Dear Friends, For we who live after the Resurrection and Ascension, the most direct way to experience the Risen Christ is in the Eucharist, in the gathering together with fellow Christians, in the word we hear at Mass, and in the sharing in his Body and Blood. By “direct”, I mean that it is in the experience of the Eucharist that we can see, hear, and touch the Risen Christ and be seen, heard, and touched by him. A recent study of young Catholics, ages 15-25, found that a significant number of them don’t identify with this experience of Mass. While there are different findings in this study, one stood out to me: for many, their faith is nurtured elsewhere than in Catholicism. Before I or any of us become critical of them, we might reflect on our own need for renewal. That can begin with what we hear from Christ in today’s Mass. Peter says to the Roman leader, Cornelius, who seeks baptism, “I can see that God shows no partiality. All are acceptable to him.” John wrote years later, everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Jesus stresses in the gospel, “You are my friends if you...love one another." Something happens at every Mass that shows us what Christ means by his use of the word “love.” We all know that it’s easy to love in the abstract. It gets a lot tougher when love means not people in general, but a particular other, someone perhaps we don’t like, don’t agree with, someone we’re suspicious of because he or she is not like us. When Christ talks about “love”, he means something closer to the particular challenge than to the abstract meaning. In the consecration of Mass. he says: “Take this. This is my body...Take this. This is the cup of my blood.” I emphasized the “this” in these sentences to highlight the particularity of what we’re experiencing. Christ doesn’t say “Any bread...any cup of wine.” He says this bread, this cup of wine. It’s not just that Christ is everywhere so he’s also here at Mass. Of course that is true. But that can be vague and hard to pin down. He wants to be far more direct. He wants to be in our faces in the Eucharist, giving himself fully not just to everyone, but to each one, to each special person who comes before him in Communion. What’s more is that our faces can become his face. If that is our direct experience of Christ at Mass, then when we’re there or when we leave, we are challenged to be him to anyone we meet that day, that week. It doesn’t matter what the status of the person - male, female, black, brown, yellow, white, gay, straight, immigrant, migrant, religious, non-religious, political, non- political, old, young, born, unborn. It can’t matter to Christ. It shouldn’t matter to us. We a re all first and foremost, human beings. Peter discovered a new depth to his Friend’s command, “love one another;" a new depth to his fellow disciple’s insight, “everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.” Peter realized that “ God shows no partiality.” If we are to be renewed, let’s pray for his desire to be in each other’s faces through his face and act on it...people are attracted more by deeds than words. Transcript of Fr. Joe · Schepps John Falcone. Eucharist Adoration † Pray for the happy repose of † Bunny...

Dear Friends,

For we who live after the Resurrection and Ascension, the most direct way to experience the Risen Christ is in the Eucharist, in the gathering together with fellow Christians, in the word we hear at Mass, and in the sharing in his Body and Blood.

All are acceptable to him.” John wrote years later, “everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Jesus stresses in the gospel, “You are my friends if you...love one another."

Something happens at every Mass that shows us what Christ means by his use of the word “love.” We all know that it’s easy to love in the abstract.

It doesn’t matter what the status of the person - male, female, black, brown, yellow, white, gay, straight, immigrant, migrant, religious, non-religious, political, non-political, old, young, born, unborn. It can’t matter to Christ. It shouldn’t matter to us. We are all first and foremost, human beings.

Peter discovered a new depth to his Friend’s command, “love one another;" a new depth to his fellow disciple’s insight, “everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.” Peter realized that “God shows no partiality.” If we are to be renewed, let’s pray for his desire to be in each other’s faces through his face and act on it...people are attracted more by deeds than words. Love,

Fr. Joe

REFLECTION

A WEDDING GIFT St Francis of Assisi

I hear you singing, dear, inviting me to your limb.

I am coming, for all that we do is a preparation for

love.

I hear you singing, my Lord, inviting me to your throne. We are coming, dear, for all the toil you have

blessed us with is a preparation to know and hold the

sacred.

I hear you singing, my soul, but how can it be that God’s voice has now become

my own?

“That is just a wedding gift for our Divine Union,” my Beloved

said.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

6th Sunday of Easter “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:12)

Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? Jesus says that if we love Him we would be willing to offer whatever we have to Him, not because we want praise and glory, but simply because we love Him. Does your giving seem mechanical out of obligation or do you share freely out of love?

PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY…

What are the needs of the faith community here at St. Anne’s? A Parish Social Ministry

can determine what the particular needs are of the people of St. Anne’s and can provide

assistance to those with basic needs. It might be meals when one has been ill or visits to

the homebound or phone calls to check on those who live alone. The Pastoral Council is

looking for volunteers to organize a Parish Social Ministry who will assess the areas

where our fellow parishioner have a need and determine the best way to be of assistance.

A Parish Social Ministry, according to the National Conference of Catholic Charities, is

“the empowerment of the parish as the people of God to fulfill the Church’s mission of

love, justice, freedom and peace by the community responding in an organized way to

societal and individual human needs.” Are you called to be a part of this new ministry?

If so, please contact Joan Piela at [email protected]

Community… Formed by the Word and by the Eucharist, St. Anne’s builds

community in the ways that we live and work and celebrate

together. In these ways, we experience the living presence of

Christ. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact

any of the following Pastoral Council Representatives:
