So, we’ve reached year 2020. It doesn’t quite sound right yet does it? It almost feels like I’m talking about a futuristic movie featuring hover cars, holograms and silver clothing…

Anyway, a new year can be a breath of fresh air for some, to make a change, a New Year’s resolution and improve yourself in some way. But for others, it’s just another month – and that’s totally OK too.

For those thinking of New Year’s resolutions however big or small, here’s a few ideas: • Save money: Christmas can be pretty severe on the old purse/wallet, so why not skip dining out for the month, make meals at home, watch movies, play boardgames, take walks in the park and spend time in with the family.

• Healthy eating: Some of us overeat over Christmas, (I mean isn’t that what we’re supposed to do?), if you feel like you’ve had one too many mince

pies, stock up on soups, salads and smoothies for that lighter feeling. (Once you’ve finished off all your Christmas leftovers of course)

• Self-improvements: Exercise, learn a new skill or hobby, dye your hair that colour, practice self-love and focus on what makes you happy.

• Travel: Make travel plans however big or small, create something to look forward to.

• Give: Do something nice for someone else, give to charity, help someone in need, litter pick in your area, do that thing that you’ve always wanted/intended to do.

A very Happy New Year to all our readers!

Saturday 30th November saw East Leake Light up with the Christmas Light Switch on along with an array of other fantastic festivities organised and supplied by local businesses in the community.

The village event began at 11am with a Christmas craft fair, a 2k Santa Fun Run, award ceremonies, a visit from Santa, choirs, a nativity and a selection of great food and drink, then later the big countdown that lead to the East Leake Lights

Switch On. What a brilliant day of entertainment and fun for all ages, ending 2019 on a high.

Congratulations to the winner of the Local Community Award winner, Conrad Oatey.

Members of the East Leake Traders Association came together to put on this great community event, with local businesses supplying many of the food, drink, events and activities that were on offer throughout the day.

There were different stalls from hook a duck, Santa’s grotto and mulled wine being served at different shops around the village.

The Young Enterprise students from East Leake Academy were also there selling Christmas gifts made out of recycled bottles. Santa’s team came from Elaps (East Leake Amateur Players) drama group.

Previous weather forced Physioneeds to sadly cancel part of the Santa fun run, but the 2k

run still pulled in an impressive 93 participants raising an incredible £420 for Prostate Cancer UK.

The East Leake Traders posted a lovely thank you message on their Facebook page shortly after the event which said, “A big thank you to everyone who turned out in the cold and foggy weather yesterday.

“It’s so lovely that the village comes out and joins in the celebrations and our beautiful village is twinkling once again for a month.

“This wouldn’t be possible without all the help of our volunteers so to all the traders, non-traders council volunteers, Elaps (the drama group), craft fayre organisers, runners, Sleigh drivers, Leakie and our MC Tracey Waterfield a big big thank you.

“By supporting your local village shops and businesses not just at Christmas but the rest of the year enables us to put that extra effort into making all this possible. East Leake is one of the best places to live! HAPPY FESTIVE SEASON

With the weather being what it has been for the past couple of weeks (months...years), it’s no wonder climate change and the state of our environment has been on everyone’s minds.

After the forest fires in the Amazon, there’s been a sudden surge in awareness of the importance of trees, as a method of carbon reduction, source of biodiversity, and means of flood prevention. People are asking politicians to step things up, and Youtubers are raising millions of pounds to plant new trees.

So, we at the guides were wondering how we could help, in our own small way.

“When a fellow guide leader mentioned that we could apply to the Woodland Trust for community trees for our group,” said Wendy Thompson, Leader at the Second

East Leake Guides Unit and Tree Warden, “I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to bring guiding and the community together and to teach the younger generation about the difference trees can make to both the environment and the community.”

Environmentalism is a core tenet of the modern Girl Guides. From reusing materials, learning about how to be a conscientious global citizen and getting involved in the local community, it was a natural fit.

“Trees are important because they photosynthesise which produces oxygen which we breathe,” wrote East Leake Guide Freya, when creating a poster on the importance of woodland (pictured right), “If we didn’t have leaves, we would be dead! Leaves also make our trees look even prettier and provide our community with colour.”

