How much do I order?Its better to have too much rather than too little you dont want to be on the phone ordering pizzas when your guests have cleared your platters and are looking for more food! So, work out in advance how much food youll need. As a rough guide, allow 4-6 pieces per person per hour, so if youre expecting 10 guests and the party is going to last three hours, serve up 120-180 portions. See page 34 for our party planner with some fantastic combinations of platters.

Mix it upIts tempting to order all your favourite foods, but remember that your guests might include vegetarians, expectant mothers, or kids, so you need to have a range of veggie, fi sh and meat options. Sainsburys platters cater for everyone if you order a variety youre bound to please and therell be no need to rummage through your cupboards to fi nd alternatives.

TIP Ask friends or family to help out handing round platters of food do one circuit of the room, then put it on your table to free up time to mingle.

How does it work?Sainsburys offers a free glass loan service. Simply visit our Customer Service Desk in store, pay a 20 deposit (which you will get back when the glasses are returned) and you can borrow the glasses for up to seven days. Choose from tumblers, pint glasses, wine glasses and champagne flutes.

*Conditions apply: pay a 20 deposit, order the glasses at least 48 hours in advance, or even earlier if its a popular party weekend, like a bank holiday. We charge a small fee per glass for any breakages. Speak to a colleague at the Customer Service Desk for more information.

Best party whites Any wine you serve needs to be really easy-drinking, so Italian whites are always a good choice as theyre crisp, light and citrussy. Try Winemakers Selection by Sainsburys Pinot Grigio with its delicate peach and almond notes its a great match for party nibbles.

Best party reds Similarly with reds, choose a smooth and fruity wine like our Winemakers Selection by Sainsburys Montepulciano dAbruzzo with its vibrant red cherry flavours, its bound to be a crowd-pleaser.

Just rightNo one wants to run out of drinks at their party but you dont want to waste money by buying too much either.

A 75cl bottle of wine contains 6 small glasses of 125ml, so you need to consider the size of your wine glasses. Dont forget that Sainsburys offers a glass loan service see page 32 for more information.

Wine boxes are great for parties as they contain 2.25 litres of wine, the equivalent of 3 bottles, and are easy to use with their own tap. They also keep wine fresh for 6 weeks after opening, which is great if you have bought too much as it wont go to waste.

Most spirits bottles are 70cl, and one unit or shot is 25ml, so you can get 28 serves per bottle. Or consider buying 35cl bottles so you can have a wider selection of drinks. Standard mixers to have in the fridge include tonic water, soda, cola, lemonade and fruit juice, which also make great non-alcoholic drinks for non-drinking guests.
