Arrowtown School Turns 150 – come and join the celebrations this Labour Weekend – Friday 25th and Saturday 26th October 2013
Last year Arrowtown celebrated 150 years since the Gold Rush. This year it is the turn of Arrowtown School which celebrates it’s 150th birthday in October. There are some great community events planned for the Labour Weekend Celebrations.
There will be a Community Gala Day on Saturday 26th October. It will bring together clubs/groups and the wider community to enjoy a large variety of entertainment. There will be wine and food stalls along with traditional reunion photos and reminiscing. The community gala will have a variety of market day stalls and excellent children’s activities. Classes from the school will be having either a stall or activity for the day. Stall sites are still available for anyone wanting to be part of the action.
On Friday 25th October between 11am and 3pm you’ll get the opportunity to see the school in action. Senior students will guide you on a tour of the school so you can see how the school has grown and what the classrooms are like. This is a great chance for anyone from the community who hasn’t previously visited the
shcool to come in and look around. Feel free to pop along, everyone is welcome. That evening is the Mix and Mingle for registered past and present teachers and students. Cost is $15pp including a drink on arrival and nibbles.
Gibbston Wine and Food Festival have supplied a barrel of Special Reserve Pinot Noir for the occasion and this will be bottled with specially designed labels made by the school children. These will be available
for purchase over the weekend.The Saturday night will see local bands entertaining with a small auction of original art works by local artists. Anyone is welcome to attend the evening function and at $45.00pp which includes canapés on arrival and a continuous buffet it will be great value for money. We encourage everyone from the community to grab their tickets early for this special evening. Tickets can be purchased at the School office or email [email protected] for all ticket and event enquiries.
These celebrations are not only for Arrowtown School but also for the surrounding area schools – Gibbston Primary, Macetown, Crown Terrace and Lower Shotover will also be included in the celebrations and in the special booklet being produced. If you have any information, old photos, memorabilia or stories from your days or your parents day at the schools then we would love to hear from you. It is very important that we record as much history as we can, so please get in touch.

travel denmarkDenmark is located on the Jutland Peninsula at the heart of Northern Europe, bordering the North Sea to the west and north, Germany to the south and Sweden across the Baltic Sea via the Øresund Bridge, which connects the capital Copehagen with Sweden’s Malmö to the east. The Danish Archipelago includes the islands of Zealand, Falster and Bornholm among others, as well as the Faroe Islands and Greenland, to complete the Kingdom of Denmark – officially a constitutional monarchy.
Denmark is a maritime country par excellence and the place of origin of the Vikings, those infamously adventurous Norse seafaring warriors who left behind a trail of turbulent political history along with a fascinating cultural heritage. However, according to many a Denmark Travel Guide, these days the country is better known for its affluence as well as the content dispositions of its citizens, who keep topping international happiness polls. Quality of life in Denmark is undeniably high – as are prices – however visitors can expect high standards everywhere, from hotels to restaurants and roadside cafes.
Your Danish holidays is likely to start in the capital Copenhagen, one of the European Union’s busiest hubs, where most flights to Denmark arrive. The city is full of
cobbled streets, meandering canals, vibrant architecture and plentiful sights, including the iconic Little Mermaid statue. Despite its many historic charms, paradoxically most visitors soon leave Copenhagen for Billund and Legoland, Denmark’s primary tourist drawcards. It is indeed incredible to see what one can do with Lego blocks and here you can enjoy a whole theme park dedicated to them!
Most Denmark tours stop at Roskilde on the island of Zealand for a visit to the rather impressive Viking Ship Museum, home to five Viking ships excavated from Roskilde fjord. If castles are more to your liking, there are plenty of those as well. The grand Frederiksborg Castle for example, is likely to exceed all expectations. A formidable fortress built across three islands on the Palace Lake in Hillerød, surrounded by immaculately kept baroque-style gardens, the castle is home to the National History Museum, featuring Denmark’s best painting collection. Outdoor adventure enthusiasts will enjoy exploring some of the Danish Archipelago islands: Bornholm is famous for its rather dramatic cliffs, and Skagen has beautiful sand dunes. Island hopping is great fun and the overwhelming majority of Danes speak fluent English should you get lost.

