  • Dear Friends, The place of Mary in the daily lives of Catholics has declined, sad to say, in the last 30 years or so. That is unfortunate, a loss to us and to the Church as a whole. But this trend has begun to turn itself

around. There has been a gradual resurgence of interest in Mary, not only among Catholics, but also among Christians of other faiths as well. Devotion to Mary is becoming stronger than ever. Why? Because what many thought was a deemphasis on Mary in Vatican Council II was really a repositioning of Mary back to the center where she belongs. She does not belong off to the side by herself, not matter how high our pedestal is. She is one of us, among those who Christ died for. She is a member of the Church, not above or apart from it. She is a disciple of the Lord, the first and best disciple, but one who struggled to understand her Son, just like all of us do. She is also a mem-ber of the Communion of Saints, helping to bring us to the Lord, not someone who stands between us and the Lord. Father Tony Vallecillo will be taking Father Erick’s place as of July 1st. Father To-ny was ordained in 2014 and is now presently working at St. Peter’s Parish in San Francisco. Father Tony will be dividing his time between the OLL and St. Isabel-la’s Communities. I welcome Father Tony to the OLL Community and I thank Father Erick for his 1 ½ years of service. We will be celebrating Father Tony’s ar-rival and thanking Fr. Erick for his time with us. Watch for dates and times.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Frequent fliers today have many ways to ac-crue air miles, so one doesn’t always have to en-dure long hours in cramped seats to earn free hours in cramped seats. In St. Paul’s day, there were no such perks, nor would there have been any legal system for him to protest the ship-wrecks he endured. He had other rewards in mind. The churches that he established in the catalogue of cities from today’s first reading must have been very different from one another. Language, culture, customs, religious history, obstacles to community, social challenges, the places where they met, their clothing, their bread and wine, all distinct, particular to the area. There were social customs as well: in a Christian household, the only place where a slave would be able to stand legally as an equal with the master would be at the table of the Lord, because at that table a new world of reconcilia-tion was imaged. While Paul revered local cus-toms, he was relentless about challenging the ways that people lived their Christian lives and how their worship reflected them. It is much the same today, as a global Catholic Church seeks to respect local customs and culture, allowing for differences in many things, yet always giving expression to the underlying presence of Christ, who binds us all together into his body.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