With trees supplied by the Woodland Trust, support from the parish council and the East Leake Tree Wardens, and a good surge of manual labour from the girl guides and the wider village community, we’ve planted 200 new trees in East Leake, that we hope will grow into a wonderful part of the village that will be with us for many generations!

Thank you to everyone who turned out to lend a hand!

If you’d like to learn more about the girl guides, either as an opportunity for your daughter, or you would like to volunteer as a unit helper or leader, you can find us online

08 The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.comNEWS

During the end of 2019, Nottingham and the East Midlands was victim to a great deal of rain causing road floods, overflowing rivers and muddy banks.

On 13th November East Leake Animal Rescue Unit was called to a large 17 hand horse that had gotten trapped in a flooded ditch. Exhausted and cold, the horse struggled to free itself and was in need of help.

A member of the rescue team said, “After initially clearing an exit by cutting back trees and giving a better footing we tried numerous times to coax Chloe out.

“Unfortunately, due to the cold and being very tired she could not quite get herself out so after some sedation from a local vet we

set up horse strops and lines and managed to haul her up the steep, muddy bank with the assistance of a tractor.”

“About fifteen minutes later Chloe was back up on her hooves and enjoying a snack with friends!”

Well done to the East Leake Animal Rescue and to everyone else involved for this fantastic community effort in saving Chloe.

Chloe the horse saved from a sticky situation Your recycle point in East LeakeRecycling and environmental issues are at the forefront of news at the moment, encouraging us to take care of our planet. In a bid to encourage mindfulness of our waste, it’s important to be aware of what you can recycle but also where you can. East Leake Parish council have put a request in for a new sign on Main Street as it was bought to their attention that some residents were unaware of where it was. For those of you who don’t know, the East Leake recycling centre is infact located in the Co-op car park, here you can recycle glass and cardboard as well as unwanted clothing, textiles, tetra packs and your shoes.

The popular May Day festival is returning to East Leake after a break of 4 years and this one promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

As many of you may already know, this year’s May Day festival has been altered slightly from its traditional 1st Monday in May to Friday 8th May. This is to coincide with the 75th ‘Victory of Europe’ (VE) day celebrations. So if there ever was an excuse to re-start the popular May day event, a national party seemed like as good a reason as any.

The UK government hopes that the VE day celebrations will actually be a weekend long celebration starting on the Friday and they have employed a Pageant Master to coordinate Parish Councils and organisations nationally in some coordinated events, including national church bells being rung at 3pm and toasts to the nation.

The East Leake Scouts will put on a traditional May Day event with games, local events, Maypole dancing, May Queen, food, local produce and more on Gotham Road Recreational Ground. They’re working on a few ideas at present to add to his popular format. The May Day festival will then morph into a VE day celebration with the help of the Parish Council delivering music, food, drink and fun in coordination with the national celebration plans.

The Scouts will be contacting local organisations and businesses who may wish to be involved in the celebrations and with the Parish Council, put on a day to remember.

The East Leake May Day Festival is to return in 2020!

Governors at East Leake Academy, part of the Diverse Academies Learning Partnership, have announced the new principal for the secondary school.

Blake Francis, who has been acting principal since September 2019, has been successful in securing the role on a permanent basis and will continue to lead the academy to create a positive learning climate for its 1,040 students.

Mr Francis, who has worked at the academy for almost 10 years, took over the reins at the start of this academic year and has already navigated the school through a

successful Ofsted visit as well as implementing a new strategy around behaviour and standards. His substantial experience and knowledge of the academy comes from working over the best part of a decade in leadership roles including deputy head of faculty, head of year, assistant principal, and most recently, vice principal for teaching and learning.

Mr Francis completed his PGCE at Loughborough Uni and started teaching in 2005 before joining East Leake Academy in 2010.

He said, “The support that staff, students and parents have shown me since taking on the role temporarily in September has been heart-warming and inspiring. Seeing everyone working together during this time, to move the school forward in such a positive way, has made securing the position of substantive principal at East Leake Academy a very proud moment.”

