Dear Friends, My friend, Fr. Matt Conva has a niece, Cynthia, who married into a wealthy family. Her husband, Richard and his 10 brothers and sisters, have set up a school in Tanzania. They fund it and at various times of the year different family members visit the school to see how the students are doing. Cynthia and Richard have invited two of the female students to their home near Denver each summer and the girls have become part of their family. As I listened to Matt tell me different stories about this part of his family, I couldn’t help but think of the gift that these folks are to the students in that area of Tanzania. But, the children they are helping have also given to these Americans a gift, the gift of the opportunity to open their hearts to help those that need an education. This to me is what Christ has revealed about human life: God encounters us in and through the human situations we share with each other. As the Communion ritual at Mass reminds us, it’s in that human encounter between two people that Christ offers himself. This is a revelation of what is true in every encounter we have. He gives himself so that we can be a gift to one another. This isn’t just true in the kind of goodness my friend’s family experiences. It’s true in every exchange of goodness in any of our lives. It’s simply the gospel: God isn’t distant. He’s in the midst of life. Every exchange we have with another is a gift in which Christ seeks to open our hearts in goodness to each other. Our lives are filled with such gifts. St. Paul once said it well: “All is grace.” We have gotten so used to thinking that we have to be in control of the situations in which we live that we miss what’s staring at us face to face. These situations aren’t for us to get what we want. They’re God-given opportunities for us to give and to receive in ways that help us to be there for one another. It’s in recognizing the reciprocal nature of any encounter that we can see how concretely God encounters us. And it’s in recognizing this that we can begin to see how the love of God fills our lives before we even have a chance to ask for it. It’s this prayerful awareness that must happen if we are to deepen our experience of being Christian. This is how genuine stewardship begins. It doesn’t start with us asking ourselves “what can I do?” It begins with reflecting on what God has done for us. That awareness begins when we realize that we’d be nowhere without the people in our lives. That recognition that brings us to our knees before the face of God in true gratitude because their gift is his gift. So let’s take the next few weeks to do this together. Let’s prayerfully ask the Lord to help us become more aware of how his daily presence, through our encounters with each other, brings us the opportunities for mercy, healing, care, joy, forgiveness, and challenge. Let’s allow that realization to deepen so that genuine gratitude becomes the hallmark of our lives. Love, Fr. Joe

REFLECTION Why So Many Souls

-Meister Eckhart

When were you last really happy? Let that experience ferment,

bring it to mind once in a while.

Surely in the genesis of that past moment, when you danced,

you would not have wanted a constable to have knocked

on your door,

or have said, “You just entered a restricted ground.”

Why are there so many stars and souls, with no end in sight for

them?

Because nothing can interrupt God when He is having

fun, creating!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS The Transfiguration of the Lord “And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as

light.” (Matthew 17:2)

Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect Christ’s light to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, the body and blood of Jesus, we are called to be supernatural to reflect His love, mercy and forgiveness to others. When we are grateful for all that God has given us, generosity flows through us because we are made in God’s image.

A Word from Pope Francis: Christ’s followers are not individuals

caught up in a privatized spirituality, but persons

in community, devoting themselves to others.

They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Unable to get near Jesus

because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through,

IDENTIFYING the WOUND: CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Catholic Relief Services, which serves children with HIV in Nairobi, Kenya, realized that a number of

children with special needs were being overlooked. They did not socialize with other children; their personal

and physical development was hampered, and health services were limited. Often, their births were not

registered.

BINDING the WOUND: http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/crs-and-special-olympics-team-up-to-help-kenyas-forgotten-children-89616/ In 2013 CRS found out that Special Olympics had begun to work in the same part of the city and identified a number of

children in the same age group that they were serving. Special Olympics runs activities which help the children build

their motor skills and follow directions, then they play with other children from the neighborhood who do not have

disabilities. A physical therapy session was recently added because many children and their caregivers could not access

physical therapy within their neighborhoods. Parents receive positive parenting education, which helps coach parents

on how to relate to their special needs child, and support the child’s growth and development. In addition, community

health workers and social workers also provide home visits to reinforce education on positive parenting, nutrition, and

hygiene. The social worker checks on the family’s wellbeing and helps with tasks such as acquiring a birth certificate.

CRS project manager Bill Ouko said the community has responded positively to the centers, which have increased

participation and support for children with intellectual disabilities. “Children who were previously locked away, end up

opening up and learning to socialize and play with others.”

Ouko stressed the importance education has in making a difference for children with intellectual disabilities: “The

community needs it in order to stop the stigma and act as a support structure.”
