Tell the Board of Commissioners to Support LGBTRights in Frankfort With a Fairness Ordinance

    The Issue

No discrimination protection exists at the state or federal levels for lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) people. These individuals can still be legally fired froma job, denied an apartment, or kicked out of a restaurant or park. The Frankfort Board

of Commissioners is drafting an ordinance that would offer this protectionlocally. But a couple of the votes needed to pass it are still on the fence. We CAN makethis happen in Frankfort but we need you to voice your support.

A Fairness law protects ALL residents from discrimination. It would prohibitdiscrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations based uponsomeone's actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age (over 40),disability, familial status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

It is unthinkable to most of us, but right now LGBT people are the only one of these

groups denied protection. It is perfectly legal for a landlord to post a flyer saying, Housefor rent no gays allowed.

    Background

To date, only the Kentucky cities of Covington, Lexington, Louisville, and Vicco haveenacted local fairness ordinances barring that type of discrimination. A recent pollshows us 83% of registered Kentucky voters agree that gay and transgender peopleshould be protected from discrimination in the workplace, in housing, and in restaurantsor other forms of public accommodations. In 2012 the Human Rights Campaignreleased a scorecard of U.S. cities based on how inclusive the cities ordinances are to

LGBT people. Frankfort was one of only three cities, out of 137, to receive a score

of zero. We can do better!

    How To Act

For every phone call a lawmaker receives, it is assumed ten more people feel the sameway. YOUR CALLS AND LETTERS MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.Leave a message for the following City Commissioners. It can be as simple as Hello,my name is ________ and Im asking you to support a Fairness ordinance in Frankfort.
