! " # $ % " & ’ ! The Expanding Horizons Summer Enrichment Program through the Arnold CLC/Lincoln Housing Authority went virtual in July! This summer's program included 13 online clubs that were held July 6-24 with different clubs each week. There were 74 students who participated in the online clubs that included 30-60 minutes of live instruction through Zoom every day. Students could also access a Google Classroom for some of the clubs. Free supply kits for each club were either picked up by parents at the Family Resource Center or delivered to front porches if families could not pick up at the designated time. LHA has provided this summer enrichment opportunity free of charge for over 18 years thanks to partnerships with local funding organizations and other community partners. This summer's program was funded by the Lincoln Community Foundation and the CLC Interlocal Fund. More pictures on page 2. A few of the clubs provided via Zoom (upper left clockwise): Get Wild Club, Mad Scientist Club, Kindergarten Kick-Off Club, Kitchen Science Club, Book Making Club.

Bad Blood by John Carreyrou In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup "unicorn" promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood

tests significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in an early fundraising round that valued the company at $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: the technology didn’t work. For years, Holmes had been misleading investors, FDA officials, and her own employees. When Carreyrou, working at the Wall Street Journal, got a tip from a former Theranos employee and started asking questions, both Carreyrou and the Journal were threatened with lawsuits. Undaunted, the newspaper ran

investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by

Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakeable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures. Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves and of who we really are.

READ IN MOTION Looking for a fun outdoor activity to do with your kids? If you visit the Eiseley Branch Library (15th & Superior), travel down the south sidewalk (along Superior Street) to participate in Read in Motion—a fun story paired with physical activities to get the whole family moving!

Thank you to all of our patrons who have graciously accepted the unexpected changes brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and who have continued to use the library services.

the first of dozens of Theranos articles in late 2015. By early 2017, the company’s value was zero and Holmes faced potential legal action from the government and her investors. Bad Blood is the riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a disturbing cautionary tale set amid the bold promises and gold-rush frenzy of Silicon Valley.

Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano One summer morning, twelve-year-old Edward Adler, his beloved older brother, his parents, and 183 other passengers board a flight in Newark headed for Los Angeles. Halfway across the country, the plane crashes. Edward is the sole survivor.

Edward’s story captures the attention of the nation, but he struggles to find a place in a world without his family. He continues to feel that a part of himself has been left in the sky, forever tied to the plane and all of his fellow passengers. But then he makes an unexpected discovery--one that will lead him to the answers of some of life’s most profound questions: When you’ve lost everything, how do you find the strength to put one foot in front of the other? How do you learn to feel safe again? How do you find meaning in your life? Dear Edward is at once a transcendent coming-of-age story, a multidimensional portrait of an unforgettable cast of characters, and a breathtaking illustration of all the ways a broken heart learns to love again.

Summer greetings from the Parkview Carol Yoakum Child Development

Center. We hope you are all staying cool and having fun! Our staff and kids have been very busy! Preschool has been studying animals and insects and the fun noises they make. We have gone on listening adventures in the surrounding fields to hear what we can hear. We have also been collecting various types of insects to study and document their

habits. We currently have a tiny Praying Mantis we are observing. Our Infants and Toddlers are always busy, working on colors, shapes, the alphabet and sign language. They too go on buggy rides around the neighborhood to

see how many shapes and colors they can identify. Our school age class is currently studying marine life and are making models of their favorite sea creatures. Did you know that dolphins sleep with only ½ their brain functioning

and one eye open to keep safe from predators?

We have a few spots left in our preschool program for the rest of summer and the start of the new school year. We also have some space to expand the toddler family as well.

If you or anyone you know is interested, please give us a call at 402-325-0492.

We’d love to show you around!
