Simply Plan …

Planning is largely about budgeting, writing down a grocery list, and

strategy at the store. Never run out of money at the end of the month again!

Simple ways to keep track? The Envelope Method is tried and true.

Separate bills into those that are paid online, by check, or in cash. Include in

the cash department envelopes labeled “gas” for gas, “food” for food, etc.,

and put the cash in the appropriate envelopes. Then pull the cash out of the

right envelope to pay. Need I say more? It’s elementary, but it’s a quick way

to find who the real paycheck hogs are.

My Budget Monthly is another helpful tool, an Excel worksheet bonus

available through “101 Ways to Get More From Less” that lets you input your

real expenses and real income, and automatically updates when you change

the numbers so that you always know what’s happening. Pretty fascinating!

Simply Shop …

At the store, following a few easy guidelines can save a ton of hassle!

1. Make a shopping list. After writing down your meal plan for the week,

and checking to see what’s in the cupboard, make a list of everything

else you need to buy at the store.

2. Don’t shop hungry. Eat something first. This tip alone can save $$$ at

the checkout. When we’re hungry, we’re not brain-engaged, and

anything goes, absolutely killing the budget!

3. Compare unit costs. Isn’t it frustrating to see $2.99 for one thing and

$1.99 for another, but they’re different weights, and not easy to find

the best value? Just look at the unit cost under the item. Items are

broken down into cost per pound or ounce. Now, it’s easy to decide.

Simply Cook … (in 4 minutes or less!)

BREAKFAST:

1. Yogurt, raisins (any fruit), & nuts, mixed together

2. Sliced cheese on toast

3. Granola bars (or ½ c. instant oatmeal microwaved in 1 c. water

for 3 minutes) and pre-boiled eggs

LUNCH or DINNER:

1. Baked potato (microwave 4 minutes) & toppings (butter, yogurt,

cheese, onions, bacon bits, etc.), and a pickle!

2. Tuna “boats:” Tuna fish with a little mayonnaise and relish

wrapped in spinach, cabbage or lettuce leaves.

3. Corn-on-the-cob (microwave 3 minutes in the husk, then shuck

the husk), cottage cheese and pickled beets.

4. Fish fillet & Veggie tray. Microwave prepackaged fish fillet 1-2

minutes in its packet. Dip fresh veggies (cucumber, green pepper,

tomato, broccoli, baby carrot, etc.) in dressing of choice.

5. Ramen surprise: Cook Ramen in water in the microwave for 3

minutes. Drain the water, and then add spaghetti sauce, or

cheese, or mixed veggies, or all three.

6. Pizza Quickies! Spread spaghetti sauce on toast or English muffin,

add grated cheese & toppings, and microwave 30 seconds.

7. My personal “On-the-go” favorite: Any previously-cooked meat

or bean leftovers. It’s “FREE” to me when it’s already made and

incredibly EASY to wrap in a tortilla and go!