BYGONES

Nottingham already boasted the ugliest thoroughfare in Europe with the completion of Maid Marian Way and then an outright winner for the ugliest building in the city emerged in the slab of concrete that became Broad Marsh shopping centre. As its equally unloved bus station and car park finally bit the dust recently, JAMES BINNEY notes its passing, without regret.

THE familiar cacophony of synchronised bulldozers, a cavernous site cordoned off by corrugated iron, hastily erected

metal fencing and cardboard panels proudly portraying a vision of a brand-new tomorrow or else promoting the wrecking crews dismantling the vestiges of yesterday that were once those very same promises of a brighter future.

Such a scenario is nothing new to readers of this paper or indeed anyone of a certain age or generation. The almost daily sight of a city being disrupted, disturbed and demolished has been a somewhat sad and often squalid saga that has dominated the

landscape locally over the decades.

Simply put, on a pro rata basis, Nottingham has suffered more than any of England’s larger cities, even smaller as well.

And yet the more recent avalanche of falling masonry and sunlight penetrating anew through a once blockaded skyline surely represents a change for the better. Or at least change, better can only be a matter of opinion and then fact once the passage of time reveals all.

There can be little doubt how some of our local treasures have been mourned once buried beneath a pile of bricks and mortar rubble but no one seriously can shed a tear for the passing of the Broad Marsh bus centre and car park...

Good Riddance, Broadly Speaking Times They Were a'Changin'His entrances on the big stage were heralded by a fanfare of publicity and a media frenzy which, while the daily and mostly unwarranted fawning fodder of the modern game, was far from commonplace in 1970s football. But then Brian Clough was always ahead of his time and big news, even when he walked into a pedestrian, parochial and decaying club 45 years ago this month. Things were about change, however. And how. DANNY KIRKWHITE recalls events before and after Old Big ‘Ead’s arrival at the City Ground.

Brookside Primary School teachers were once again out braving the elements in the Big Sleep Out.

The event, which was held on Saturday 23rd November 2019 at the City Ground, saw 12 members of the Brookside teaching team sleep rough in what was cold and wet conditions.

In the week leading up to the event, children from Brookside designed and helped create cardboard shelters for the teachers. The

added dimension of rain this year, meant that the cardboard had to have a waterproof coating (mainly tarpaulin) put over the top of it.

The event itself was challenging yet ultimately rewarding. The conditions brought home to the teachers what life would be like living on the streets, and all have stated how hard it must be for those who sleep rough night after night.

The evening was buoyed by the arrival of three Nottingham Forest

players: Brice Samba, Tobias Figueiredo and Tiago Silva, who had returned to the City Ground following Forests game at Ashton Gate in Bristol, earlier in the afternoon. These players spent time talking to the teachers and commenting on individual shelters.

The purpose of the event was to raise vital funds for Framework, a local charity based in Nottingham. A staggering £1700 was raised by the Brookside staff, an achievement they are really proud of.

Brookside Primary teachers take part in Big Sleep Out Recycle for charityRecycle your small electrical items at your local Recycling Centre during January, and for every tonne, Veolia (Nottingham County Council’s waste contractors) will donate £5 to Motor Neurone Disease Association, the chosen charity of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Chairman. Veolia have even promised to donate an additional £500 bonus to the Motor Neurone Disease Association if the total reaches 500 tonnes by the end of January 2020!Putting small electrical items in your bin at home means the valuable components will be wasted. Feel good this new year by recycling them instead and at the same time raise money for a great cause! Every year an estimated 2 million tonnes of electrical and electronic waste items are discarded by householders and companies in the UK. Recycling helps everyone, it is easy to do and protects the planet for future generations. For further info visit www.veolia.co.uk/nottinghamshire/RecycleForCharity.

Nine members of John German Sales and Lettings recently took part in a charity sleep out to raise £5,000 to support homeless young people in the UK.

On the 21st November, a team from John German, organised by Propertymark, slept out at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in London, as part of Centrepoint’s Sleep Out. The dedicated team began fundraising before the event, and thanks to the generosity of colleagues, friends, family, suppliers and customers raised £5,000 for the charity which supports 15,000 homeless young people a year. Forming part of a collective of fellow agents and suppliers with Propertymark, over £62,000 was raised from the Sleep Out in London.

