www.francisgre-h.schools.nsw.gov.au FROM THE PRINCIPAL As we approach the middle of term 1 I would like to share what has been happening at Francis Greenway to date for 2019. Our 2018 HSC graduates are about to begin their university courses. They are undertaking studies in Psychological Science, Exercise and Sport Science, Bachelor Education, Primary and STEM, Bachelor Science, Bachelor Forensics, Bachelor Creative Industries, Bachelor Business and Bachelor Medical Radiography. Once again, congratulations to all of them. Our Welcome Assembly was well attended by family and friends. It was wonderful to have such a happy and positive start to the school year where we inducted our school leaders, our Junior AECG, our Student Voice Team and our Sporting House Captains. Our students have strong leadership qualities and are proud to be part of these leadership groups. We also acknowledged our 2018 Dux, Regan Young who achieved an ATAR of 92.8 and treated us one last time to her beautiful singing voice. Congratulations and thank you Regan. The Swimming Carnival was a lot of fun and, as well as students competing in readiness for Zone, allowed all staff and students an opportunity to get to know each other. The Athletics carnival is another such opportunity where parents are also welcome to come along and enjoy the day. Year 7 are an amazing group of young people who have settled well into high school. They are engaging in their learning and taking opportunities presented to them assuring them a successful and happy high school experience. They completed Best Start in week 2. This is a literacy and numeracy assessment that we can use to identify specific strategies to support their progress. Senior students have undertaken Elevate workshops to provide a toolbox of strategies aimed at making their HSC a work smarter, not harder experience. Thank you to those parents who came along to the workshop. Being able to understand and support your child’s HSC journey reduces the stress and anxiety for all involved. Mrs Kennedy and Mr Wheeldon are both in the HSC Hub to specifically work with students in completing assessment and tutoring. At the end of 2018 we invested $200000 in upgrading technology. This included thirteen Promethean Active Panels and 140 laptops. In 2019 enormous fans will be installed in the hall to provide a more comfortable learning and assembly environment as well as additional covered seating for students in the playground, upgraded classrooms that reflect future focussed learning and additional technology installed. At Francis Greenway, we are committed to providing high quality learning environments and resources to compliment the high quality teaching that occurs in our classrooms. FROM THE DEPUTIES

Years 7 and 9 It has been a pleasure to welcome new and returning students to our school after a well-earned break. Students are settling in very well and making great progress towards their learning goals. Many students have met with me to express their desire to improve and work towards their personal best. I am very pleased with how Year 7 have made the adjustment to the secondary school learning environment. Feedback from Year 7 teachers has been extremely positive. I am equally as pleased with the more mature approach Year 9 students are demonstrating towards their studies in 2019. For Year 9, this year begins their first year of Stage 5, with the biggest change being the studying of two elective courses. These courses are studied for 2 years and contribute towards a student’s Record of School Achievement. Students have been permitted to change their electives in the first few weeks to ensure they are in a course they most desire. The electives on offer this year include Child Studies, Commerce, Drama, Food Technology, Graphics Technology Computer Design, Industrial Technology Timber, Photographic and Digital Media, Physical Activity and Sports Studies, Visual Arts. Year 7 students have certainly demonstrated their enthusiasm for learning. A significant change from our previous cohorts is the BYOD program. At Francis Greenway High School, we value the learning experiences and opportunities that technology can provide our students. The promotion of all forms of learning are core to our educational philosophy. In 2019, it is an expectation that all Year 7 (and 11) students bring their own computing device (BYOD) for learning to school every day. These devices will provide students with opportunities to engage in contemporary learning activities and connections to the world beyond the classroom. In addition to learning experiences at school, by having their own device always, students are empowered to manage how, when and where their learning occurs. Students have already commenced working in their online and digital classrooms where teachers share and collaborate notes, activities and coursework with students through various share platforms. The school strongly encourages parents/carers to be actively involved in their child’s learning and I’m sure a family discussion around how they are using their devices in class will be very informative for all involved. I look forward to continuing to assist students in their growth as learnings and productive community members and am sure 2019 will be another successful year for students at Francis Greenway High School. Ben Higginbottom Deputy Principal Years 7 & 9

Years 11 and 12 Year 12 The final stage of their 13-year school journey has begun and the HSC exams will be here in approximately 35 weeks. Now is the time for students to work hard, be consistent and continue to revise and use the resources provided to them here at school. Students have flexible timetables, however, the HSC Hub is available to them when they have a study and Ms Willa Kennedy is there to provide them with assistance and guidance with their tasks. Students were all equipped with a 2019 planner/diary to support their planning of homework, Assessment Tasks and setting daily priorities. There is an expectation that the planner will be with them every day. Elevate will present two seminars this year to Year 12. Ace Your Exams which was already completed on February 4.

