Lesson on Fractions
When Do We Use Fractions?
• We can use it when we eat pizza!
• When we are looking at a number of something out of a whole.
• What are some examples?...
What does a Fraction Look Like?
• Which one is the fraction??
• There are several names for a number, just as there are several names for a person… Example: Rebecca can also be called Becky.
• We can refer to ½ as 2/4. These are called EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS.
Where is the Numerator and the Denominator?
• What do you think? Using the fraction ½…
• Is the number 1 in the fraction the numerator or the denominator??
• Is the number 2 in the fraction the numerator or the denominator??
Top or Bottom?
• The numerator is the number on top of the fraction.
• Numerator has a “u” in it and so does “up.”
• Denominator begins with “D” and so does “down.”
• The 1 in the fraction ½ is the NUMERATOR.
• The 2 in the fraction ½ is the DENOMINATOR.
As a Fraction, How Do We Write the Shaded Parts?
• The NUMERATOR is the number that tells what part of a whole is shaded in.
• The DENOMINATOR is the number that tells the total of equal parts.
• For example, in one triangle, 1/3 of the triangle is shaded pink.
