Freaky Fish Invasion Scientists Stalk the Snakehead Fish September 4, 2002- Last week, top scientists rushed to a small pond in Maryland. The pond had '" been invaded by some very strange fish. And the fish were causing major problems! The freaky fish were northern snakeheads from China. Snakehead fish are three feet long and slimy. Their skin is covered with black spots. How did these alien invaders get here? They were brought into the U.S. illegally. Then someone dumped them into the Maryland pond. Snakeheads have big mouths and sharp teeth. They are very powerful predators. So, the other fish didn't have a chance. The snakeheads ate them up. The scientists had another thing to worry about. The Little Patuxent , River is near the pond. Because snakeheads can crawl short distances across land, they might reach the river. They'd kill the fish there, too. To stop the snakeheads, police sprayed poisonous chemicals into the water. As a result, the snakeheads died. Then scientists filled the pond with native fish. The pond is safe-until the next invader arrives. ~ > • ,,' . :