Centrepoint offers practical on-the-ground support to homeless people age 16-25, focusing on providing a safe place to stay and the building blocks for an

independent life. As the UK’s leading youth homelessness charity, they operate 60 services across the UK helping vulnerable young people with accommodation, health support and life skills to get them back into education, training and employment.

Taking part in the Sleep Out

James Morgan, Owner Director, John German, who took part in the event commented, “When Martyn Baum, Director of John German in Loughborough and East Leake approached me to ask for us to take part in the Sleep Out for Centrepoint with Propertymark, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Being property agents, I feel a real affinity towards this cause. Homelessness is a big issue in the UK, the more we can do to make a change the better.”

With this in mind, a team from John German including James and Martyn, along with Katy Storer, Aidan Reed, Sarah Hill, Lucy

Beck, Charlie Lockhart and Josie Walker signed up to take part in the event and started fundraising straightaway.

Katy Storer, Marketing Manager, John German, who also took part in the event commented “We made fundraising a company wide effort by getting 60 plus staff members involved from all 10 branches, hosting two mini-fundraising events (best dressed branch for Halloween and a cake sale) and a charity auction at our Lettings Landlord seminar. Thanks to the generosity of friends, family, clients and suppliers, we raised an astonishing £5000 plus gift aid. The Sleep Out itself, albeit very cold and wet, was fantastic, extremely well-organised and put together. A highlight for me, was hearing from those who have experienced homelessness and

how Centrepoint helped turn their lives around. The work Centrepoint do is vital in making a change to homelessness in the UK.”

James concludes “The support we received has been fantastic. Not only did everyone from John German get behind us, so did all our friends and family, customers and suppliers. Thank you, the generosity is going to make a huge difference to the work Centrepoint carries out.”

Although the event is over, John German are hoping to raise further funds for Centrepoint. To show your support, donations can still be made via John German’s Just Giving campaign page which you can find online at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sleepoutlondon2019-katystorer

Friends of Meadow Park are a forward looking and enthusiastic bunch of people. Currently our membership stands at nearly 200 and we hope that more will join this year. Volunteers have given their services in a number of areas. Here are a few examples:

• Working with the Forest School children • Keeping Hall Field under control • Maintaining bird and bat boxes • Planting bulbs, wildflowers and trees • Working on the log circle and tarpaulin supports for Forest School • Hedge laying and maintenance • New fencing along Bateman Road boundary • Conservation work

In January last year willow trees along Kingston Brook were found to be diseased and were cut down, others were pruned and this has helped keep the Brook clear of debris (fallen branches etc). An outdoor gym was put in Play Field in the summer and has proved to be very popular.

The Meadow Park Stollers Thursday afternoon walks in the park have proved very popular again this year. The walk is now a recognised Health Walk as part of the Rushcliffe move and Mingle programme. They have four leaders and meet at the Millstone on Thursdays at 1.30 pm for their thirty minute stroll.

The Santa Fun Run on November 30th was successful. There were 93 runners who raised £384 for Prostate Cancer UK. More photos available on Facebook.

A volunteer (Gwen) does a survey of the wild flowers every month. A total of 82 different flowers were recorded over 2019. The highlight

of the year was the profusion of cowslips which have spread to most areas of Meadow Park.

Butterfly monitoring (Kevin) in the park was limited in 2019, largely as a result of the early mowing (which should not happen again). There was a total of 21 species of butterfly recorded in the park, albeit in low numbers, with the highlight being the sighting of two Painted Lady butterflies on 28th June. We are making great efforts to increase the habitat for these lovely creatures and continue to plant wildflowers and shrubs.

