H appy Second Week of Advent. Though it may seem impossible, I hope we continue to pledge our strongest resolve
to “slow down” and await the coming of the Lord. Advent is a wonderful time to hit the pause button. I pray we
will hear “the voice crying out in the dessert, to prepare the way of the Lord, to make straight his paths.” As the holiday
parties begin in the weeks to come, let’s remember to celebrate the season of Advent.
Our parish community suffered two big losses this week. Mary Louise Keegan died at the age of 90. Mary Louise
was 90 years old and died peacefully at Glade Valley Nursing Home in Walkersville. Mary Louise, though of a modest eco-
nomic background, was one of our top offertory givers and supportive in so many ways here at St. John though often in a
quiet way and behind the scenes. She was a very good friend to Sr. Margaret. For many years she paid for all of the veteri-
nary expenses for Kyrie, Fr. Wayne’s dog who was cared for by Sr. Margaret after his death. I want to offer prayers for the
repose of the soul of Mary Louise and send prayers and sympathy to her niece Mary Ayer, who is also here in the parish.
The second loss is both to the parish and indeed all of Frederick County with the death of James “Doc” McClel-
lan. Doc, as he was affectionately known here in town, served in the European Theatre of Operations and received 3 battle
stars for action in France, Belgium, and Germany. Upon his return to the United States he married Betty Jane Marendt and
together they were blessed with six children, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Betty, who until recently was a
faithful member of our parish, was truly one of our pillars of our parish. She was active in and regular attendance until her
health, and Doc’s decline, forced them to relocate to Buckingham’s Choice in Adamstown. Doc was a very well respected
veterinarian here in Frederick, first with his father and later on his own. He was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to
serve two terms on the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. He was named Veterinarian of the Year in
1979. Doc also had a very active political life having served as a member of the Frederick City Board of Aldermen and the
President pro tempore of the Board. He later was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates where he served tirelessly
for 16 years. He worked on such projects as the Weinberg Center, the Delaplaine Center, Frederick Community College
Library and the Carroll Creek Linear Park which created the flood control program for downtown Frederick. Our prayers
and good wishes to Betty and her children and grandchildren and our deepest thanks to this incredible public servant.
I mentioned recently that our Capital Campaign will be delayed until 2017; fear not, we have not given up, simply
modified the timeline. This schedule change now means we can resume our annual stewardship drive. The campaign which
is being discussed this weekend at all the Masses is entitled “Take the Next Step”. I encourage you to prayerfully consider
how you can help us continue our incredible legacy which includes our historic campus and vibrant family of faith by
“taking the next step” in your sacrificial giving to the parish.
Blessings on your Advent Season!

Students in our high school youth ministry program recent-
ly hiked to Chimney Rock in the Catoctin Mountains, led by
Director of Youth Ministry Meghan Sprankle. At the summit,
they talked about “verso l’alto,” or “to the heights,” a phrase
used by Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. It describes not only
the heights of a mountain, but also reaching the height in
our relationship with God. To the heights– to the Eucharist
which is the source and summit of our faith as well as the
constant striving to reach the summit of our relationship
with God and our final destination of Heaven. It was a chilly
day but a great chance for the group to get to know each
other in the beauty of nature and over some pizza at
Rocky’s in Thurmont!

Start a New Family Tradition This Advent
by Kelly Bothum
In an age where we can get just about everything we desire in an instant, Advent is wonderfully old-school.
It’s four weeks of pressing pause, which is not like hitting the snooze button. Instead, it’s a chance to re-engage with those we love and joyfully prepare for the Christmas season. It’s taking a breath amid the chaos and seeing what’s really around us.
We may hit the mall to look for the perfect pres-ent, but have we really thought about the greatest gift given to us by God? We race to get up the Christmas lights, but do we set aside time to think about the true light of the world?
Advent gives us that, week by week. So how do we do it? As parents, we need to create
opportunities for this mindful pause. Here are a few ideas to consider:
—Enlist some help with the Nativity scene. This is the perfect opportunity to remind children about the real hero of the season—and it’s not the guy in the red suit.
Having kids help with the Nativity scene gives parents a chance to talk about everyone’s role in the story of Jesus’ birth. Children can see themselves in the lowly shepherds and the three Wise Men, and they can certainly imagine how challenging it must have been for Joseph and Mary.
Some families like to up the anticipation ante by hiding the baby Jesus figurine and making a game of finding him on Christmas Eve. Other Nativity tradi-tions include sending the Holy Family statues on a trip throughout the home until they are reunited in the manger. Adding a piece of straw to the empty manger each day during Advent also can help little eyes see the changes that develop from all this waiting.
—Make a Jesse tree. My kids know about their family history through stories and old pictures we share. It’s a big part of what makes them feel connected to rela-tives they have never met.
During Advent, a Jesse tree can show us what a family tree of our Catholic faith looks like. It teaches children about the people in Christ’s own family while also introducing some of the Old Testament stories that lead up to Jesus’ birth.
What makes the Jesse tree particularly cool is that kids can create their own decorative symbols taken from stories about Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, John the Baptist, and others. Plus, any ornament made by a kid instantly becomes a family treasure.
—Celebrate feast days during Advent. We’re waiting for Christmas, but we can still have some fun. Several feast days during Advent offer the chance to celebrate before the big day.
First up is St. Nicholas Day (Dec. 6), which is celebrated by having kids leave their shoes out to be filled with treats. The feast of Our Lady of Guada-lupe (Dec. 12) is a great time to celebrate Mexican culture and also talk about the ways God can sur-prise us in our lives—in this case, by having Mary appear to a poor man. The feast of St. Lucia, or St. Lucy, (Dec. 13), whose name means “light,” offers a timely opportunity to take a tour of the neighborhood Christmas decorations.
—Find the light around us. It’s simple, but lighting the Advent wreath is one of my favorite traditions.
We keep the wreath on our dining room table, and each Sunday my kids fight over whose turn it is to
2
light the candles. (I could do without the fighting, but you get the idea.)
What I do like is just how deeply invested my kids feel in this tradition. We keep the candles lit through our meal, and it’s amazing how this simple glow warms our family dinner—much like the light of Jesus warms our soul.
This time of the year, frankly, I need the pause that Advent provides. So do my kids, who have been
waiting for Christmas since they shed their Halloween costumes and dove headfirst into the candy.
It seems we are always in a state of anticipation, waiting for the next phone upgrade, the next sequel, the next big thing that’s going to change our lives. This year, let Advent teach us who truly is worth waiting for.