MARKET REPORT As we wait for the August stats to come through we’ll take a look at sales in July and also analyse where I believe we are in the Property cycle. July property sales activity was the strongest July since 2006 and up 50% on July 2012. A feature of the last month was good demand for property under $500,000 from first home buyers. In many cases this lead to multiple offers on the same property within a short period of marketing. There was also good buyer interest in cheaper managed apartments for use as a winter holiday homes from Australians and northern New Zealand residents. There were 4 sales over $1million but sale prices achieved were approximately 10% down on asking prices. There is still a shortage of listings across most price sectors with good numbers of buyers ready to act. I have been particularly busy in areas such as Arthurs Point, Frankton, Lake Hayes Estate and Kelvin Heights, with sales to local families upgrading their homes, and also out of town buyers moving into the district. I have also had a very busy run in Fernhill with sales to first home buyers and investors. July 2013 recorded 49 dwelling sales which is up 50% on July 2012, and 13 section sales which was much the same as July last year. We always get some winter hibernation and more activity in Spring and we could be in for a very early start to Spring this year! Median sale price of dwellings at $525,000 is up slightly on June 2013 but below the 6 month average reflecting the current demand for lower priced properties. So where are we on the Property Cycle? The graphic below will give a good indication of what is happening, and the shortage of available homes to sell is in line with this trend as we head into well into recovery mode. Expect this clock to ‘speed up’ as it heads towards 12 o’clock and more listings become available over the coming months. One other factor to consider is the announcement of tightened LVR bank policy requiring buyers to have at least 20% deposit. This has been driven by the Auckland and Christchurch markets and in my opinion will do little to help those markets. The basic problem for them is a shortage of homes. In our market it will affect some first home buyers which is a real shame, but with continued population growth I don’t see it affecting us too much. On that note, last week I had the pleasure of finding a home for the Manager of our Countdown supermarket who is relocating with his family to Queenstown. So YES, it is coming soon and their employment process has already begun! 1 packet of spaghetti
1½ cups basil leaves
1 tsp. lemon thyme leaves
1 tbsp. oregano leaves
2 tbsp. olive oil
1 tbsp. lemon juice
2 tbsp. butter spread
½ tsp. salt
¼ tsp. ground black pepper
¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
Zest of 1 lemon
Add in your choice of fish or meat. (cook as desired)
Directions
Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook pasta according to package directions. Blend the herbs, olive oil, and lemon juice in a food processor. When pasta is al dente, drain and toss with herb mixture, butter spread, truffle salt, and black pepper. Garnish with Parmesan cheese and lemon zest.

Place rack in the middle of the oven and preheat the oven to 135°C. Line a large baking sheet with paper. Pour the vanilla and vinegar (if using) into a small cup. Stir the cornstarch into the sugar in a small bowl.
In a large bowl of a heavy-duty mixer, fitted with whisk attachment, whip egg whites, cream of tartar (if using) and salt, starting on low, increasing incrementally to medium speed until soft peaks/trails start to become visible, and the egg white bubbles are very small and uniform, approximately 2 to 3 min.
Increase speed to medium-high, slowly and gradually sprinkling in the sugar-cornstarch mixture. A few minutes after these dry ingredients are added, slowly pour in the vanilla and vinegar (if you didn’t use cream of tartar.) Increase speed a bit and whip until meringue is glossy, and stiff peaks form when the whisk is lifted, 4 to 5 minutes.
Pipe or spoon the meringue into 8-10 large round mounds that are 3 inches wide on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicon liner. With the back of a spoon, create an indentation in the middle of the mound for holding the filling once meringue is baked.
Place baking sheet in the oven. Reduce oven temperature to 120°C. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the meringues are crisp, dry to the touch on the outside, and white -- not tan-colored or cracked.
Cool on a wire rack.

6 egg yolks + 2 whole eggs²/³ cup sugar (use a full cup if you’re using regular lemons, which are tarter)pinch salt²/³ cup lemon juice4 tablespoon unsalted butter¼ cup heavy cream
In a heavy, non-reactive saucepan, whisk the eggs and yolks together. Whisk in the sugar, salt and lemon juice.
Put the pot over medium-low heat and add the butter. Heat, stirring constantly, until the butter is gone and the mixture coats the back of a spoon.
Take the pot off the heat and pour the curd through a mesh strainer to get out any cooked eggy bits that may be lurking. Whisk in the heavy cream.
Pour into storage containers and cool (it will firm up as it cools; in the pic above, it’s still warm). Especially delicious with homemade pavlova.