Our finances are very healthy as we have members’ subscriptions and donations (£743) donations from our boxes in village shops and gifts from East Leake Dog show organisers (£913). We also had very generous donations, totalling £280, to the Arboretum sponsorship fund. There was a very generous grant from British Gypsum of £400 which was used to refurbish the notice boards and buy plug plants. However the major news for 2019

was due to the hard work put in by Alan Barlow who obtained a grant from the Notts County Council local Improvement Scheme. This funding is split between NCC and ELPC and is for a total of £28,608 (£14,308 each). This has been used to improve the accessibility within the park. We spent £305 on nest boxes, wild flower seeds and plants; £311 on plug plants and wild flower bulbs; £301 for news trees and associated equipment. Though our resources are small we manage to do a lot to improve the Park. In 2020 any funds we raise will go towards new fencing, weed control mats (around trees and shrubs) and a bench. No doubt other things will crop up that need spending on and we will take them in our stride.

For more information on the Friends of Meadow Park, visit the village website (www.east-leake.co.uk) and look under ‘organisations’ or visit Facebook. Membership per year costs £3 for an individual or £5 for a household.

December and January are the months when all homes have their heating on for winter, and supercharge their energy bills. To help residents across the City and County, Notts Switch, Save and Smile are launching their 3rd collective switch campaign to take the hard work out of finding special deals and switching energy supplier. Local charity Nottingham Energy Partnership, together with iChoosr, and Local Authorities encourage households to sign up and use people power to secure a cheaper energy deal.

If you’ve been thinking about switching, but have not had the confidence or time, we’ll guide you through the process. What have

you got to lose? It’s completely free, simple and quick for you to sign up, and there is no obligation to switch.

Notts Switch, Save and Smile is part of the nationwide Big Community Switch bringing thousands of people together who want a better energy price – with average annual savings of £230.

Over 14,000 households have already registered – it couldn’t be easier to join in!

How do I register? Visit www.nottenergy.com/switchsavesmile or call 0115 784 6696. Make sure you have a recent annual statement to hand.

Miranda Cumberbatch from NEP said, “Three out of four UK households are still overpaying for their Energy – this is an easy way for people to switch from expensive deals."

Registration closes February 11th.

An air source heat pump is usually placed outdoors, it takes heat from the air and boosts it to a higher temperature using a heat pump. The pump needs electricity to run, but it should use less electrical energy than the heat it produces.

Take a look at our graphic below.many air source heat pumps are eligible for payment through the Renewable Heat Incentive, a scheme that provides payments to homeowners who generate their own heat. An Air Source Heat Pump

works a bit like a refrigerator in reverse. Consisting of an evaporator, a compressor and a condenser. The ASHP absorbs heat from the outside air into a liquid at a low temperature, then the heat pump compressor increases the temperature of that heat. In the condenser, the hot liquid’s heat is transferred to your heating and hot-water circuits. So it warms up your home.

A woman is celebrating after losing half her body weight and winning a Golden Slimming Award.

Debbie Millband from Clifton has lost a life-changing 9 stone to win Slimming World’s ‘Club 50’ Award – which has been specially-created this year to celebrate the company’s 50th birthday – and is awarded to those members who have lost an incredible 50% of their starting weight.

Debbie, who’s gone from 17st 1.5lb to 8st 1.5, says: “I’ve been overweight for over 35 years, since having my children. I’m so proud and happy to win this award, especially in such a monumental year for Slimming World.

“I feel like a new woman since losing weight – in fact, I look so different that people who I haven’t seen for a while often can’t believe I’m the same person. For me though it’s the change on the inside that’s been the greatest – I’m happier, healthier and much more confident now, My arthritic pain

especially has been vastly reduced and has therefore greatly improved my mobility.”

The 60-year-old joined the Clifton British legion group, which is run by Sacha Patchett, in February 2013. Debbie says: “My weight impacted on so many aspects of my life, from struggling to find clothes that I like to fit, to not being able to do simple everyday tasks without feeling tired

and out of breath. Before I lost weight, I hated having my photo taken and whenever I saw pictures of myself, I didn’t feel like my smile was real.

“Since then I’ve made so many friends at the group and I honestly don’t think I could have done it without their support each week.

“I still enjoy all my favourite meals like burgers and chips and roast

dinners, but I’ve learned how to make small changes like using lean meat or cooking with low calorie spray instead of oil or butter. It fits in so well with the rest of my family and we can all eat the same meals.

