From the Principal
Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College, On Friday 2 August, over 400 former students and staff of St Joachim’s, Xavier College, Our Lady Help of Chris ans, Our Lady of Mercy and Ursula Frayne Catholic College gathered on the Duncan Street campus to celebrate the 120th anniversary of Catholic educa on in the Town of Victoria Park.
Alumni from the 1950’s to 2018 shared stories of the past and rekindled memories prompted by photographs and memorabilia from the founda on schools. Those in a endance had trav-elled from within and beyond the state and overseas to reconnect with former classmates and colleagues.
A par cular highlight of the gathering was the unveiling of a commemora ve art piece created by Linda James, a former St Joachim’s student. As ar st in residence at the College, Linda, in collabora on with staff member Keziah Bin Sali, developed a design for inverted ceramic pots and brought it to life in a temporary studio in the Year 7 Transi on Centre. As such, current students were able to witness the development of this unique piece which will hold a special place in our College and will be u lised during liturgical celebra ons and other special rituals.
Sister Lisa Griffith, RSM (Execu ve Director of Mercy Educa on of the Americas) from Washington DC, included Perth on her Australian i nerary so that she could be part of our celebra on. Sister Lisa’s presence afforded us a tangible reminder that as part of the Mercy family our College is connected to a much bigger story and heritage. During the evening, Sr Lisa presented the College with an exquisite tapestry of the Mercy values.

Our thanks are extended to the chief organisers of this special occasion – Veronica Parker (Vice Principal) and Mary McGonigle (Community and Events Officer) for the many hours of planning and behind the scene prepara ons to ensure that all in a endance had a memorable experience. Thank you also to Joanna Creighton, the Friends of Frayne and the many current staff who contributed to the prepara ons and the conduct of the event.
The success of the evening is captured in the following comment from a former student:
“Just wanted to say how grateful my sister and I were to come back to St Joachim’s (Ursula Frayne) and reminisce. Last night was an amazing night; many wonderful memories kept flooding back as I tried to reconnect with former classrooms, friends and past classmates. It was a fantas c event. The ambience of the evening is one which I will never forget.”
It has been wonderful to witness the growth of our newly formed Alumni as a means of helping them reconnect with their old school and friends. We hope that the Alumni will con nue to grow and become a thriving network for all. All former students and staff members of the founda on schools and Ursula Frayne Catholic College are encouraged to register via the Alumni page on our College website (under ‘Community’) and complete the registra on form or contact Mary McGonigle, Community and Events Officer, on 9470 0925 or [email protected] to have a form posted out to you.
WORKING TOGETHER ‐ HOME‐SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP
In the previous Newsle er I reflected that upon enrolment a partnership was created in which the responsibility of your child’s educa on is shared between you, as the primary educator of your child, and the College community. This partnership between you and the College, especially your child’s teachers, is crucial to ensuring that your child has the best opportuni es to enjoy the school experience and to learn effec vely.
As a parent, you can contribute your own knowledge and skills at all levels, to assist your child’s learning, to support the College’s goals and to promote the principles of Catholic educa on. There are many ways in which parents and schools can work together to improve the educa-onal experience and outcomes for their children. You can help your child in many areas of school life, as suggested in the list below:
Encourage respec ul conversa ons about faith, beliefs and values. Talk to your child about his/her learning and progress. In conversa ons with your child, encourage respec ul listening and sharing of opinions, beliefs and feelings. Establish contact with your child’s teacher to discuss his/her learning and progress, and share knowledge of your child and how s/he
learns. Encourage a balanced diet, regular rou nes, sufficient sleep and regular physical ac vity. Encourage posi ve a tudes, values and behaviours such as courtesy, confidence, persistence and ‘doing your best’. Celebrate your child’s successes. Encourage self-management, independence and resilience. Talk to your child’s teacher about how you can support the school’s focus on
these important life skills. Help your child balance the amount of me spent in school work and play

ST DOMINIC
St Dominic was born in 1170 at Caleruega, a small town in the Province of Burgos, Spain. The son of an honoured and wealthy family, Felix Guzman and Blessed Juana de Aza (she was bea fied in 1828 by Pope Leo XII). Dominic was educated in arts and theology but during a fam-ine he gave away his money and possessions to the poor and joined a Benedic ne Monastery. Pope Innocent III sent him to France to fight against a here cal religious sect, which Dominic said: "that only preachers who displayed real sanc ty, humility and asce cism could win over convinced no-believers". However, there was not an organisa on in the Church to address these spiritual needs, so Dominic founded a new religious order called the Order of Preachers, later called Dominican Order. They possess the dedica on and systema c educa on with more organisa onal flexibility than either monas c orders and secular clergy.
Tradi on says that when things were not going well for Dominic in France in 1208, he went to a chapel to pray; lamen ng and weeping to Mary about the lack of results from his preaching to here cs. It was in the middle of his laments that the Mother of God appeared to him: “Wonder not,” she said, “that un l now you have obtained so li le fruit by your labours: you have spent them on a barren soil, not yet wa-tered with the dew of divine grace. When God willed to renew the face of the Earth, He began by sending down on it the fer lizing rain of the Angelic Saluta on. Preach my Psalter (the Rosary) composed of 150 Angelic Saluta ons and 15 Our Fathers and you will obtain an abundant harvest.” The origin of the Rosary may have come even before St Dominic but the reality is that he spread this Marian Devo on in his preaching and the Rosary has been in the heart of the Dominican Order since its beginning. Pope Pius XI stated; "The Rosary of Mary is the principle and founda on on which the very Order of Saint Dominic rests for making perfect the life of its members and obtaining the salva on of others." For centuries, Dominicans, among them St Thomas Aquinas and St Catherine of Siena, have been instrumental in spreading the power of the Rosary.
St Dominic died on the Feast of the Transfigura on, 6 August 1221 at Bologna, Italy. His feast is celebrated on 8 August, but in Australia because on the day we celebrate St Mary MacKillop, we celebrate his feast on 3 August.
