About Fredericton

Fredericton is the Capital of the Province of New Brunswick located in the Maritimes, which includes the provinces of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. Fredericton is within an hour’s drive to the U.S. Interstate 95 - the major American north-south corridor; within a day’s drive of Halifax, Toronto and New York; less than an hour away

from Saint John - the region’s busiest seaport; and just a fifteen-minute drive from the Fredericton Airport.

Fredericton has a high concentration of knowledge industry companies, four universities and the fourth highest university-educated population in Canada. More than 60 R&D organizations, emerging growth clusters in bio sciences, clean technology, and aerospace & defence, and the most engineers per capita in the entire country. As the provincial capital, Fredericton is also home to many government departments.

The majestic St. John River runs through the heart of downtown, providing beauty and green space. Fredericton has more than 88km of walking trails, and 3076 acres of parkland within city limits. You’ll find engaging history, world-class art galleries, gourmet delights and Maritime friendliness in perfect balance.

Our PopulationThere are over 322,670 (2006) people living within a 100 km radius of the capital city including Fredericton. The Greater Fredericton Region has a total population of 124,172 (2006), and Fredericton's Census Agglomeration (CA) population in 2011 was 94,268.

Our WeatherFredericton is located inland from the Atlantic ocean. As a result of this, it has higher summer temperatures and lower winter temperatures than New Brunswick coastal locations such as Saint John and Moncton. Fredericton has a semi-continental climate with a warm summer and a cold winter. Snow depths of 1+ cm are seen approximately 105 days each year.

Did You Know?Situated along the scenic St. John

River, Fredericton was originally inhabited by the Maliseet and Mi’kmaq who hunted, fished, and grew crops. Intermittently for 100 years, the French and English fought for ownership of Nova Scotia, which included the City of Fredericton. It was not until 1784 that the area north of the Bay of Fundy was known as New Brunswick. Early Fredericton industries included mills, a canoe factory, tanneries, carriage and wagon manufacturers, breweries and broom factories. In the 20th century, the city’s industries evolved to universities, reinforcing Fredericton’s education and cultural centric feel.

Notes: *City receives the revenue.  The 1.5 represents the business tax rate.  The property tax rates apply to all properties (land and buildings) within City limits, per $100 of assessment. Depending on zoning, the City generally pays the $2.1229 Property Tax Rate above, or the Residential Rate of $1.4767.  Non-owner occupied residential properties are taxed at the residential rate of $2.8378 plus 0.05 cents Residential Tenancy Administration Fee, for a total of $2.8878.  The combined tax base assessment 2013 over 2012 was increased by 4.95%.  The base used for 2013 to set the tax rate was $6,392,645,032 including Federal properties.

Non-residential tax rate:  *The Province of New Brunswick levies a property tax on non-residential property within municipal boundaries.  As you can see, a development in the downtown core pays a total rate of $4.4545.  Of that total, the City collects $2.1317, or 48% of the total tax charged.  The Province of New Brunswick collects the majority of tax in the form of the Provincial Tax Rate, i.e. $2.1035 + 0.0194 = $2.1229 per $100 of assessment.  The BIA levy of 0.20 is a tax imposed upon the downtown businesses by themselves.

For tax assessment or payment related tax inquiries, please contact the Province of New Brunswick - Service NB at: www.snb.ca or 1-888-762-8600.

What is a Smart Grid?An intelligent, self-monitoring, highly automated power supply network that can be better controlled than a conventional system.

It is equipped with innovative information and communication technology, in order to enable end-to-end data flow from the generator to the consumer and in the other direction.

Whereas in a conventional supply network generation follows the pattern of consumption, a Smart Grid controls consumption depending on the available of electrical energy in the network.http://www.siemens.ca/web/portal/en/Press-Archive/Infrastructure-Cities/Pages/Siemens-Canada-opens-smart-grid-centre-of-
