Fractional/decimal equivalentsThere are several uses for equivalents for
fractions in our shop. We need to know that ½ is .500To use taps and diesTo use construction toolsTo use in metals projects during construction
Decimal Values
.500 .5= tenths .50= first 0 represents hundredths .500= second zero represents thousanths
FractionsThe fractions we will deal with are as follows:
1/8, ¼, 3/8, ½, 5/8, ¾, 7/8, 1
1/8= =.125
3/8=
.375
Division The decimal equivalent is found in 1/8 by dividing 8 into 1
or divide 8 by one either way is correct. Your answer is ?Now take calculator and divide 1 by 8.What is your answer? Call on student.
Now how would we find the equivalent of ¼
Now let’s try doing the hand out and finish answers to the third place from decimal point.
Hand out sheet
Trade of Thought1/8= .125
If you add two 1/8 you get .125 +.125 = .250 = 1/4 How do I know this is correct.Divide 1 by 4 on your calculator=.250
Because if you add two eighths which is .125 +.125 = .250 or 1/4
If you add two ¼ together you get .250 + .250 = .500 or 1/2
Conclusion of HandoutHow do we find fraction equivalents?
Divide the top number by the bottom number with a calculator if you need to complete answer.
Now let’s use this in construction. The dowel is half of the thickness of the piece
of wood used.We need to put a dowel joint on a table and
legs. How do we determine the size of the dowel.
Dowel JointThe piece being used is ¾” thick the dowel
needs to be half of this dimension.
We need to use a .375 dowel or 3/8”.
Give dowel joint demonstration.Show what dowel jig looks like and how it is
centered.Show dowel center.Drill both holes according to width of boards.