This seminar covered

Highest value exam preparation tasks

Fixing mistakes to ensure constant improvement

Time allocation during exam preparation

Techniques for managing stress and time pressures in exams In Term 3, they will return to present Finishing Line. This seminar will cover

Overcoming weaknesses in the lead up to exams

The role of Exam Study Groups

Stress Management Techniques and wellbeing

Study routines for swotvac and holidays

A reminder that the Deputy Principal can revoke flexible timetables at any time as stated on the permission note sent home and signed by parents and students. The expectation is that students attend every lesson that is a scheduled face to face with their teacher, especially the days where students may have only one timetabled lesson. These days may provide temptation to stay at home; however, this will impact negatively on their attendance and successfully achieving the HSC. I will be watching student attendance carefully and meeting with students having whole days off unexplained. Year 11 Students have been equipped the opportunity to have a flexible timetable on Mondays. Students may leave after their period 4 class. If students wish to stay at school and use the learning centre to complete tasks they may do so. All Year 11 have been equipped with a 2019 Planner/Diary. The expectation is that this diary will be at school every day and will be checked by teachers. Sessions on Thursday will provide students with the tools to use the diary effectively. Last week year 11 began their Thursday mentor program ‘Reaching Your Potential’, this program aims to maximise the students’ performance in the Higher School Certificate. In the ‘Reaching Your Potential’ Program, every student is assigned a teacher to be his or her mentor. The mentors provide their students with advice on the productive use of their time, so that they can be well prepared for assessment tasks, exams and other assigned activities along with non-required work. There are sessions on using the Planner, studying, getting ready for exams, reflecting on exam performance, applying for university, accessing NESA information, answering extended response questions, stress management and possible lectures from ex-students about their experiences. The mentor sessions are scheduled for 45 min every Thursday period 3 and 4. Elevate provided a valuable 60 min session on Time Management for Year 11 on February 4. The seminar covered

Developing routines to balance study and lifestyle

Working smart by completing high value work

Utilizing study groups to leverage time

Techniques for overcoming procrastination Students are still settling into their pattern of study and making some minor changes, these changes will not be made without parental permission via a note. The cut off for changes will be the end of week 4, any later would cause undue stress on students to be able to catch up on 4 weeks worth of work. Please feel free to contact me if you need any further information. Amanda Usher Deputy Principal

Years 8 and 10

Students have had a great start to the year. Year 8 have given up their training wheels and have begun their studies with a new invigoration and

positive attitude. Students are studying their first elective course which hopefully they will enjoy and may lead them to further study in Stage 5

courses.

Year 10 are in their final year of the junior school. This year will be a time where they need to consolidate their learning and consider what their

pathway might be moving forward into Year 11 in 2020. A consistent effort to maintain a good attitude, complete all work, participate in lessons and

develop the necessary skills in preparation for the senior school will be a priority throughout this year.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

All students have had a series of lessons during the past week around school-wide expectations. Lessons included:

Classroom expectations, entering and leaving school, bikes, skateboards and scooters at school, mobile phone policy, being positive and productive

restorative practice, working in specialised rooms, active and passive areas, lining up, using breaks appropriately and out of class need a pass.

Page 4: FRANCIS GREENWAY HIGH SCHOOL Newsletter · 2019-10-12 · Ace Your Exams which was already completed on February 4. This seminar covered Highest value exam preparation tasks Fixing

www.francisgre-h.schools.nsw.gov.au

The following are examples of signage in classrooms to remind students of expectations.

PBL is a consistent approach to developing positive behaviour patterns across the school. Students are explicitly taught

the expectations that are developed by staff and students. All expectations relate back to our core values of:

RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY, COMMITMENT AND COOPERATION.

Damien Brownsmith Deputy Principal

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Welcome to Francis Greenway High School. The Mathematics and LOTE staff are looking forward to working with your child to improve their understanding and confidence in Mathematics and Japanese. As usual, we will be using the school intranet facility (Moodle) to supply information to students/parents about coursework, homework, assessments and important NESA requirements. To help your child succeed in Mathematics, it is important that they bring all their equipment, including a workbook/device and calculator, to every lesson and complete the classwork to the best of their ability. Learning their multiplication facts and being organised are important skills that will lead to success. Please note, having an ‘all-in-one’ book is not satisfactory. Students are expected to bring their own scientific calculator (Casio or Sharp) every day as the Numeracy strand is covered in all subject areas of high school.