Try these ideas for fitting more activity into your day.
ExerciseCHOOSE ACTIVITIES YOU LIKE. A lot of different things count as exercise: dancing, walking, gardening, yoga, cycling, playing basketball. To make it easier to get moving, choose whatever gets you moving. Also, choose an activity that fits your self-identity. Do you see yourself wearing attractive clothes and bicycling comfortably to work, or wearing workout gear at the gym?
KEEP IT BRISK. When you walk, make it brisk, since this may help control weight better than walking at a leisurely pace. What is brisk enough? Walk as though you are meeting someone for lunch and you are a little late. You can also time your steps for one minute: 120 to 135 steps per minute corresponds to a walking pace of 3 to 4 miles per hour, a good goal for many people. If your steps are not quite that quick, trying picking up the pace for short bursts during your usual walk, on different days of the week. Over time, you’ll stride your way to a faster walking pace.
REWARD YOURSELF. Set short-term goals—and reward yourself for achieving them. Try targeting a specific event, such as a road race or a walk-for-charity. To participate in—this can help keep you motivated. Choose fitness-focused rewards for reaching your goals, such as new workout gear or a heart rate monitor.
WALK AN EXTRA STOP. During your bus or subway commute, get off a stop or two earlier and walk the rest of the way.
MAKE IT FUN. Try a new sport like tennis or rollerblading. The more that you enjoy exercise, the more likely you are to stick to it.
PIECE YOUR WORKOUT TOGETHER. You don’t need to get all your exercise at one time. Ten minutes morning, noon, and night can give much of the same benefit as 30 minutes all at once.
EXERCISE WITH A FRIEND. Finding a workout partner can help keep you on track and motivate you to get out the door.
WALK OR BIKE FOR ERRANDS AROUND TOWN. Leave the car at home for trips that are less than a mile or two. Cross something off your to-do list while getting in your physical activity.
TURN SIT TIME INTO FIT TIME. When you get busy, try to combine your cardiovascular exercise with a sedentary activity that you do already. Hop on that piece of home equipment while watching TV, reading, or returning phone calls.
SIGN UP FOR A CLASS. Check out the fitness course schedule at your local gym or community center, or the dance or yoga class schedule at a nearby studio. You may find that having the structure of a class helps you learn a new activity and keeps you on track.

It’s like going from rugby training to test rugby, that’s when you find out who gets picked and who get dropped.
So what are we actually talking about?
Be Polite - Be polite to all yours customer, whether over the phone, in your shop or in the field. It’s so easy to do and actually takes no more effort than being rude.
Turn up / deliver on time - This would be Queenstown’s biggest frustration, no one turns up when they say they are going to and you end up having to chase them and hear “I’ll have it ready tomorrow…”.
Quality - deliver the service you are paid to do at a standard you would expect if you were the customer.
Fair Price - deliver the product or service at a fair price, not the cheapest but where the customer gets what they require and you make a reasonable profit.
Employees - treat your employees with respect and pay them well so they can do all of the above and represent your business in its best llight.
Branding - always work on your branding even when you’re busy, it’s how you add value and grow your business.
So there you have it, all you need to do is deliver these things 95 percent of the time and you will succeed.

THE WINNER THIS MONTH IS HAMILL’S RESTAURANT IN REMARKABLES PARK.
I went there on a Wednesday night with my daughter, I didn’t expect it to be busy but it was packed out as it was cheap pizza night. From the moment I waked in all the staff were friendly, they took the extra time to talk to my daughter and check up on us often despite being so busy. Our food came out promptly (the waiter joked “that’s because everyone is waiting on Pizza” while I had ordered the chicken bacon burger!), and it was a great feed. We paid the friendly bar staff our reasonable bill and left happy - 10/10 Hamills restaurant and crew. It’s that simple. They have no idea who I am but I have been ‘selling’ Hammils for years - I take friends and family there knowing what I can expect and have yet to be disappointed. I’m a silent sales rep - all I require is friendly service and good food at a fair price - and how many customers like me do they have out there? Hundreds all silently returning and recommending their restaurant, and that’s my point do the basics well and the customers will sell your products for you, it really is that simple.
Now the opposite of this is…
When I was recommended that at my age and waistline it may be time to go to the gym, especially as I’m off to Hawaii for a winter escape and not wanting to look like a white whale in the pool it sounded like a great idea. I was recommended a new gym in town - it all sounded great, so as soon as I got the chance I gave them a call.
I was greeted by a clearly uninterested team member who told me they were very busy and suggested I text him some times I was available and he would look into it. I told him I didn’t know when or what classes they offered and so the best he could offer was to text me. He never even took my name and I never heard from him again, 0/10 for this new business . Failed on all counts, and now you have an anti sales rep out there in Queenstown doing the opposite to Hamills above, telling people my story and why they shouldn’t go there. An unhappy customer (or not even a customer as I wasn’t given the chance to become one) is a cancer. They infect everyone they share their bad experience with and the only cure is to not create them in the first place.
Over the years I’ve been involved with thousands of Queenstown businesses, I’ve seen so many come and so many go and the difference is always the same: the ones who delivery the basics when they are busy are the ones that survive and thrive, the ones that don’t are gone… and that’s my blunt simple point.

