B o g d a n s C o r n e r It is the last weekend of January 2019 and we have hospitality after the Sunday Masses. I am very thankful to Suzanne & Carol for handling this for St. Faustina Parish. Hospitality is not only to provide food and drink but also to open the doors of our hearts to welcome strangers. As registered and practicing members of our parish, we feel comfortable with each other, but we must open our hearts to those who are not yet involved in the life of the parish, those who are distant or shy. I would like to quote Archbishop Vigneron and his thoughts in the Pastoral Letter – Unleash the Gospel. “…we must ensure that our communities extend a warm welcome to everyone who walks through the door.Do not think of the parish as “…the place for those who belong but more as the place for those who do not belong but are taking their first steps on the journey toward God…” If a homeless person shows up at the parish, let us rejoice! If a teenager covered in tattoos and piercings walks in, let us be glad? Let us make our parishes places where everyone who attends Mass can also make friends, find mentors, and feel known, loved and supported.Unleash the Gospel, Archbishop Vigneron. There are all kinds of doors. Doors of wood that lock out and need knocking on to gain entrance; ears can be doors when we refuse to listen to another person, to hear their story; our bodies can be doors. This week we will have First Friday to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus with devotions. Also, we will observe First Saturday and it is the Presentation of the Lord. There will be blessings of the candles. Next Sunday we will have a Blessing of the Throats after the 8:30 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. Masses in memory of St. Blaise. Christmas decorations have pleased many people. I appreciate the positive comments and thanks to my staff for decorating. Many thanks to Donna, who also celebrated her birthday last week. From all of us, I wish you a Happy Birthday! G o d B l e s s , F r . B o g d a n

Fr. Bogdan’s Corner

It is the last weekend of January 2019 and we have hospitality after the Sunday Masses. “…we must ensure that our communities extend a warm welcome to everyone who walks through the door.” Do not think of the parish as “…the place for those who belong …but more as the place for those who do not belong but are taking their first steps on the journey toward God…” “If a homeless person shows up at the parish, let us rejoice! If a teenager covered in tattoos and piercings walks in, let us be glad? Let us make our parishes places where everyone who attends Mass can also make friends, find mentors, and feel known, loved and supported.” Unleash the Gospel, Archbishop Vigneron. There are all kinds of doors. Doors of wood that lock out and need knocking on to gain entrance; ears can be doors when we refuse to listen to another person, to hear their story; our bodies can be doors… .

God Bless,

Thank you for your donations to St. Vincent de Paul. On our last food pantry day, January 8, we were able to help 54 families, totaling 149 people. We are in desperate need for peanut butter, jam, cereal, toilet tissue, laundry detergent, and paper towels. If anyone in our parish needs assistance, such as food or help with utilities, please call our office and speak to a Vincentian. Please know that all conversations will be kept in strict confidence. Our phone number is 586-773-9231. “Good works are links that form a chain of love.” … St. Teresa of Calcutta

Music Ministry

It’s not too late to get involved with Music Ministry at St. Faustina! Here is a look at when the choirs rehearse. Please come to our next rehearsal. If you are interested, or have questions, please call Matthew Zinser, our Music Director, at 646-369-8619, or send an email to [email protected]. ADULT CHOUR: Rehearsals on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the parish office conference room. YOUTH CHOIR: Rehearsals on Mondays from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. in the parish office conference room. HANDBELL CHOIR: Rehearsals on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the church.

Men’s Bible Study

The Men’s Bible Study will begin on Sunday, January 27th at 12:30 p.m. in the main office conference room. If you haven’t signed up, it’s not too late. Just come!

The Gift of Time

Too many of our older and disable neighbors are lonely and isolated. They long for just a brief visit now and then from someone who will take the time to sit and chat. And other families in our community are struggling to take care of a loved one at home. These full-time caregivers need a break. If you have a few hours, once or twice a month, to visit or just sit with an older or disabled adult, your gift of time will make a huge difference. No hands-on care or nursing experience is needed. For more information, call the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers at (586) 757-5551.

Gospel Reflection (Adapted from Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families by Kerstin Keber Smith)

Hearing the Word: Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had grown up, and went according to His custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: /The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,/ because he has anointed me/ to bring glad tidings to the poor./ He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives/ and recovery of sight to the blind,/ to let the oppressed go free,/ and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord./ Rolling up the scroll, He handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” Reflecting on the Word: After proclaiming the passage from Isaiah, Jesus announces that He is the one the prophet had foretold. Can you imagine the response of the people? Do you think that they had a hard time believing the Messiah was in their midst? Have there been times that it’s hard to believe that God is in your midst? God is fulfilling a promise through each of our lives. What promise are you waiting to have fulfilled? What would you do if it came to be? God Bless,
