Although the structureitsel was saved thanks to theaggressive eorts o the menand women o the MiddletownFire Department (assisted by three other companies), theFletcher amily lost nearly ev-ery possession they owned.Word o their needs spreadrapidly throughout our com-munity, primarily because o the extensive, next-day cover-age by your newspaper, andthe people o Middletown re-

Dan McDermottFrederick County Report

Like most journalists, I was sad-dened to hear o the passing o CBSlegend Andy Rooney.

o many young people, Andy wassimply that cranky old guy who reada short essay at the end o the newsmagazine your parents watched ev-

ery Sunday night. But he was so much more.First and oremost a writer, Andy

was never comortable in the me-dium that made him so amous. Buthe was transparent about that, be-ore ‘transparency’ was cool.

Andy didn’t like being recognizedand he never signed autographs --except in his books, o course.

I never met Andy but like millionso Americans I knew him rom hiswriting and television work. I know what he represented to Americanmass communications at a key time

o change.

Aside rom the act that he wasclassy, smart and a great writer, what really made Andy special tome was that he was one o the last o the people who were part o the be-ginning o television. He was part o that group o journalists and writerswho had to gure out how to taketheir long-orm radio programs andperorm them under a camera andlights.

In a lot o ways, those o us ininternet programming are goingthrough the same transition.

Leo Laporte’s Wi.tv networkstarted out as a group o ormerech V hosts sitting around a ew microphones and chatting about

technology news.People listened and the show be-

came a hit. Ten Leo added cam-eras and some lights and recently a million dollar studio. But it is stilllargely an audio show that happensto be available on video.

Many decades ago, when radio

was king, a young writer or CBSnamed Andy Rooney went throughthe same technology shit. He spokeabout it during a lengthy 1999 in-terview with Don Carleton or theArchive o American elevision:

“Tis was a period during whichtelevision was born. I wake up somemornings and I say I am old enoughto have been in on the beginning o television... At CBS, [Arthur] God-rey was radio, an hour and a hal o radio ve days a week. And thenCBS started ooling with television, and quite early on color televisiontoo.

“But it was black and white [then]so they talked Godrey into letting

cameras into the radio studio. Itwas nothing. It was [a money] loss.Tey gured, ‘Well we might as wellbroadcast this radio show.’

“Well gradually, o course, televi-sion crept in and the income rom itrose and they put lights in the studio

specically designed or television

and gradually the radio disappearedand the television came to the oreand the rst thing you know it was

Last week saw the Sherando War-riors shocked in deeat, standing in adriving rain and watching their op-ponents celebrate the upset victory.Tis past Friday saw a very dierentscene enacted in Arrowhead sta-dium, as the overjoyed high schoolWarriors hoisted the coveted Ap-ple Cup, a trophy dedicated to twoFrederick County legends and viedor each year by the our FrederickCounty teams.

Te Warriors deeated Milbrookto claim the Cup, as well as a shareo the district championship, nish-

ing their season at 7-3 and earning aspot as the third seed in the regionalplayos that begin next week. TeMillbrook pioneers ought hard and valiantly and several times the gamelooked to be in doubt, but or themajority o the evening the War-riors dominated behind seniors likeJoe Ojo, Jalen Brisco, and re Porter.Te Warriors achieved the victory, deeating Milbrook 36-6.

When the clock winded down totriple zeroes, the players stormedthe eld and as the Apple Cupwas brought out, several playersswarmed the man holding it. Teireagerness was understandable andtheir coaches soon had them backwith their teammates to await the

presentation o the trophy in a moredignied manner. When the trophy was presented, the players huddledaround it bouncing on their eet andscreaming in joy, their hands heldhigh to touch the symbolic red applethat sits atop the trophy.

Now that they have earned theApple Cup and their share o thedistrict title, the Sherando Warriorsand their coach Bill Hall are settingtheir sights on a bigger journey, thatbegins at home next week. Te War-riors will play in the comort o theirown stadium, no doubt in ront o aroaring crowd, and they will ace adetermined and talented opponent.Te Louisa High School ootball

team will arrive with their eyes seton the same goal the Warriors pur-sue.

Te Sherando coaching sta ac-knowledged that the game wouldbe a challenge, one o the coachesasserting that Louisa was as good asany team the Warriors had yet aced, including Martinsburg. Te oppo-nent’s team was described as being very athletic and ast, as well as pos-sessing several players up ront onthe oensive and deensive lines thatwere very large and powerul.

Te Warriors at times this sea-son looked as sharp and talentedas they were expected to be beorethe season started. At other times,

namely against Loudoun County and especially against Skyline, they looked much less impressive. Much

o the outcome this week’s com-ing clash will be decided by whichSherando team shows up, and i thesharp and talented one stays or theentire game. Te Warriors have hadtrouble this year at times nishing acomplete game or starting strong.

While they practice harder thanever (their practice Monday was de-scribed by their coaches as exactly the kind o practice that leads to vic-tories in the playos) the Warriorsare still taking time to savor whatthey have already accomplished this year. wo o the goals spoken o dur-ing summer workouts, in the burn-ing dusty heat o August camp, andin the slow attrition o a ten week

season have been achieved. But orthese players, particularly their starseniors, they have only just begun.