Overcoming their initial reserve, the friends drop their dressing gowns, their modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements. Puzzling their husbands, mortifying their children and riding the wrath of the outraged WI, they spark a global phenomenon. But as media interest snowballs, the Calendar Girls find themselves exposed in ways they’d never expected, revealing more than they’d ever planned. When people think of whitewater rafting in the Southern Alps a few things come to mind: ice cold water, thrills and spills and some stinky borrowed wetsuit. The word luxury rarely enters the equation, let alone the whiff of decadence. The team at Queenstown Rafting is aiming to change your mind on just what a high-end rafting trip is all about.
The three day trip down the Landsborough River started early in Queenstown. Our first port of call was to the head shed to collect our equipment and meet the team. After a quick introduction we grabbed our refreshingly not-so-smelly wetsuits and the remainder of our gear and loaded up the van for the drive to the West Coast.
Over the Crown Range and the Gates of Haast westward we go. At a non-descript pull-out the van pulls over. As our driver and raft guide, Michel an affable French-Canadian, starts to explain what is going to happen a distant thumping is heard. As if right on cue the chopper buzzes the roof and lands in the paddock beside the road.
Like I said, this is luxury rafting. Loading our gear into the machine we climb aboard as the pilot revs the engine and the magic carpet lifts off the ground. Soaring effortlessly we glide above the forest heading up-river. The carpet of green is only broken by the blue ribbon of water that bisects the landscape. On the horizon the hulking statuesque silhouette of the Southern Alps stand guard like a fortress wall.
We touch down in a tiny clearing beside the river. Over the low frequency din of the rotor blades we unload the helicopter and in an instant we are left alone in the silence. I grab my gear and walk a few
steps into a fully set up camp. An elaborate cooking area complete with table, chairs and fire pit. Just beyond is a tiny village of tents dotted amongst the trees.
I find my tent - this isn’t some backyard pup-tent - tall enough to stand in and complete with camp cots, this is posh digs for the backcountry. Returning to the kitchen area I find that our guides have laid out a cheese platter and are pouring me a
nice glass of Central Otago Pinot Noir. I wonder to myself if this new standard of luxury wilderness adventure will spoil me forever. Will I ever be able to go back to scroggin and Milo?
Before dinner I take a stroll amongst the forest. The
sound of birdsong echoes all around as the sun begins to head towards the horizon. Upon my return dinner is on the go - and what a meal it is. A stir-fry befitting an up-market bistro is finished off with a chocolate pudding that you wish your mamma used to make.
The next morning I wake up early and promptly stay in bed for an hour - it’s one of those sort of trips. Eventually the smell of breakfast urges me out of my palatial tent. After breakfast it’s time to actually do some rafting on this rafting trip.
We load up and hit the river. It’s a stunning day, warm and sunny - so not the West Coast. The river twists and turns through the landscape, bumpy second class rapids are broken up with larger sections of whitewater. As we head down river the intensity of the rapids builds.
We pull off to the side of the river to scout a rapid called ‘Squeeze’. At a house sized rock the river takes a sharp right then a left. We would have to be precise, committed and ready to negotiate it. We paddle for all we’re worth and ride the liquid locomotive. The rollercoaster of whitewater throws the raft at its whim. In a flash it’s over and we’re out the other side, laughing, elated, high-fiving and ready to take on the world.
The rest of the day is predicated with fun rapids, lazy floats and stunning views. We pull out late in the afternoon to another prepared camp. Before long the Pinot emerges and the smell of a roast lamb fills the air. As I drift off to sleep I wonder what the next day of rafting is going to entail. I wonder what’s for breakfast and what jaw dropping views I’ll see. I wonder if I could get used to being this spoiled. I think I could.

While the car show would be held on the reserve next to the school grounds, the school would host a day of activities including food stalls, cooking demonstrations from Wai and Rata chefs, a plant sale of seedlings prepared by Year 7 and 8 Horticulture students and kids activities including PlayBall and pampering for parents from Eforea Spa.
There would also be the opportunity for individuals to hire stalls at a small cost and sell products or second hand goods suitable for primary school children and their families.
Among the dozens of prizes given out at the Car-nival would be two laps of the Highlands Motorsport Park in a Porsche.
Money raised on the day would assist with the school’s ongoing playground development for use by the pupils and the wider community.
“We’re planning a great day out for all the family and want the whole community to be a part of it,” Mrs Pederson said.
Remarkables Primary School and Queenstown Car Club are thrilled to announce a new family event to add to the must-do Queenstown social calendar – the Remarkables CAR-NIVAL.
The idea was inspired by local Dad and car club member Karl Argyle and the October event features Queenstown’s only major car show this year and a family oriented carnival day out.
With the enthusiastic car club behind him Argyle approached the school about holding the show at its fabulous lakeside location.
Remarkables Primary School RPA chairwoman Tracey Pederson said members jumped on the idea.
