Journal: You and a friend decide to take a break from studying for

your health test. You and your friend walk down the hall to the stairs. You skip down the stairs, while your friend decides to slide down the banister. You reach the bottom of the stairs and are turning to go into the kitchen when you hear a loud thump and your friend cry out in pain. You turn to see your friend sitting down in the middle of the floor, holding his/her arm. But his/her arm isn’t straight like it should be.

A fracture is a break in a bone.

-An open fracture is a complete break with one or both sides of the bone piercing the skin.

-A closed fracture does not break the skin and may be difficult to identify. Typical signs of a closed fracture include pain, swelling, and misshapen appearance.

You run back into the entryway to find your friend lying unconscious at the bottom of the stairs. One of his/her arms is bent at an odd angle and there is a large cut on his/her lower left leg that is bleeding.
