• FDR was elected president for the 1st time in 1932—eventually elected to 4 terms!

• Slogan of election “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people"

• Famous radio speeches known as the “fireside chats”

The New Deal

• Name given for series of programs aimed at helping America recover from the depression

• In first hundred days, pushed numerous programs through Congress:

• Closed banks for at least 4 days until they could prove they were healthy

• Created gov’t agencies to provide work to the unemployed

Court Packing

• Many New Deal laws were struck down by the Supreme Court

• FDR tried to add members to the Court through the Judiciary Reorganization Bill of 1937

• often called the Court-packing plan

• plan did not pass in Congress

about the government or plight of the people. Some Possibilities include: Coolidge, Hoover, FDR, Bonus Army, New Deal, Hoovervilles, Hoover Blankets, PWA, etc.

– OR Rise of Hitler. Focus on the Treaty of Versailles, appeasement, etc

– OR Pearl Harbor. • Project is worth 10 points and is due next class

period. Must include: Label for cartoon and be colored!
