“Tom Hawkins”
I first saw Geelong’s Tom Hawkins (Tomahawk) in what was his debut game. This was round 2 of the 2007 season and it was against my team, Carlton. They thrashed us that night, however it was worth it just to witness this amazing introduction.
He kicked 3 goals but his impact was even greater. He stands 198 cm tall (6’6”). Geelong has been impressive in their handling of Hawkins. He was used sparingly throughout 2007 and 2008 whilst his body hardened. Since then he has played most games except for the occasional suspension and injuries. He played a dominant role in their 2009 and 2011 Premiership victories. It’s true to say I’m a big fan, having seen that first game I’m always delighted to see him play yet again.
I believe the best is yet to come.
This month I would like to invite members to provide feedback
to either me ([email protected]) or the commit-tee more generally. ([email protected]) on some of the activities we have been organizing lately.
Firstly, I have recently been pro-moting that Bob Date, Bob Hayter and Darryl Oats have been arranging a printing service for members. The trial night has now been and gone, and it appears to me to have been very successful. 18 prints were made on the night, and members that used the service seem to be very pleased with it. I would like know from members at large, though, how you view this service.
Is it something that you think you will use in the future? Is it good for
members, in your opinion, an appro-priate service for us to offer?
Likewise, Bob Hayter and Mel Kuhn have done a load of work organizing our presence at the Frankston Music Festival. Is this the sort of activity that the club should be seeking out for the members? I know that gig photography isn’t everyone’s area of interest, but I’m talking about this kind of activity generally in the future.
Finally, this month will see us re-introduce image appraisal nights, whereby members can bring in images to be critiqued by the more experienced and successful mem-bers of the club. The intent of this is to help improve everyone’s level of skill in a supportive and friendly environment. (Personally, I hope it will give some of us enough

confidence to enter the monthly competitions.) Is this the sort of activity that you would like to see us engaging in?
I really hope that you can take a few minutes to drop us an email about your views on these activities, and hopefully to suggest new things that we should be trialling too, or ways that we can improve the current offerings.
In closing, I would like to again remind everyone that the VAPS CONVENTION AND INTER-CLUB EXHIBITION is on MAY 27 - 28 at the Frankston Campus of Monash University. You can reg-ister through our web site, and I urge you to do so. If you can’t make it, at least buy some raffle tickets for the FPC fund raiser. When you see the great prizes we have secured for the raffle you’ll definitely want to. More
on that in the weekly emails as we get closer.
Cheers,

Daytime Group
In April the day group met at Frankston Library and reviewed a sample of images taken on our last day
shoot at Werribee Free Range Zoo. Everyone got a few photos that would stand ups well in future monthly competitions. After reviewing the images Bob Date gave an excellent presentation on travel photography. Bob took us through the complete process of how the maximise the quality of our images taken when travelling - what equipment he uses, researching and planning where to go and when, and the base settings he uses. He emphasised the value of getting out at dawn -great light and less people. this is of value for all of our photography.
This month, on the 17th of May we are due to go down to Cape Schanck to capture some seascapes. For those who have not been down there before there are a lot of steps down to the rocks (and it seems like more to get back up). Low tide when we are there is at 9:36 AM so for those interested we should be able
to clamour over the rocks to get some better shots of Pulpit Rock (access is somewhat difficult). Tripods are very useful in conjunction with ND filters at this location if you have them. Adjacent to the car park the lighthouse precinct is open from 10:00 AM as is the museum and if interested lighthouse tours are available for $16:00.If time permits we could drive around to The Blowhole at Flinders before finding a lunch spot (suggestion welcome). We will meet at the front of the Brotherhood of St Lawrence at 9:00 AM and car pool down and pick up anyone from Mornington in the Bunnings Car Park at about 9:15 AM if they contact me.
All members are welcome to the Day group and We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.
