October 20, 2019 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A Message from the Pastor

Our parish is assisted at weekend Mass by the Salesian priests from Don Bosco High School in Ramsey. From time to time, we share with you some spiritual reflections by one of their members, Father Steve Ryan.

What Are We Supposed to Think About When Praying

the Rosary

By Fr. Steve Ryan, SDB The month of October is two-thirds over. Did you get a chance to pray the rosary during this month? Remember Pope Francis challenged Catholics to pray it every day in October.

In order to be sincere and habitual in praying the rosary, there are a couple of things to aid us in praying it. Things that might help us to really enjoy doing the rosary every day.

1. It’s not hard. The rosary is a simple prayer. It con-sists of five sections called mysteries. In each mystery you pray one ‘Our Father’, a decade of ‘Hail Mary’s’ and you finish up with a ‘Glory Be’. Don’t get excited or worried if you skip a bead here or there. 2. Mary prays with us. We are in her company when we pray the rosary. No, I’m not crazy! We are giving her honor and asking her to bring our requests to her Son, Jesus. So she actually prays along with us. Isn’t that cool to know? 3. Your mind is allowed to wander. You can think of various people and various situations and concerns as you pray the decades of the rosary. Certainly, the mysteries that go with each decade are good to ponder. Keep them in mind as you go from one Hail Mary to another. These THEMES and MOMENTS in the story of our salvation enable us to focus on God’s love for us in Christ. And they remind us of Mother Mary’s help for us, too. However, please do not feel that you have to be so absolutely focused on the mysteries that you don’t pray about your real-life situation(s). 4. Grab one of the themes from each mystery and apply it to your life. Ask yourself: What is this mystery of our salvation (that I’m reflecting on) have to say to my life right now? Keep it real! Keep it simple, too.

Let’s apply that last point (number 4) to the Glorious Myster-ies of the rosary. These are the mysteries that we usually pray on Wednesdays and Sundays. They are:

I. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ II. The Ascension of Jesus to Heaven III. The Descent of the Holy Spirit IV. The Assumption of Mary into Heaven V. The Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth

In the first Glorious mystery, The Resurrection, think to your-self as you pray: “Troubles will pass; new life is coming.” Stay hopeful. Don’t get down. Let yourself feel hope. Say the ten Hail Mary’s with an abiding sense of HOPE as your backdrop.

In the second mystery, The Ascension, think to yourself:

FR. CHARLIE’S FAREWELL

All are invited to Fr. Charlie’s farewell Mass and reception on next Sunday, October 27th beginning with the 11:30am Mass. If you haven’t RSVP’d for the recep-tion please do so by Tuesday, October 22nd to Lori at [email protected] or 201-327-4359 x 202.

WEEKLY STEWARSHIP REFLECTION

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 20, 2019

“…proclaim the word, be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient...” 2 T 4:2

It is not always convenient to be a good steward, espe-cially when all the temptations of our busy and material-istic world get in the way. Now add our own pride and ego into the equation and living a stewardship lifestyle may be downright uncomfortable! Remember, God did-n’t call us to be comfortable. He called us to be faithful.

“Heaven is coming one day – that’s my ultimate goal – so stop getting bent out of shape about things.” Your backdrop is: This life is temporary – HEAVEN is eternal.

In the third mystery, Pentecost, think: “Empower me Lord God – give me the gifts I need.” This is intercessory – COME HOLY SPIRIT! It’s also a mystery in which we ought to be filling up with a confidence that can dispel the dark night of fear.

In #4, The Assumption, think to yourself: “If I do the right thing and become holy – I will GLORIFY God and receive honor like Mary.” This mystery’s backdrop is: God is watch-ing. God sees everything and knows everything.

In the last Glorious mystery, The Crowning of Mary as Queen, think: “Mary, HELP! You have the ability to get all my prayers answered by your Son. You are the queen of heaven and earth. Thanks for having my back.”

Here is my final hint on praying the rosary. Take one reflec-tion for each decade and pray about it – with your heart, not your head! Make sure you are connecting to your real-life situation. As we go on saying the Our Fathers and Hail Mary’s in a rosary, it’s better to connect the mystery to your ‘gut’ rather than to some imaginative depiction in Galilee, Jerusalem or Nazareth.

Just some thoughts.

BRINGING UP THE GIFTS AT MASS

Did you know that the bread and wine at Mass are meant to be the gifts of the people to be offered to God for consecration? We would love to have more parishioners take part in this part of the liturgy, by bringing for-ward the bread, wine (and collection basket) during the offertory procession. Simply volunteer by approaching our teen sacristan (at the bulletin table) when you arrive for Mass. Then, when the collection starts, go the gift table by the church inner doors. The sacristan will hand you the items when it is time and you walk up the aisle to the priest. Also, our lectors may invite you to bring up the gifts – please say yes! Father Charlie

PRAY ALWAYS? HOW? Today we have two examples that can help us reflect on what it means to “pray always.” The first is Moses, holding his arms up so that the Israelites will have the better of the battle. This is a common pos-ture for prayer in the ancient world, and the Bible is full of references to one’s lifting up hands (and arms) in pray-er. The second example is from the parable Jesus uses to demonstrate the principle of praying always: the widow who persistently pestered a judge from whom she de-manded justice. Moses’s prayer is a continuous move-ment extended over a period of time; the widow’s peti-tion is repeated at frequent intervals over time. The Church’s rich tradition of prayer sets before us examples of both kinds of prayer.

What Makes You Feel “ALIVE?”

There are perhaps as many answers as there are individuals reading this message. The autumn leaves with their beautiful array of distinctive colors foster an atmosphere which animates and enlivens us to enjoy the boundless delights of the fall sea-son. Many people will not experience such delights due to im-poverished conditions. Catholic Charities on a daily basis as-sists the underprivileged in society. Please help by contributing the following to the donation bin located at the entrance to the small parking lot: used clothing, small appliances, shoes, linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals, novels, and children’s books. Thank you.

Please be aware of some important items regarding everyone’s safety at Guardian Angel

• You may have noticed that recently much of the curbing in front of the church was repainted, as it had started to fade. As a reminder, yellow curbing indicates that parking is not per-mitted. Yellow-curbed areas must remain free for emergency vehicles, so cars cannot be left unattended in those areas. (You may pick up or drop someone off there.) I realize that out of habit, convenience, or haste sometimes people have parked there, but please do not do so. We have ample park-ing in our church parking lots.

• Recently we installed illuminated EXIT signs and emergency lighting over the exits in our church building. All of the church doors can always be exited from the inside. We ask that if because of urgency someone must leave by one of the side doors, it then be firmly closed. The only church doors unlocked for entrance are the six main front doors. This is for everyone’s security. These actions are taken not because of any specific threat, but in keeping with safety measures be-ing adopted by houses of worship across our nation.

• At the suggestion of state and local law enforcement, we would like to create a parish registry of those with medical training who could be called upon to assist in an emergency. If this is you, please let me know.