Assessments: All students in Years 7 -10 will complete an ‘end of term’ test as part of their Mathematics assessment this year. Students will

be able to access revision papers (via FGHS Moodle site) to practise and revise for these tasks. Any Year 9 or Year 10 student who does not complete an assessment task on the due date will need to complete a misadventure form and provide a Doctor’s Certificate (as per school policy). Failure to do so will result in zero marks for that task and an N-Award notification being sent home.

Differentiated Learning Environment: Mathematics aims to be relevant and applicable to the 21st century. The inclusion of the

proficiencies of understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning in the curriculum is to ensure that student learning and student independence are at the centre of the curriculum. These proficiencies enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematical strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently.

HSC Minimum Standards: The HSC minimum literacy and numeracy standard is part of the Stronger HSC

reforms. From 2020 students need to demonstrate a minimum standard to be eligible for the HSC. Students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate they meet the standard between Year 9 and the time they complete their HSC.

The NSW Education Standards Authority has detailed information on their NESA website.

Learning Centre: Our school Learning Centre is located in the Library after school on a Monday and

Wednesday afternoon 3 – 4.30pm. All students are encouraged to use this facility to complete classwork, finish homework and assignments. There will be staff who have volunteered their time after school to help students with any

questions.

Careers and VET Updates Year 10 will have the opportunity to participate in Work Experience this year. Year 10 will be given their work experience paperwork in class before the end of term 1. If a student is absent for this lesson, they must see me in the Careers Office in the Library. This paperwork must be explained to students in detail, and cannot be given to another student on their behalf. I will be accepting completed paperwork from week 1 term 2. Work Experience will be week 6 (3/6 -7/6) of Term 2. There will be 2 White Card Training courses (WHS Induction for the Building Industry) held at school on Tuesday March 26 (week 9) and Tuesday April 9 (week 11)Term 1. Students must first present a blue permission note to me to be included in this course. The cost is $99 to be paid before the course at Student Services. This course is mandatory for students undertaking work experience of any kind on a building site. This year due to new government requirements, each student must obtain a USI (Unique Student Identifier) number before the course, by going on the website www.usi.gov.au This can be completed at home or at school with me before the day of the course, and students must have photo proof of identity, such as their student ID card on the day of the course. Year 11 students who did not provide their USI to me at the end of last year, please do so as soon as possible. Forms are available, with instructions, from the Careers Office in the Library. Please also note that although Year 10, 11 and 12 students may be eligible for a RoSA certificate, this will not be issued until the student leaves school permanently and the school needs to be notified of this, so that we can apply for the RoSA Certificate. However, while students are at school, they can access the NESA website and make an account with students online. From there, all their records are accessible and can be printed. Students receive emails about this through their school email account and Student Portal. They should be checking them regularly as they may miss out on important information.

Language Other Than English (LOTE)

JAPANESE (日本語)

Konnichi wa! In 2019, all Year 7 students are completing their 100 hours of mandatory LOTE study in Japanese. The Japanese Syllabus provides opportunities for students to engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of the Japanese-speaking community. Through learning Japanese, students develop communicative skills in the language, an understanding of how languages work as a system and intercultural understanding capability. (NESA Japanese Syllabus)

Most Year 7 students have started the year enthusiastically and are confidently using their newly acquired language skills in the classroom and also if we pass in the playground. I hope they are greeting each other every day with a friendly “ohayoo! (Morning)”

The theme for Term 1 Japanese Studies is “All About Me”. Students will develop skills and learn language to exchange information about themselves, family and friends. The photos below show Year 7 students learning the Japanese characters for the numbers one to ten. Students have been creatively developing their own mnemonics for these characters.

Below are three students from the Year 11 Beginners Japanese class. This two year ATAR course is designed for new learners of Japanese. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Japanese so they can exchange information about their family and friends, their daily life and future aspirations. They also learn language in the context of shopping, eating out and travelling in Japan.

We are lucky to have a Japanese Cultural Garden on site. This garden was designed and built by FGHS students and staff and was officially opened in November 2016. When temperatures cool, Year 7 students will be practising their speaking and listening skills in this beautiful outdoor learning space.

Japanese Club meets each Wednesday at lunch time in E12. Students can enjoy playing games in Japanese, watching anime, drawing manga and listening to Japanese popular music (JPop). All students from Years 7-12 are welcome.

Sharon Waller Japanese Teacher

Volunteering is activity you do of your own free will to meet genuine needs. Although you often learn new skills and knowledge, you receive no payment or advantage for your efforts. Volunteering involves giving your own time to help others.