Forensic MalarkeBy Edward JohnsonBetter Business Bureau

When you think o the word “o-rensic” the general image most peo-ple conjure up is one o a scientist, criminalist or medical specialist do-ing exhaustingly detailed work. Teuse o word most certainly carriesan ocial and authoritative senseto it. Perhaps that is why the wordhas entered into the consumer mar-ketplace lexicon in ways that are du-bious. Yep, problematic and scamcompanies are now using the word

to describe their purported servicesand some have even used the wordas part o their company name. Forunknowing consumers, there is norest or the weary.

I you are like many consumers youmay have recently received a mass-marketed letter in the mail oering a

Many o thepeople doing the “orensic audits”

have no legal or accounting certi-cation and are simply using sot-ware programs. Te reality is thatthe words are the “terms-dejour”to get your attention. According tothe Better Business Bureau’s (BBB)les, experience, and research many o the companies oering such ser- vices are only providing hope, andalse hope at that.

How it works is that in exchange

Stewart Makes

It a wo-Car

ChaseIt’s seven down, three races to go in

the Chase or the Sprint Cup, and quiteobviously ar rom over, but one mustmarvel at ony Stewart’s versatility.

Stewart has a) won a championshipbeore the Chase ormat existed in2002; b) won a Chase without actually capturing any o the races in it, in 2005;and c) won three races in a Chase hewasn’t actually in, in 2006.

Now, at age 40, burdened by the re-sponsibilities -- like, oh, owning his own

business -- that come with advancing years, he’s turning into the oddest elderstatesman since Willie Nelson.

Not or the same reasons, mind you.Stewart is so close to the point lead,

he can taste it. I it weren’t or what can

only be described, in Carl Edwards’case, as the Luck o the Missourians,Stewart might be in the driver’s seat

right now instead o trying to shoveEdwards out o it.

Te one-time “enant terrible” --that’s French or “terrible child” -- isnow NASCAR’s inormal sergeant atarms. o his credit, he recognizes the

irony.“I’m a car owner now,” he said. “Iremember Joe Gibbs (or whom he

was driving during his championshipseasons) sitting me down and saying,‘Tere are other guys working on thesethings, too. You knock the nose o it a-ter a race because you’re mad at some-body, all o a sudden, you create morework or these guys.

“Maybe the crew guys need to getmad at the drivers when we do some-thing stupid. Maybe the crew guysought to pull the drivers back in theshop and make them x it.”

Maybe, i they’d done that back inthe days o Stewart’s impetuous youth... he’d have had to give up driving be-cause o all the time he spent work-ing on wrecked cars. “I can barely putsomething that bolts together ... to-gether,” he admitted.

Lots o chuckling took place dur-ing the winner’s press conerence atMartinsville Speedway. Te image o Stewart preaching moderation andadvocating good sense just seemed ...hilarious.

“NASCAR has to stay involved,”Stewart said. “You can’t just make it a

ree-or-all.”But, in a way, that’s what Stewart

said he wanted. He doeor-all on the track. Hpreer a ree-or-all in pit road.

“It’s easier or drivback here,” he said. “Tto sort it out amongst e

give them the opportunStewart waxed poe

old days when a Dale -Earnhardt and Jarrett  you out o the car atpractice session, rip yoing to you about it, intiunderstanding why you

“Now,” he said, “thYou let a guy get his buttwice, he’ll quit doing that.”

So ... maybe Stewasuch a preacher o mall. He just yearns or CAR when men were

blackened and knuckle•••

Senior Dogs NeedExtra Attention

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Mygolden retriever, “Jessie,” recentlyturned 9 years old. He’s alwaysbeen an energetic dog, but hedoesn’t seems to like walking asfar as he used to, and when chasingbirds in the park, he only chasesthem a few feet before trotting back to me. He also has some digestiveissues. Is this normal for an olderdog, or should I worry that he’s gotsome hidden health issue? —  Sam

 L., Atlanta

DEAR SAM: Nine years is defi-nitely “senior dog” territory, and it isnormal even for very energetic dogsto begin to noticeably slow down.

Their dietary needs and their diges-tive system also go through gradualchange. If Jessie isn’t showing signsof distress or extreme lethargy, he’s

probably OK. However, as his owner, you know him best, so if his behavior or digestion concern you, take him tothe veterinarian for a checkup.

Senior dogs do have unique needsthat owners should address. HeidiGanahl, owner of Camp Bow Wow,recently listed a few considerationssenior dog owners should take:  —Schedule a veterinary checkup

every six months, rather than once ayear. A senior pet’s health can changerapidly. —Learn the signs of common ail-

ments in senior dogs, like hip and  joint problems, diabetes and eye or ear issues. —Feed your senior dog two smaller

meals per day, rather than one. This

may help with digestive problems.  —Consider adding at least twofresh meals to your dog’s diet per week. The added nutrition can be a

big help. —Replace long runs or walks with

shorter jaunts followed by a dailytraining or toy romp.
