of 150 profiles. As the amount of profiles increases, the cost per user
decreases. The subscriber is paying for only 100 MB of storage per profile, which may last for a year of school, but will not
provide documentation long-term.If the teacher is requesting a web-based e-portfolio, students could also keep websites, hosted through a blogging website,
such as WordPress, and pay nothing. The site has a 3 GB storage capacity. If the average size of a word document is 50
KB, 60,000 word documents could ultimately be stored.If a teacher is requesting a computer-based e-Portfolio, a
student could keep a USB of his or her work. To fully address a student’s need, a student could make a one-time purchase of a 32 GB USB, and pay an average of $60. By having such a high capacity of storage, the student would not be limited to the type
of file saved.
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 6
E-PortfoliosWhat data does the tool produce?
The data produced is a chronicle of student’s progress through one year of schooling, as most
students change teachers, and sometimes schools. If the student stays in the same school
district, a district could ultimately produced data for twelve years of education. If the student chooses to continue the e-Portfolio, they could have their
entire education from kindergarten to their doctorate chronicled!
The hope would be that a variety of files are kept to show student progress, such as word
documents, presentations, scanned hard copies, and/or videos of group interactions, projects,
and/or presentations.
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 7
E-PortfoliosHow can this data be used to drive
instruction and to differentiate?
As the student and teacher compile the e-Portfolio, the teacher can track the student’s progress, and
create assignments that will drive the student towards success.
As some students do not need re-teaching or additional resources, the teacher can individualize for each student based on the need. Section 508 students can also have documentation for their IEPs, and allow for any alternate assessments. If a regular or special ed student continues to
struggle with a concept, the teacher has documentation to show improvement, even if it is only in small measures, and motivate the student, parent, and/or the next teacher(s) who will help the
student towards success.

Integrated Learning Systems
What is an integrated learning system (ILS)?
• An integrated learning is a computer- or Web-based system that assesses individual students to determine their ability levels in certain content areas. After the initial assessment, the ILS then creates, delivers, and adjusts, instruction, assessments, and learning content according to student need (NCREL 2004)
• The system provides feedback, data, and progress updates to students and teachers to inform about the mastery of content.
• Integrated learning systems can be used as a formative assessment tool.

ALEKSAssessment and Learning in Knowledge
Spaceswww.aleks.com
Overview
ALEKS is a Web-based integrated learning system (ILS) that offers instruction and assessments for numerous subjects areas. Although several college-level subjects are offered by the system, its main content is math for grades 3 – 12 . The K-12 content correlates with state standards (UC Regents & ALEKS Corporation, 2011). ALEKS can also be used for RTI (Aronowitz 2010). It can also be used for supplemental or remediation purposes. The system is for individualized learning.
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 20
ALEKSCost:
• The price of ALEKS varies according to the length of the subscription. For K-12 institutions, the price ranges from $40 per student for a 12 month subscription to $20 per student for a 1 month subscription. The company offers varying lengths of subscriptions at varying prices. ALEKS also offers independent subscriptions with prices starting at $19.95 per month.
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 21
ALEKSWhat data does the tool produce?
• After the initial assessment, the system produces pie charts for each student. The pie charts show the areas in which the student will be required to focus. It also shows areas that have and have not been mastered.
• Teachers can view data by individuals or whole classes. The data includes student progress, logins, performance, time spent in system, topics worked on, and topics completed. It shows content history and content ready to be started.
• Administrators can view school and district progress towards meeting the standards.
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 22
ALEKSHow can this data be used to drive instruction and
to differentiate?
• ALEKS is adaptive to student needs and drives instruction according to assessment results. Teachers can gain information about student weaknesses. Note: ALEKS does not use multiple choice questions.
• Students can work at their own pace on areas in which they need help.
• Teachers may have students work on the system as the sole independent curriculum.
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 23
ALEKSHow can this data be used to drive instruction
and to differentiate? (Continued)
• Teachers can print out worksheets based on need.
• Teachers can create quizzes.
• Teachers may intervene with the lessons or offer alternate methods of teaching and practice when necessary.

All data derived is valuable in that it allows the teacher to know if reteaching a concept is needed or if it is time to move on.
Small group and peer tutoring could be one way that this information could assist in setting up a lesson plan.

Personal RespondersData Can Drive Instruction
• Standards Driven Instruction – Most responders are programmed to
accept the importation of state standards into the system
– Within the database of the responder system software, will be questions that can be used as a formative or summative assessment.(“CPS TMIr | eInstruction, “ n.d.)

Personal RespondersData Can Drive Instruction
• Modify lesson during instruction– Based upon answers to short
questions, the teacher can determine the level of mastery of each student. (Ferriter, n.d.)
– The teacher can use this data to determine whether to re-teach or move forward. (“CPS TMIr | eInstruction, “ n.d.)
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 44
Personal RespondersData Can Drive Instruction
• More Student Involvement– Students will not be afraid to give an
incorrect answer.– Since the students can anonymously
answer questions, they will be more likely to stay engaged in the lesson or activity. (Ferriter, n.d.)
– This could lead to increased student discussion with all students actively participating in the lesson.

• More Student Involvement– Students will feel more confident as they
ask questions about things they don’t understand and will seek a deper understanding (Ferriter, n.d.)
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 46
Personal RespondersData Can Drive Instruction
• Student Meta-cognition– Because students are less concerned
about being embarrassed by an incorrect answer, they will seek a deeper level of understanding.
– They will begin to learn how they learn and take responsibility for their own learning. (Ferriter, n.d.)

Personal RespondersData Can Drive Instruction
• Teacher Benefits• Because teachers have the benefit of the
assessment results; they can differentiate lessons for their students. (Educational systems design, inc., 2010)
• Data collection time is greatly reduced. The system/software collects the data, records the data, and analyzes the data leaving the teacher more time for working on lesson planning. ("CPS™ IR | eInstruction," n.d.)

Personal RespondersData Can Drive Instruction
• Teacher & Student Benefits• As teachers have concrete assessment
data from the responder system, they gain more confidence about their ability to adequately assess students. When student assessments are accurate, lesson planning is more on target with student needs. (Ferriter, 2009)