Many students see volunteering as 'doing good stuff', putting a smile on other people's faces and generally helping out. At FGHS we have a lot of students currently involved in volunteering activities. They are Surf Life Savers, SES Volunteers and wildlife rescue organisation volunteers. Some students regularly perform duties at their local sporting clubs, visit aged care facilities or provide assistance to people with disabilities.

Students who volunteer may be suitable for inclusion in the NSW Premier's Student Volunteering Awards program. Attainment of these awards enhance a student’s resume and formally recognise the service they are providing to the school and community. If your child is involved in any of the above activities or another activity which you think might qualify as volunteering, please encourage them to speak to Mrs Waller at school about registering their volunteer hours.

Alternatively, if you would like to speak with me, please call during school hours on 4964 1282.

Disability Provisions Students with a diagnosed medical condition and/or learning difficulty that impacts their ability to perform in examinations and/or assessment tasks may be eligible for disability provisions. Disability provisions provide students with practical support in examinations. Students’ special needs may include vision, hearing, learning and medical difficulties. To qualify for this provision a student must provide recent (last 12 months) medical reports from sources such as General Practitioners, Specialists, Occupational Therapists or Psychologists. To qualify for learning difficulties students must be identified by a Head Teacher or support staff member, undergo assessment with the school Learning and Support Teachers and have a reading age 5 years less than their chronological age. If you believe your child may be eligible please contact Jill Steuart for more information. Seasons for Growth Change and loss are issues that affect us all at some time in our lives. When change occurs in our families through death, separation, divorce or other related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. At Francis Greenway High School we offer a pastoral care program called Seasons for Growth. This program is facilitated in small groups and focuses on skills to cope effectively with change and loss, self-esteem, managing feelings, problem solving, effective communication and support networks. If you think your child would benefit from this program we would encourage you to talk it through with them. Please contact Margaret Sims for more information.

A few important reminders from the Wellbeing Team to start 2019: We have two amazing LASTs (Learning and Support Teachers) at Francis Greenway High School and it is important that their role at our

school is clarified. LASTs are qualified teachers who specialise in providing support for students in regular classes who experience

difficulties in basic areas of learning and behaviour. Their role is to improve outcomes for students with additional learning and support

needs as well as extend our top students as they strive for academic excellence. They may provide additional support in literacy,

numeracy, language and behaviour. Students do not need a formal diagnosis to access support.

Whilst our LASTs are willing to work with any student who fits the above profile it is important to remember that they are not personal

tutors and parents wishing for their child to receive extra support for particular subjects should make contact with local tutoring agencies.

Active Kids Rebate In 2018 over half a million children engaged in a more active lifestyle, with the help of the Active Kids program. From 1 January 2019, parents and carers of school-aged children enrolled in an approved sport or fitness activity can receive a $100 voucher to cover registration and participation costs for that calendar year. Parents will be able to apply for and download their vouchers from the Service NSW website. Each child is eligible to receive one voucher every year until the end of 2021. SCIENCE Welcome back to all our returning Science students and farewell to 2018’s Year 12’s. The end of the summer holidays signals the new arrival of the fresh faced Year 7 cohort for 2019. For new students, it can be daunting using unfamiliar equipment like Bunsen burners and test tubes. Though we hope there is some excitement there too! As by now you will have had a few weeks to adjust to the new lifestyle of High School, we would like to reinforce some important things to remember in Science:

Always wear enclosed shoes, tie hair back and wear safety glasses. Safety is very important to us in Science and we don’t want you

hurting yourself. These rules help keep you safe.

Books and pens are very important, even if you BYOD. Make sure you are prepared for work whenever you enter a classroom. It is your

responsibility. We will be having a 3 strike policy – Parents will be informed on the third strike.

All classes 7-10 should be nearing the first round of assessments. Please check with your children that they have received and are

completing any assessment tasks they may have.

That’s all that we have for you in Science. We hope you have a wonderful year!

CANTEEN NEWS Welcome back everyone. We are excited to be back and trying some new recipes. Unfortunately we have lost some of our volunteers this year so we are in need of some new people. We provide morning tea and lunch, and try to make the day enjoyable for everyone. Even if you only have a couple of hours to give in the morning, this would be very helpful as the prep for our fresh food is done then. Volunteers are not required to serve the students. Thanks as always to our regular volunteers who have returned for another year. Your help and commitment is invaluable. Please phone the school and ask to speak to Lisa or Darlene in the Canteen. Thank you. Lisa Rowley and Darlene Ruming Canteen Supervisors
