Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Lent. In the Gospel of John today we hear one of the most recited or known passage of Scripture. “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him may not die but may have eternal life. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him”. These two lines are the center of our faith. Jesus Christ is God’s son and he was willing to give him up so we can live life abundantly. The First Reading reminded the Israelites of all the ways that God was working to help them. He sent prophets and signs to let them know the path. They didn’t always listen. Jesus is the ultimate and final messenger. Are we listening? This week the Renew My Church decisions for our parishes was announced. St. Agnes, St. Kieran and St. Paul will become one new parish on July 1, 2021. new parish. Under the direction of Mr. Lungaro our principal, the school is strong and doing very well. We look forward to the school continuing to be an important piece of the evangelization plan of the new parish. Rome asks that one church be considered the “mother” church of the parish. St. Kieran will be designated as that church. It will be where parish records will be kept. So this is the plan for our little piece of the pie. The next question is who will be the next pastor for the new parish? I am pleased to announce that Fr. Gary Graf will be the new pastor. Fr. Graf is an excellent choice. He was ordained in 1984 and has served many large and diverse parishes in the Archdiocese. I think most importantly for us, Fr. Gary spent 14 years in Waukegan where he pastored seven churches that became one. Most recently he has been pastor of the parish of San Jose Luis Sanchez Del Rio parish in Chicago. and has been the part time Fire Chaplain for the City of Chicago. This parish also was a Renew My Church combination. So Fr. Gary has the skills needed to shepherd the new parish. Most importantly Fr. Graff is fluent in both English and Spanish. So as we heard in the readings this weekend, God continues to bless us and send us good pastors to lead us. I know Fr. O’Mara, Fr. Tom, Fr. Erasto, and Fr. Gil at St. Paul look forward to working with Fr. Graf. So what happens to me? I’ve told some people they send old pastors out to the farm where we get to graze in beautiful green pastures for the rest of our lives. Well that isn’t the truth. First I want to say how grateful I am for all the years we have been able to spend together. Twenty five years! It has been a great run. In all three parishes, St. Agnes, St. Paul, and St. Kieran, I was blessed with pastoral staffs, and parishioners who worked hard to make sure Jesus was known. We had fun and we held each other up in difficult times. The stories of our lives together are the ones I share with the new pastor. I never felt alone. The support of all of you always made my life, my priesthood, a joy. Thank you.

Sick or Homebound?

‘John 3:16…Have you been saved?’ Catholics are often intimi-dated by a statement like this. We can’t quote the Bible by chapter and verse, and we who have been born and raised as Catholics haven’t really spent much time thinking about our salvation since we went to school, if even then. Today’s Gospel gives us that famous verse not to make us feel guilty or to

make us suffer, but as a gift of time when we join with other Catholics throughout the world just to consider what it is ex-actly that we believe - what is this faith of ours that leads to our salvation. “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son...” It all starts with God and God’s love freely given to us through Je-sus. We have done nothing to deserve this love, it’s just the way that God is for us. Being ‘saved’ is no more complicated than believing that we are loved by our God. Like the chosen people of Bible times, we who are often wayward and longing for home, are to believe that everything is in God’s hands and that God will lead us safely home in the end. We are ‘enlightened’ by this belief - yet there are some who prefer darkness to light and would rather believe in their ugli-ness and unloveability than be lifted us by the awareness of God’s love freely given to them. John calls them ‘condemned’, not because God is unloving, but because we sometimes don’t let ourselves be loved. In just a few weeks, we will enter into our Holy Week and hear the story told once again about the suffering and dying of Jesus. This is not to paint a portrait of God as one demanding pain for pain’s sake, but rather as a proof that even dying does not mean that God does not love. Love is stronger than death; the darkness of Good Friday is conquered by the light and joy of Easter Sunday. This is our faith. A faith that is our salvation. But our belief must be demonstrated in action by letting this truth of being loved live in the light of who we are and how we live and how we bring love to others. We are a Resurrection people, not just one day of the year but throughout our entire lives lived with that awareness of God’s love. Live your sal-vation and be hope for others. Fr. Tom K

Year of St. Joseph~~~December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021 Feast of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Virgin Mary ~~March 19

In his Apostolic Letter, “With a Father’s Heart,” Pope Francis dedicated this year to St. Joseph, spouse of the Virgin Mary and foster-father of Jesus. Why? “So that every member of the faithful, following his example, may strength-en their life of faith daily in the complete fulfillment of God’s will.” The Gospel of St. Matthew calls Joseph a just man. Pope Francis explains: Joseph “unconditionally accepted Mary,” who was pregnant by the Holy Spirit, and Joseph was “the man in whom Jesus saw the tender love of God.” Pope Benedict XVI wrote that “it is no exaggeration to think that it was precisely from Joseph that Jesus learned, at

the human level, the justice which he was one day to teach his disciples.”

The Litany of St. Joseph calls on Joseph in prayer as being: Chaste and just. Husband of the Mother of God. Foster-father of the Son of God.

Head of the Holy Family. Pillar of family life. Example to parents. Model of workers. Comfort of the troubled. Hope of the sick. Patron of the dying.

Protector of the Church. Saint Joseph, pray for us.

D.G. for the Liturgy Team

Lenten Regulations Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on all Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions.

Remote Mass-Worship Aid

Please see the website saintagnes.us to find a worship aid for remote Mass attendance. The worship aid will contain the words for the Apostle’s Creed, the Nicene Creed and,

when available, the words and music for the songs. The wor-ship aid for the Sunday Mass will be available from Saturday

morning until Sunday night. Worship aids for special/holiday Masses will be available the day

before the day of the Mass.

SATURDAY, MARCH 20 1:30-3:30 PM

?Stone or Bread? “Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks

for a loaf of bread?” (Mt. 7:9) Of course we would not offer stone. And because we are fed

spiritually in the Eucharist with the bread of life, we are called to reach out to our hungry neighbors with bread

for their physical lives.

So then, in the spirit of charity : When? Saturday. March 20— 1:30 to 3:30 pm What? Drive-thru food collection to benefit the pantry at Re-spond Now Where? Parking lot entrance to St. Agnes Church and School How? Volunteers will come to your car to collect your dona-tions of non-perishable food. We should all observe masking and distancing. You do not need to enter the building. Why? For many reasons, we have always had hungry neigh-bors in our surrounding communities. Loss of health, jobs, and income during the pandemic has added to the number of those struggling to put food on their tables.

COVID-19 means hunger. Please note: If you are registered to attend the March 20 and 21 weekend masses, you may bring your food donations when you arrive for mass. Finally: This is the only time and way we will be accepting donations of food during Lent.

Your generosity will be a blessing to our hungry neighbors.