Today Debbie’s lost a total of 9st and went from dress size 24 to a size 8. She’s also more active nowadays and regularly walks to the shops and enjoys walking in the countryside with her husband.

You can find your local group in Clifton, East Leake, Ruddington and Gotham on the Slimming World website - www.slimmingworld.co.uk/nearest-group-search.

Sacha, Meg, Marion and Yvonne are all ready to welcome you into your local Slimming World group to help kick start your journey.

Prograss are in perfect shape to take on all eventualities in 2020. The business has everything in place to make your lawn the envy of your neighbourhood. Customer capacity has increased with the addition of another van and skilled operator enabling them to cope easily with any additional business that comes their way.

Another exciting development is that Tony Grice, owner of Prograss, will also be joining forces with Joe Hegarty in a business partnership to launch PROJET which will be a relaunch of Joes company EPC and offering a wide range of external cleaning services such as patio, drive, block paving, guttering, render, conservatory and roof clean. If you would like a no obligation quotation on any of these services then please call us on 01949 837367.

The mechanical machinery which is hollow tine aerators and scarifiers have all been serviced and new tines and blades have been fitted to ensure this side of lawncare is done

to the highest of standards.

Fertiliser technology has moved on leaps and bounds with the latest products being extremely safe and environmentally friendly. Modern day slow release fertilisers gently leak nutrients into the grass and soil at controlled rates that ensure no wastage or over feeding occurs. Prograss are overlooked by a qualified agronomist who makes

sure we are using the best products that are available today.

Weed control has changed significantly over the last few years with a lot of products quite rightly being banned as they were not environmentally friendly and potentially harmful to wildlife. Prograss only use the safest products available and these are diluted down to levels that will only

control lawn weeds and not affect anything else. Great care is also taken by our qualified operators not to over apply when spraying ensuring less wastage occurs.

Finally at Prograss we always say what the customer does with his mower is as important as what we do with our lawncare services and good cutting habits are essential to making sure your lawn has the best chance of maximising its potential.

Winter is a good time to sharpen the blades on your mower to make sure it is ready for Spring. If you take a look at the picture here, this is the lawn of one of our customers who takes great care when cutting his lawn and you can see the results clearly.

If you would like to give Prograss, Nottinghams premier, independent lawncare company a chance to show you what a positive difference they can make to your lawn in 2020 then please give them a call on 01949 837367 or visit them at their website: pro-grass.com.

A new year is upon us. This usually brings with it changes in the landscaping industry. So what are those likely changes that you can expect in 2020?

Garden design is becoming more complex as customers strive to maximise their gardens potential. This requires larger budgets, so we have noticed a big uptake on our virtual 3D garden design service since we launched it last year.

Customers are wanting to fully understand their project before progressing with the practical investment of building their dream gardens. For these reasons, this form of garden design will become more usual than the traditional CAD design.

Life also seems to be becoming ever more stressful. People are discovering how therapeutic being outside can be, having fresh air and relaxing in a quiet part of their garden. Developing a quiet space is set to increase, be it only a private space for a bench. It seems to me

that every gardening programme is eulogising about the benefits that your garden can provide you and that certainly is a trend we are experiencing.

The other major trend is a desperate need to help with climate change and species extinction. Having worked outside all my life I can tell that both are happening, which is a great worry. There are things that can be done that everyone can help with. Some of them very small and at no cost.

For instance, leaving a small gap under a fence for hedgehogs. Even putting out a hedgehog box or stack of sticks. Creatures like hedgehogs need territories, so fences are obstacles that prevent viable territories.

Planting a tree such as a mountain ash that provides shelter and berries for birds, or a buddleia for butterflies.

These are all small but positive changes that will provide you with a natural delight. Obviously more

than that needs to be done, but even these small changes can produce a better corridor that helps the local wildlife.

The trend of outdoor living is set to continue, with a greater range of outdoor kitchens, fire pits and with ceramic paving increasing its market share even further.

May we take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and healthy 2020.

At Duncan Ross, we have been transforming and building high quality gardens locally since the year 1990.
